How to deal with difficult neighbor with a barking dog... (1 Viewer)

top dog

Footballguy
We have this neighbor, not directly behind us, but 2 doors down on the street behind us. Pretty much every house has a 5 foot chain link fence for their property.

This guy has a rottweiler that he keeps outside 90% of the time. It just barks and barks and barks... It is pretty annoying when every single time I let one of my dogs outside, it just sits there and barks.

I had an interaction with the guy a few years back. He is not easy to reason with the guy.

I've been reluctant to call the police over a "barking dog" as I don't want to be THAT guy. Plus, I don't want to turn this into a war where he calls the police on us any time there is a dog bark or music playing.. He would definitely be THAT guy.

I figure I can try talking to the guy at some point this spring, but I'm sure based off his personality, it's not going to be very productive.

I'd sleep with his wife (he doesn't appear to have one) and start hiding dogs I guess...

Poisoned steak. My in laws did this years ago. Not for a barking dog but a dog the neighbors let run wild even after it attacked my wife when she was little.

In my experience, you either become the degenerate who plays dirty and poisons the dog, or you're the tough guy who can pull off some intimidation, or you move. I moved. Barking dog was just one of many factors but it was a big one. In our case it was a next door neighbor, so we heard the dog constantly even inside with the windows shut. Became almost torture after 2 years, messed with my stomach. Good luck.

Just live with it.

It sounds like he will not sit down and have a reasonable discussion on what to do so anything you say is going to make him defensive and cause bad blood.

I would consider dealing with police if the barking is going on during night hours otherwise just sounds like you will be chasing your tail

I'd just feed that dog massive amounts of high fat chop meat until it became so obese it didn't have the energy to back.

This can be a serious pain in the ### and not a laughing matter. I had this exact scenario in my last house. The couple directly behind me would let his dogs out in the back yard first thing in the morning when they got ready for work, and they'd stay there all day long. These dogs pretty much dictated when I was going to get up, even though I worked second shift. Good times. I went over to talk to the guy respectfully. Hardcore redneck dummy. "Well he can't be locked up inside all day!" was the explanation I received. Nothing changed. I installed a window air conditioning unit in the bedroom for white noise, to drown out the barking. That helped considerably. Any local drug store will carry these soft, foam earplugs which conform to the shape of your ears. Not terribly uncomfortable, and they help a ton.

But I finally bought a condo where dogs aren't allowed. Life is good. And quiet.

Yea,

I can understand how it can really ruin your life for a time.

What legal right does someone have if dogs are just constantly barking in day hours?

Mad props to the people who were able to take the mature route and just drown out the noise.

I would go to war over this if someone isnt reasonable

Do they neighbors complain of the porn being played constantly in your condo?

try talking to the rest of the neighbors about this issue ...if they all feel the same as you do go to the guys house as a group and express your concerns ...maybe offer to buy him a bark control collar... a show of numbers may actually make him feel bad ...he may comply with all of you

below are 2 other options...good luck

Contact your Environmental Health DepartmentDont' call the police or the RSPCA - If you need to take things further, don’t call the police or RSPCA, unless you have an otherwise valid reason to do so. Instead, get in touch with the Environment Health Department of your local authority.

They will investigate the matter and deal with it. Sometimes, even the owner of the dog might not be aware of the problem. For example, a dog might just persistently bark when the owner leaves the house and the dog cannot cope with being left on its own.

Initially, an environmental health officer will try to advise the dog owner of ways of overcoming the problem. The owner, for example, might be highly embarrassed about the problem themselves, yet have no idea how to resolve it, and the officer will be able to suggest methods for training the dog not to bark in an incessant manner.

3. Legal Action: Environmental Protection Act 1990However, if this doesn’t work, then it can lead to a Statutory Notice under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 being served upon the owner. This is a legal procedure which gives the owner around 21 days in which to resolve the issue. The Environmental Health Officer will do this on your behalf. If the problem hasn’t been resolved after that point, the owner can incur financial penalties and, as a last resort, the Act does have a provision whereby it can take away the dog from the owner.

In most cases, problem barking is caused by either neglect or, more commonly, because of insufficient training, so if you keep a dog yourself, be sure that it is trained properly in order not to become a nuisance. There is plenty of advice on the internet to help you with that, or you could get your dog enrolled in proper training and obedience classes.

how about a bb gun?
That wont drop a rotty.

Best chance would be an infection followed by a slow death
I'm not looking to kill it. Just give it a sting whenever it barks. Maybe it will start to associate the 2 and stop. If not, it will be a little therapeutic for you.
Other than getting prosecuted for animal cruelty and having this inconsiderate idiot neighbor decide it's full-scale war now, I don't see a downside.

How they going to prove it Columbo? Finger print the bbs?

Have no idea if it works but get a high powered dog whistle. Blast the dog whenever it barks.

I'd have no problem calling the cops on the ####### with the dog. Check the local laws and if he is not complying call them, who cares if you are "that guy". You already tried to talk to him so you did your part.

They're going to fly in the big dogs for this high profile crime

Just live with it.
This is probably the right answer if it's not disturbing you when you're inside. Dealing with it all day long even when you're in your home is pretty awful. It must bug his immediate neighbors a lot more. Have you spoken with them?
This.

So thankful the lady next door to us for the past 28 years keeps to herself and has no noisy kids or pets. If that were to change, we'd probably accelerate our decision to downsize or go condo.

Well, he'd be in his back yard with a rifle, shooting across several other properties, I'm assuming someone notices eventually.

Went through this a few years ago. First conversation ended with me getting an eff you from the guy. So I looked up the local laws and was surprised to find we had good ones. I called the cops for advice not expecting much. They transferred me to animal control who needed to witness the offensive barking, but since it happened at night from about 9 to 6am, they couldn't witness it as they were closed those hours. Recordings were no good as they had no way of knowing if I was inciting the dog. Two other neighbors got involved with seeking a solution. We tried a device and it failed. So we wrote a note citing the local ordinance which starts with a warning, then a $50 fine, then loss of the animal and/or a $1500 fine. I called animal control and told them we were delivering the note to my neighbor face to face and they offered to send a car just in case another eff you got more heated. The officer showed up in plain clothes and did not identify herself when the conversation began. Outnumbered and a little tired of the dog himself the owner admitted he had a problem, which was all the officer needed to hear to write the warning. Oddly that dog is still next door and very well behaved.

It is never a good idea to get into a war with your neighbor because they can make your life hell.

I suggest you getting the dog a toy.

I know most replies were in jest, but hurting the dog in any way is out. It's not the dog's fault the owner is inconsiderate.

My immediate neighbors next to me can't stand it either but they are a very quiet older couple that will NOT get in anything confrontational. His immediate next door neighbors are his mom and a buddy he hands out with all the time.

I like they no bark collar from amazon. Maybe sending some ads for bark collars to him will help him get the picture.

I feel your pain. Only multiply it by 20. Everyone has dogs here in Argentina and they bark all day and all night. I've just grown used to it. If there is 5 seconds where are dog isn't barking it's unusual. The woman next to me has 6 friggin' dogs. Six. :wall:

I had a situation a few years back. Neighbor's dog constantly barking at me on my own property, eating my dogs food, barking right below my window where I was sleeping middle of the day (I was working 3rd shift at the time) and trying to rape my dog. After awhile I just couldn't take it any more. This thing kept coming back even after I tried the BB gun trick. Finally I had my wife help me catch it and I made it disappear. Drove it a good 20 miles away into the next county and dropped it off out in the middle of nowhere. I couldn't bring myself to kill the dog even though I wanted to.

I regretted it later though. A few weeks later my dog also disappeared. The best dog I ever had too. A little dachshund, was my best friend. Haven't had a dog since.

I think if the dog is just staying on his own property barking there's not a lot you can do unless there is maybe a local ordinance or something.

A barking dog is that much of a bother? Can't just tune it out?
Why should he have to just deal with it?

Noise pollution can cause serious health problems over time. Tuning it out may seem like it is working but over time that stress builds up and eats you from the inside out.

We live in a society and people need to be courteous and control their noise whether it be barking dog, fat wife or rowdy children.

You regretted the distress you caused the dog and its owner? Or you regret possibly causing him to take retribution by taking your dog?

Regret my dog disappearing a couple of weeks later. I think about her often and hope they just drove her away like I did and maybe that she's still alive and ok. All that other dog had to do was just stay away from me and nothing would've ever happened to him. Neighbor was actually my niece. Me doing that caused a lot of problems looking back on it.

Why no words? I was in the wrong? I tried talking to them. Tried BB gun. Was I just supposed to go on forever without doing something to solve the problem?
