HP TOUCHPAD > Discussion Thread (1 Viewer)

Still no news from CostCentral, other than the confirmation e-mail I got on Monday, which indicated that processing time may be slowed due to the large response.
What is your order number? At the rate they are processing the orders it will be Christmas before we get them.
---slick deal post below----i doubt we will get our touchpads. here reasons: 1. costcentral uses ingram micro's warehouses to ship out products (may be others as well, don't know for sure)2. many other online stores use ingram micro (ie buy.com,staples, datavision, etc) to stock some of their products. 3. I was watching # of available units since 6pm until making order few minutes shy of 7pm. available quantity didn't change at all. 4. even if ingram or whover had stock of touchpads (not costcentral) they sold them out. with product being discontinued and very slow processing, i'm pretty sure that order starting with 523-524 will be last to be processed. i'll be happy if i'm wrong and all of us will get our orders fulfilled.

For anybody else that actually got one of these and plans on keeping it, there's a really good guide to getting started using it, including ways to use a homebrew (think jailbreak-lite) to speed things up considerably on the machine, make the touch controls more sensitive, remove the ripple when you touch, etc.

It was pretty easy to go through the guide and so far I like the changes a lot.

New Touchpad? Here's your "Get Started" guide

Mine arrived today via Amazon. When I get time I will load homebrew, which also opens up the door to more apps. WebOS is really a nice operating system. I can see it getting a cult following in the future, especially if HP opens it up.

The android plot gets a little thicker. It seems quite a few deved droid TPs were "mistakenly" released. I wonder if this was a parting gift to the world. If so I would expect a rom code to leak soon.

OK, the entertainment value is drying up. Bryna hasn't said anything informative for days, just "a bunch of staycalmmybabies". Nothing from HP one way or another concerning my specific order, just the note that makes it sound like my order was in before the cut off. I can see the order on line, but have received error clicking on it since Monday.

While my post on this have probably always been boring to the rest of the FFA, this is losing steam now for me.

My 8/25 order at 1:38 pm on HP SMB site was processed today. Credit card was charged and unit was shipped via UPS Blue.

Cool. I was being entertained for a while by the commotion, but that has all died down. Or at least gotten redundant.

Finally got access to HP apps. Downloaded Angry Birds and a few other things. Still keeps hanging up trying to update the system. I think there are too many other people trying to do the same.

Mine got hung up a few times, too, and I had to tap to get it going again. But it didn't take more than an hour or so total. If it's still not going through, there are instructions on how to do it with webOS doctor from your computer early on in that guide I posted the link to. Sounds pretty straight forward.

I got mine today. The update servers are absolutely slammed. A 32 MB update is impossible to get down right now.

I'm going to go ahead and say I'm impressed with this thing so far. There is a lot to like about the OS. Main hardware gripe is that the whole thing is heavy, and without some sort of case it's sliding around in my lap and places.

I am not sure I will move it to android until webos is dead and gone for a long time. AVI+DIVX support is tremendous.

i have a Palm Pixi phone and rather like the WebOs. I am half considering getting one of these touchpads if it is still possible at $99/$149.

webOS is probably the best mobile operating system out there, just without a definite future and not having the large library of apps. The kindle app is great, angry birds is great, and the web browser is ok. Got my 50Gb of online storage which could come in handy. Need to explore preware some more, but being able to overclock is a nice upgrade.

So has anyone actually received one of these things?

My buddy's order from the HP website, previously confirmed, is now apparently no good -- he got an e-mail today indicating they are all out. Bummer. I'm still waiting to hear from CostCentral, or whatever crappy website it was that I ordered from.

The only one of 7 I ordered that actually came was from cost central.

oh, the inability to join ad-hoc networks is really bad. Forgot to mention that. If I knew it it would almost have been a deal killer for me.

Some really brilliant marketing by HP here. They can drag people along for years doing limited runs of their TouchPads until they have the most market shrae.

More like dumb luck. Not sure if they will figure out how to make money on it, but there is opportunity here.

Don't kid yourselves. There is absolutely no opportunity here.
Too bad the Touchpad doesn't use ink cartridges
Yeah, don't give them any ideas. Perhaps $100 for replacements for the proprietary batteries.

HP screwed the pooch on this one. Rash decision making by a CEO who has no interest in running a hardware company. That said, the Touchpad can be a cheap Android tablet for people not interested in spending hundreds of dollars on one. WebOS is officially dead though and they've handed Microsoft a huge gift.

Has there been a change here? Everything I've read said webOS will still be developed. HP is just scrapping the tablet hardware.

I doubt that's a viable option. At $99 most estimates would have HP losing money on each Touchpad sold. Even if they could squeeze a minimal margin out at that price, which i highly doubt, they'd still be facing fierce competition from Chinese manufacturers for the low-end market. Not to mention the fact that becoming known for being the cheapest option would do irreparable damage to their overall brand perception and most likely harm them in other, more important business areas.

I laughed. On a more serious note, apps are the ink cartridges of smart devices.

OTOH, HP has been a huge Microsoft partner the last few years, really championing Windows OS for desktops/laptops. Who is going to be the standard bearer for that now?I wonder what the reaction from HP channel partners will be? HP wanted to be the Wal-Mart of the enterprise, where you could buy everything from printers and laptops up to servers and networking gear for the data center. And it was speculated that HP wanted to get into the VoIP business with the 3Com purchase. Now that there's less incentive to push HP gear, Cisco might be a big winner here with their big move into servers the last two years.

Time will tell. Was really surprised at the news when it was announced.

rooted, or whatever these palm kids called jailbroken and this thing absolutely flies through stuff. This is a serious machine.

Trying to get adhoc working. Apparently it's a problem with my iphone. back to google

Interesting that HP is going to make one last batch of TouchPads. Not sure how many, but I would guess in the neighborhood of 100K. Not sure they will keep the $99 pricetag, I think they would still fly off the shelves at $149. Still has to be a money loser once all the supply line costs are included, and probably is not making the competition very happy as their sales had to come to a near halt in the last week. Although Apple following is almost cult-like so they probably were not hit that bad.

One of things I read is that the reason major retailers wanted no part in selling these at $99, at least at first was because it would cannibalize the sale of other tablets. The thing is I think that HP has just changed the game and one or more of the vertical market players is going to go the "ink cartridge" model soon enough. That is give away the hardware to make the money on App sales, music sales, video sales, etc.Apple is already doing this with everything they make, except for the part of needing to take a loss on the hardware.

This model probably makes WebOS a target for someone that simply makes hardware today.

(Just my idle speculation. This all moves so fast that this could be 100% true when I hit the post button, and completely irrelevant by the time it is posted for anyone else to read.)

Things I like

-Multitasking works like multitasking should work.

-I like the "just type" thing. No need to sift through folders or screens to find stuff also works for the browser

-Speakers actually sound good, no really.

Not a fan

-The browser itself caches WAY too much crap. There may be a jailbreak for this that I'm not aware of.

-heavy and a pain to hold without a case

There is a huge jailbroken app store with lots of tweaks and fixes. Will be browsing that alot today.

Hit up PreCentral. Download preware. There are a number of fixes for this. I am very happy with mine after installing the patches.

I actually have fallen in love with a few of the gestures that I changed my activator settings on my iphone to mimic them.

Amazon would be the only player right now that has the infrastructure in place to go this route (outside of Apple that is). Google/Moto could eye this approach as well, but it would be a complete betrayal of their current hardware partners in Android to do so.
