HP TOUCHPAD > Discussion Thread (1 Viewer)

Interesting that HP is going to make one last batch of TouchPads. Not sure how many, but I would guess in the neighborhood of 100K. Not sure they will keep the $99 pricetag, I think they would still fly off the shelves at $149. Still has to be a money loser once all the supply line costs are included, and probably is not making the competition very happy as their sales had to come to a near halt in the last week. Although Apple following is almost cult-like so they probably were not hit that bad.
One of things I read is that the reason major retailers wanted no part in selling these at $99, at least at first was because it would cannibalize the sale of other tablets. The thing is I think that HP has just changed the game and one or more of the vertical market players is going to go the "ink cartridge" model soon enough. That is give away the hardware to make the money on App sales, music sales, video sales, etc.Apple is already doing this with everything they make, except for the part of needing to take a loss on the hardware.

This model probably makes WebOS a target for someone that simply makes hardware today.

(Just my idle speculation. This all moves so fast that this could be 100% true when I hit the post button, and completely irrelevant by the time it is posted for anyone else to read.)
Amazon would be the only player right now that has the infrastructure in place to go this route (outside of Apple that is). Google/Moto could eye this approach as well, but it would be a complete betrayal of their current hardware partners in Android to do so.
Microsoft has the wherewithal to go this route as well with a hardware partner such as Nokia but it would be undercutting their core OS/app businesses.

The Xbox demonstrates some capability to manufacture consumer electronics (if you exclude the RROD) and sell apps via a private Marketplace. The Windows Phone OS would work very well on a tablet form factor IMO but again, there's the issue of internal competition with the full Windows OS. Maybe MS is right and the tablet market is growing up rather than down: enterprise customers will demand more functionality that can only be delivered via a modified desktop OS, not a mobile OS. But the Touchpad frenzy suggests consumers want cheap hardware and don't care as much about functionality.

I simply see it as the evolution of the tablet as it grows up. There's going to be room for a lot of tablets - on the higher end Windows 8 tablet, which enterprises demand, and at the low end, led by the subsidized Amazon tablet. Of course Apple will be right there too, but probably with some price pressure that will cut into their margin if not their actual sales. I don't think it's too much of a stretch to think that Apple, Microsoft and Amazon will be the dominate players. The other Android tablet makers are going to have trouble differentiating themselves since it will be tough to beat Amazon at under $299 and they can't go too high without going up against the iPad. The good news for them is that the Amazon tablet is likely to be missing some key features (camera, additional ports) so if they can price themselves under $400 they will be able to upsell their tablets over Amazon's.

Sony? Which means maybe not a "hardware company" at all, but maybe a media company (or companies). Viacom and Rhapsody?

Or maybe WalMart or BestBuy?

The saga of a SMB order continues with an actual E-Mail...

Dear Mr/Mrs SPORTS BOTTOMFEEDER,

Thank you for your interest in webOS and the HP TouchPad order XXXXXXX

The response to our price reduction has been overwhelming – both in terms of volume and in the energy and enthusiasm it has generated in our customers.

It has taken us longer than anticipated to work through the high volume of orders that were received. We apologize for any uncertainty this caused, but we are now in a position to understand our ability to fulfill your order.

Your order will be fulfilled at the discounted price. As we sold out of our existing stock very quickly, we are in the process of re-allocating stock to SMB customers. We should receive this stock within 2 weeks, at which time your order will then ship with free ground shipping. You will receive a shipping notification with a tracking number once your order has shipped. We apologize that these timelines are longer than indicated on the website at time of purchase.
So has the novelty worn off yet for those that were successful?

So has the novelty worn off yet for those that were successful?Actually this thing is really growing in me the more i set it up. I got a cheapass case which does the job which helps too. As a full browser and media player it can't get much better. As soon as I figure out how to get my iPhone from 421 to 433 to enable native tethering world domination will be complete.

Ok, this thing is just insane. I'm mother####ing split screening two sports feeds at the same time. Try even thinking about doing anything like this on an ipad.

I mean you can split screen two feeds, swipe over to your email and the audio still comes through so you can swap back when you want to see a play.

I really wish I got 2 or 3 of these for myself, not to mention as cheap gifts for people.

I ordered one for me, one for my parents, one for my sister, and one for the Curious George app. Hope to get them. Wish it was a little bit closer to Christmas...

Where are you getting sports feeds from?

The rumor is this "One last runs" is 1.2 million units and they will arrive on Oct 14th and go on sale Oct 17th and even lower prices. Should we believe it? I guess if you have several and trying to turn them over you might take notice, otherwise  I would not have normally posted this rumor since I won't be in line either way and because I would usually try to debunk before posting (just unexpectedly being pulled away from this stuff right now), but for those of you still interested you might just want to see if you hear the same or if it is debunked the next few weeks. (Or already). My order keeps having the "planned shipped date bounced up" a day every day first thing in the morning. Wonder what that means?

ESPN3 works on my TP. Applied the Hulu fix (not the patch) and can stream that as well. If they can just get silverlight to run on this thing I would be in heaven. As a side note, people have told me that HBOGo (or whatever it is called) works as well.

I'm still pretty much in love with this thing. My wife calls it my "fake ipad". Bottom line is that the thing is a great couch streamer/surfer. I'm still stunned how good the speaker quality is. I'm going to try to get a few more of these if I can. Will be great to have 2-3 of these setup around the projector room for single game streams while NFLredzone is playing on the projector.

Could have scored a few of the 32GB ones yesterday from Tiger Direct. They had a bundle for $199 with the touchstone and cheap case. The deal was up for a while, but I left my cc in my car and by the time I figured it out it was too late. I have one, but my wife is telling me she wants one. I would rather just find an unbundled 16 GB for $99 anyways.

I think it would have been smarter for hp to sell the tablets to the general public, but they need to keep employees happy.

These are pretty slick toys, but I use my netbook more. Just don't like on screen typing.

Just a heads up for those who got one of these things:

I noticed a hairline crack on mine after a couple of weeks. It's on the edge, right above (at the corner of) one of the speakers. I didn't have a case, but I never dropped it or anything. After looking of the precentral forums, it sounds like it's an issue for a decent number of people.

I called HP and was offered either an additional year to my warranty or a free case. I was slightly surprised that they didn't offer to replace it, but I'm not sure if I would want to send it back anyway and trust that I'd get a new one. They said that it is only really cosmetic anyway, and that seems to be true. I took the case and got it a few days later. I actually like using it with the case, as it allows you to prop it up which is handy when you have it on, say, the kitchen counter or something. It's not as nice as that iPad one, since it covers but doesn't actually stick to the front of the tablet, but it's better than I expected it to be.

Anyway, keep an eye on that area above the speakers for any cracks forming.

If anyone wants one of hp's cases for their touchpad, let me know. They ended up sending me two, probably because they thought they dropped my call and another agent called me while I was still on hold with the first. They must have assigned me two different customer service numbers which each generated an order.

I'm not looking to make money off of it, but you can pay the shipping fee if you want. Just looking to help out a fellow fbg.

It appears the OnSale buyers are going to have an early crack at the second round of material here. Details are sketchy right now.

Must Have Tech Product of 2011

Just for goon....

“Perhaps no other technology vendor, apart from Apple, has ever created such hype for a technology product,” Canalys continued. “HP has established a lead in the race to be the number two behind Apple in the pad business ...

A couple more days before I see mine...

Another rumor is 10/31. Who knows  Here is one notification list for Tiger Direct, though who knows if they will have them. Or if this is just a way to build the mailing list.

It has been twenty years since my crab murdering days, but reading the sense of entitlement that those just hearing about the HP posting out there on the web brings me back to those summers days where the supply did not meet demand with "all the special customers" that were more deserving than the "ordinary customers" in front of them.

Well, this is just a silly statement. Off the top of my head, Sony has massive hype when they launched the Playstation 2, and Nintendo followed with the Wii. Both of those products had true hype, with overnight lines, massive shortages and media coverage. There is only hype for the TouchPad because of the fire sale, and even then I doubt that the average consumer even really knows about the TouchPad or cares. The hype is big in tech circles, not the mass market. Secondary market prices are still selling for well below original MSRP. When PS2 and Wii launched, you saw scalpers able to move those products for double or triple their price, which I think is a good barometer of true hype.I do think it's cool that HP could capture 10% of the tablet market, but it's just not sustainable for them. The company lost $100 million on sell-off of the first run of TouchPads. How many times will shareholders be willing to eat the cost for market share. I don't see HP having the ability to make that money back afterwards, that's a lot of apps and movies to sell to an audience that is only there because of a fire sale in the first place.

The smart thing for HP to do is to make another couple million. They will probably lose another $100 million, but it will make their webOS something of value that could be sold off for a few billion. A few minor improvements could make webOS the best mobile OS out there. They just need the user base to generate more apps.

But what level of market share do they need before it's valuable and who would be an interested party? We don't have any concrete numbers from the first run that I've seen, but if you take a $100 million loss and conservatively estimate that HP lost $100-$200 on each unit, that would put the first run between 500,000 to 1 million units. Most likely it was even less. Now consider that Apple sold 9.25 million iPads last quarter alone. Estimates put total iPad sales around 35-40 million units to date. So without even considering Android tablets, HP would have to sell another 4-5 million TouchPads to get about a 10% tablet market share, losing $500 million to $1 billion in the process. Doable I suppose, but is a 10% tablet share attractive enough to a buyer considering it would be about a 1% share of the entire mobile OS market? I just don't see it happening.

Too lazy to read the whole thread but can someone give me a Cliff notes version of what cool things I can do with this tablet?

I ordered one for me, one for my parents, one for my sister, and one for the Curious George app. Hope to get them. Wish it was a little bit closer to Christmas...
The first one has shipped. Should be delivered today. Except I am 900 miles from home this week.
As noted the first one arrived last week (to my empty house). Used it for the first time yesterday. As for the rest of my orderDear SPORTS BOTTOMFEEDERThank you for your continued interest in webOS and the HP TouchPad. We regret to inform you that we did not receive enough stock to fulfill your order XXXXXXXX within the communicated estimated ship date. Your order has been placed on the prioritized list for the first shipments of the next stock receipt. You will receive a shipping notification with a tracking number once your order has shipped. We are expecting all orders to ship by the end of October or earlier. We apologize that these timelines are longer than previously indicated and that we cannot give you an exact date that your order will ship.If this delay is not acceptable ...::Thank you for your continued patience.Sincerely,Your HP Small and Medium Business Teamwww.hp.com/go/touchpadFAQ

I've got the one, was never really expecting even that so I'm good. But I expect the HP "comment" sections on some of their pages are lighting up right now.

The last three just shipped. :towelwave: There is a script that reads the order status from SBM that shows that quite a few shipped Friday. Since mine shipped today I assume quite a few went with it. I guess this fun is all coming to an end now.Edit: To fix link. Also note for those still hoping for one more shot that the buzz over the weekend was that the TouchPad order page reappeared - off and on - over the weekend on HP's site. Whether that means anything other than wishful thinking  .

I was spending yesterday here.

It's rare that a Downfall meme fits a situation so perfectly.

web os update 3.0.4 released today. There is an android dual boot that also seems stable. I am going to wait for ICS.

If anyone has a spare that they want to sell, shoot me a PM as I'll be happy to take it off your hands :hophead:
