How short is the leash for Mike Vick this year? (1 Viewer)

The problem is ppl outside of atlanta look at vick's passing stats and schaub's passing stats and wonder why schaub doesn't start. The bottom line is wins not who can pass for more yardage or put up better ff numbers and as others have pointed out schaub doesn't win. Furthermore if you look at vick's stats last season he went 1 - 2 in games in which he threw over 200 yards including a week 11 match up vs the bucs in which he threw 306 yards and two TDs by far his best passing performance.

I read somewhere that part of Mike's problem last season was trying to prove that he could be a pocket passer to everyone. That experiment is over now and they're designing more plays that will give him the option to run or pass. If the receivers stay with him and get open while he's moving around, I think that will help his passing numbers a great deal.

I agree the problem was trying to prove that mike is a pocket passer but I wouldn't call the experiment over. The REAL problem wasn't that the coaches wanted him to stay in the pocket it was the fact that everyone in the media and elsewhere started saying it and mike let it get to him. You could see there were times when he should have taken off and run and instead he stood there trying to make a throw that just wasn't there. He's looked a lot more comfortable in the preseason so hopefully he's cleared that psychological hurdle

I agree. It was more a problem in Mike's head where he felt he needed to prove to everyone (especially the media) he could do it. As far as the experiment being over, I think he will get back to what comes naturally to him and hopefully that will include throwing on the run and hitting open receivers. :football:

http://pro-football-reference.com/players/SchaMa00.htm Career 49.3% completion percentage. Stats aren't really impressive, the only thing impressive about Schaub was he had one good game against a banged up Patriots team (no Seymour, Willie Mcginnest, Tedy Bruschi, Rodney Harrison, Patriots were using 3rd stringers in the defensive backfield, etc.)

Matt Schaub is the new Billy Volek.
I bet the Falcons get a higher draft pick for Schaub next year, than the Titans get for Volek this year.
True, but not a higher draft pick than the Titans COULD HAVE gotten for Volek if they didn't play it like complete morons.
That's the difference between Rich McKay & Floyd Reese. One has a clue & the other doesn't.

For those of you pumping Vick up for his starting record of 22-11 think about this. He has started 33 of a possible 48 games. For a 130 mil you would expect him to be on the field more than that. 22 wins over 3 years is only 7 wins per season. He doesn't have to be Favre but he needs to be on the field more to live up to his salary. On the field he doesn't merit his salary, off the field he sells tickets so I'm sure the Falcons can live with his injuries. But if he were a CEO of a large company and was paid 130 mil and then took 4 months a year off would you consider him as earning his money. I wouldn't.

7 wins a year? So it's his fault Rob Johnson lead the team to a 2-11 record? Then Vick came back and went 3-1 (single handedly beating the panthers who went onto the SB). Earning his money? The Falcons were one of the worth franchises in the league. Vick makes the falcons 5x the money he gets paid. Merchandise. TICKET SALES. They added seats to the Dome. Sell outs? The Falcons never used to sell out. Value of the franchise? Vick alone probably adds 250 million of value to the franchise. The Falcons are basically on the map because of Vick. I don't want to hear about how Vick hasn't earned his money. He's earned his money without question. I remember when he came back on the road against the Texans. The texan fans gave him an OVATION. A visiting QB returning from injury, and they clapped? *lol* Vick moves product, puts people in the seats, at home AND on the road. As for on the field.Got them to NFC semi finals, and NFC championship game. End of story. They were 6-2 last year, and then the falcons D ate it. 26th ranked rush. Gado came in and runs for 3 tds. Stecker/Smith looked like Icky Woods and James Brooks. Vick got a late 4th qrter TD to give them the lead against the Bucs, then Caddy runs it 10 straight times and they give up the TD. So please don't talk about money/business when it comes to Vick. You look silly. On the business side, Vick is without equal. Call it hype, call it ESPN playing highlights, call it whatever you want. But Blank is raking it in because of it.

I'm a big Atlanta homer and huuuuge Vick fan, but I can understand/accept the criticism tossed his way. What really gets me is when ppl seriously throw Schaub's name out there like he's a Brady-in-waiting; he's maybe half a percent more accurate than MV and can't make the same things happen w/his legs. He could certainly start for some teams, but he doesn't deserve to start over Vick.

That's not a leash around his neck, it's a lanyard. And attached to it is the key to the city. Maybe that's an exaggeration, but no more ridiculous than the assertion that Vick is on a "short leash."
