How to calculate salary based keeper systems? (1 Viewer)

One of the biggest struggles I have every year is figuring out the values of my guys in my keeper system. There are tools out there for picking keepers based on just future performance and tools even to calculate for when keeping players cost you their corresponding draft pick.

But I have never found a good way to figure out keeper values when there is a salary cap type system in place. My specific league isn't EXACTLY a salary cap league, but it's close in that each player has a value based on how many years he has been on a roster since being drafted with a cap on total value that you can keep each year.

Anyone have a similar league setup and have a good way of figuring this out? Or anyone smarter than me (so everyone) have an idea on how to do this in some way?

Are you talking about value in terms of who you should/shouldn't keep?

For my auction league, the Draft Dominator calculates VBD-based auction values (i.e., roughly what it would cost me to acquire them), and I compare that to what it would cost me to keep them.  That helps me in seeing who is over/under valued on my roster.

Do you still have to stay under the cap with the players you draft, or is the cap only applicable to the players you want to keep? One thing I'd do is get the VBD value for each potential keeper (based on your league scoring), and divide by the cap cost to keep them.  That will show you which keepers are giving you more/less bang for the buck.

If your new draft picks need to stay under the cap, you could compare their "cap hit" based on ADP to the cap hit required to keep them.  If not, then you don't really have a comparable "draft cost" to compare with your "keep cost".

I think this is what makes my system difficult. The only time the "cap" comes into play is in keeping players. After keepers are established, there is no cap for the season.

I think your suggestion to take a players VBD and divide by their cap value is probably the way to go. Not perfect, but probably the best I'll be able to do. Where it really fails is in comparing values of players versus draft picks, which makes evaluating trades involving players and draft picks difficult.

Yeah, especially when you don't know who other teams are going to keep, and therefore who might be available at the spot you're giving up.

If you rank the entire pool by VBD, you should have at least a rough idea of the value that lines up with the draft spot you'd be giving up to keep them.  For example, in one of my leagues, DD has Aaron Rodgers as the 16th ranked player by VBD.  So if I can keep him for around the 16th pick, I probably do, but if I have to give up the 8th pick, maybe not.
