How often do you game your starting lineup? (1 Viewer)

Anyone make decisions based on your opponent's lineup?

I rarely do it, but there are times it makes sense, IMO

The 'Cliche' thread got me thinking about the "always start whoever you believe will score the most points" axiom.

Remember, in H2H, the idea is to simply score more than your opponent that particular week

Maybe in two situations.

1. One league has two copies of each player. If I'm playing against a weaker opponent who is starting a player I have, I'll consider starting him over someone I might have otherwise. Mostly this is corner backs and safeties as a pick 6 can turn a matchup but also sometimes if we have a player like TY Hilton who can explode for a big play or 2 but might otherwise be too risky to start.

2. Possibly if he has two wr or the te/wr from a team and I have the qb.  If he has Crabtree and Cooper, while I have Carr, I might start Carr over a guy I usually like slightly more.

But really not too often.

In some situations, I definitely do. I know amassing the most points is obvious and necessary as a potential tie breaker for playoff rankings but I will at times look at opponents lineup and make an educated guess wether I'm the favorite or dog. This will influence high floor vs. high ceiling decisions for me.

The only thing I'll do is sit my defense if I'm up by a small margin before a monday night matchup in case of negative points.

The only time I come close to doing this is over bye weeks. If I think my line-up is "good enough", I won't make short term decisions seeking more points.

I did that once back in 2009. Sat my defense, who wound up scoring big anyway. I won the game, but it effected my league standings as the playoffs were starting the following week. Based on the points that I scored, I was placed in what appeared to be the more desirable bracket, with the easiest road to a championship. I got bounced in the first round, but wound up scoring the most points every week thereafter. And, had I been in the other bracket, I would have won the championship easily.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, always shoot for scoring as many points as you can every week, and let the chips fall where they may.

Only time would be a circumstance where it's a Sunday or Monday night game and almost all the players have played so I know where I stand. Maybe I'm down big and need a big game from my last WR but my opponent has the WR's QB. That's about the only scenario.

This as well as I’ll consider a “safer” play versus a player with more variance. For example I’ll roll thielen instead of Hilton in a league where I’m a big favorite.
