My son was in a coop school last year. Basically a group of 10 two year olds whose parents found a classroom for the year, hired a teacher, and shared responsibilities...
We were unsure if we were going to join again this year or take another route. My wife and her friend (who has a daughter in the coop as well) asked the treasurer (everyone has different responsibilities) if this years deposit was refundable, and they were told if we don't come back then we can receive our deposit back. Deposit was $500. Yesterday we officially joined a different program and requested a refund.
The woman who handles the money and my wife didn't get along last year to begin with. Now she responds to our request and tells us we need to find a replacement student to get our money back.
We've signed no paperwork and have a witness who heard her say the money was refundable.
