HP TOUCHPAD > Discussion Thread (1 Viewer)

Honestly, I have an iPad2 and am not in any way on the market for one of these, but if they sell for 99 bucks, I am sure I could find a use for it somewhere in the house. I'll pick one up. I suspect they'll go fast at that price -- I wonder when the sale starts. And is it on Amazon?

They appear to be sold out for now. Will check back tomorrow. A heck of a machine for $99. A Pre 2 for $50 is a heck of a deal.

If HP knew they were going to give these away for $99 why not just do it and undercut everyone instead of announcing you were shutting it down. Get these tablets in the hands of users and try again with the touchpad2

Appear to be 129 now at some of the B&M Retailers starting soon. Office Depot and Best Buy are rumored among others.

If these things can be rooted to put a real OS on them they are worth well more than 129. It could be a situation like on craigslist for unlocked/jb iphongs that go for a 30% premium because people are too dumb/lazy to JB their own phone.

These are nearly impossible to find anywhere. Every retailer I checked with today were sold out the minute they opened the door. The best hope is retailers like BestBuy, Staples, Circuit City are not selling at this price and instead are returning their inventory to HP. HP will have more available soon, but you need to be watching. I thought I had one bought online with an in-store pickup at Wal-mart. But they cancelled me.

HP Small Business still shows them in stock. They list $99, but when you add them to the cart it shows $399. They will price adjust, but it is impossible to get anyone on the phone right now.

The fact that webOS failed doesn't mean it was a bad os.
Agreed, in fact I think it's a pretty good OS. It's more polished than my favorite android. But it doesn't have the dev community backing it like Apple & Android does.Where HP went wrong was they tried to compete with the big players where they should have undercut Apple and compete with android in the discount phones and tablets. The Touchpad should have had an MSRP of 299 at the most.

Nobody gets more butthurt than Palm Pre 2 owners. I know a few dozen people actually owned them and loved them, but to some extent if it's that great and has no market share you have to get the dev to offer them well below market value to get some traction.

What will be funny is if WebOS gets some sort of Dreamcast like existence due to a quarter mil of these blasting out the back door at 100/per.

Yeah, it is nearly impossible now to order one. But inventory will not be a problem and they will continue to dump these things in the coming weeks. The Pre 2 for $49 is also a good deal if you want a cheap smart phone for some of these pre-paid services.

The thread on slickdeals just passed 2 million views.

For those that are following it they think Amazon is going to drop it very soon.

Best Buy has to have some remorse sending these back, the foot traffic on this product has been tremendous today.

Just bought one at BB a second ago. Was looking at some other things and nonchalantly asked a guy how many calls they got about the HP today. He said it was crazy because they thought they were sending them back but then got word to sell them at the reduced price. They were sold out of the 16s but still had two of the 32s for $149 each. Not sure if it's nation wide right now, but worth a shot.

A lot of hitting F5 to get to the end. Well see if they come...Hopefully only once.

Amazon is now on DEFCON 4 for full launch. My local BB said not today, but probably tomorrow they will release whatever they have left.

... Can't decide if it's worth it.
I'm not sure that I'd get any use out of a tablet computer. I pretty much don't use my smart phone for much more than checking the weather and as a cell phone (calls and text messages). I assume that if I like the tablet I'll use the smart phone's tether option a bit more when I'm out of wi-fi range, but I still don't know if tablet computing is the game changer for me that it has been for others. So I'm guessing that one of two things will happen-1) I'll get this, love it and want more and will be buying one of the "best in breed" in a few months knowing that I'll get my money's worth. This will become a toy for experimenting - like loading a hacked version of Android if it ever happens or the next version of WebOS when it is released to the open source community, or leaked to hackers.2) It will show me that $99 is just about all a tablet computer is worth to me. I know some might say that I cannot really get the full experience with a cheap knockoff, but oh well.So in either case it is a price point that I can justify taking it for a spin to see what I think. Either it does everything I want and need from a tablet (possibly from an ignorance is bliss perspective) or it hooks me in. We shall see. (ETA: Assuming it even ships at all.)

Not sure what to believe but it seems that the retailers might have changed their minds, or maybe HP did after seeing their servers meltdown today. Since I assume my order is dependent on the returns, I guess I'll have to wait out.For those wanting to try I hear that Firefox add-on check4change is how the pros are getting through the HP SMB site. My order was via F5. I can see it there on the HP site, but not sure they can and/or will fill it.

A few thousand of the 16's are on ebay for $127 shipped. Item #310332864546

Seems like it's worth the $20 not to have the hassle.

for those willing to pay a little more, look on ebay for datavis_sales reseller selling the 16GB for $120 + shipping.

they're selling a ton, wonder if they actually have that many.

A seller put some on eBay for $119 with $7 shipping with BuyNow. Worth the extra $$ instead of going through all the trouble.

picked up 2 at walmart. still had $498 as a price, but asked a manager to check their markdown pricing. she worked her magic and said they are now at the lower price.

This is pretty much how I'm looking at it, too. Wife and I have been thinking about an iPad for a while now, but just don't know if we'll use it enough to justify the price. This will at least give us a good idea. If we do end up getting one, this one can be for the kids or something. So far, it seems pretty cool. Wouldn't have paid $500 for it, but then again, I didn't have to.

Still stunned at the hysteria on this item. I mean it isn't thaaaaaat great. I think many are going to be pissed when they can't get any roi for the effort after eBay fees.
