Huge quake in Nepal (1 Viewer)

Maybe I'm blind and there's a thread already, please delete or merge if so. I've got a buddy up on Mount Everest right now. Really worried about him. :(

Isn't it early to be taking a shot at Everest? Or is he in base camp?

ETA: Eek, just read that 8 people were killed in Everest base camp. I hope your buddy is OK.

Holy smokes, hope your buddy is OK. Would be awful to be there now. He's probably best just hanging out on the mountain. Keep us posted

Cheers, guys...no word yet. He was in Kathmandu two days ago...assuming he was at least to base camp by today, and no idea how far up he was going, although I don't think he was planning on trying to summit.

Cheers..I think I posted the same link up above, and I have filled out a profile for Emil...hoping it gets some results soon. I'm sure it's total chaos there at the moment, with internet/phone service almost totally wiped out in the effected areas, and I'm sure if he's uninjured he'll be up all night helping the victims before even thinking about posting on his own behalf.

Best wishes for your friend and all the people affected. Over 1000 dead and no telling how many trapped. 7.8 on the Richter. Huge, devastating quake.

My fault.

Never even clicked your link.

Hang in there

I see what you did there. ;)

FFS....just found out another buddy was doing the Annapurna trek...last time he checked in on FB (about a week ago) he was in Pisang. No idea where he was when the quake hit, and no word from him yet. Just a total nightmare for the family members..

Had six members of a climbing group I'm in at various spots on the mountain or nearing it; all have been accounted for. Hoping you get the same news soon, onion.

Edit: make that eight people. All safe.

Really happy to hear that, Krista4! Trying to stay positive. My stomach is in knots waiting for news...and all I can think of right now is the (to this point) 1,500 folks whose lives were just snuffed out, and the poor family and friends of the victims who will not be getting good news when it comes in. I survived a 7.3 earthquake here in Taiwan, and it felt like Armageddon. Can't even begin to imagine the power of a 7.8. :(

It's just heartbreaking. I hope you'll get good news soon, but as you said I can't help thinking of those who won't.

Like you, I can't imagine the power of that quake. Biggest one I've experienced was Northridge in 1994, which was just a 6.7.

One of my good buddies and his sister were hiking the Himalayas next week. He tried to get me to go with him. Thankfully, I just got an email from him saying that the earthquake occurred 30 minutes before he landed in Kathmandu, so they diverted his flight to Qatar.

That is sooooooo lucky.

I might have spoken too soon. We've been told that two are at ABC (Camp II), one was on a summit attempt on the north side and three are in Lukla. Though all are said to be "safe", I don't know what that means in terms of those who are in ABC or on the summit attempt, with aftershocks and such. I don't know how they're getting those people down...

Any news on your friend, onion?

Edit: Good news as it appears everyone is now down toward Tingri other than the guy who was on a summit attempt. He is at ABC on the north side.

This is the most informative article I've read on the Everest portion of the disaster--what's going on, where people are stuck, whether any additional danger might arise (the good news is that they don't think aftershocks can cause any additional avalanches). Those stuck in the higher camps are apparently well-stocked, as they'll need to be since the Khumbu route will take a while to be re-established.

No word yet on either of my mates out there. One of Emil's group put up a photo on the 21st that was geo-tagged at Namche Bazaar, which would have put them still a few days away from EBC. Best guess is they made it to Dingboche and then had to turn back to Namche when the quake hit. The internet is dodgy at the best of times along the EBC route so I'm hoping it's just a case of no means to contact anybody and they are still en route or just too engaged helping with the injured. More than a little disconcerting going this long without hearing anything from anyone in the group, though..

Crap. Saw you had posted and was just hoping for good news. No news is better than bad news, at least. I'm sure it's nuts over there and they probably don't realize people are worried about them.

Just got word that one of my buddies in the area (Emil Kaminski) is SAFE AND UNINJURED. Huge relief! He is apparently in Gorak Shep, the last acclimatization stop before the base camp. Still no word on Michael Tandy. Fingers crossed..

Great news there. Hoping for the best on the other one too.

Woke up today with an email alert that there was new activity on the Person Finder page I set up for my buddy who was still missing in Nepal. Apparently his name appears on a handwritten list of SURVIVORS in Langtang. Apparently he and a group of survivors are holed up in a monastery in an outlying village that has been converted to a makeshift hospital. No word on his physical condition, but the fact that he wasn't immediately medevac'd out of there is encouraging. BRILLIANT NEWS to start the day!!

Feel terrible for the people of Nepal, my sympathy to the tourists on Everest is not quite there.

Maybe this mountain should not be messed with.

A former graduate student of mine - a really great guy - is from Nepal. He is here in the states, but his family all still live there ..and live near the quake site. They're alive, but the area suffered a lot of damage. He has set up a site to raise funds to help out back home. I know there are other major fundraising sites, but if anyone is interested in helping in a more personal way, you could consider this. Thanks.

Death toll is 2,500 and expected to rise. :(
4,000+ now

More dead than 9-11 and there's 41 posts in this thread.

Nepali lives matter.
:goodposting: Pretty typical American response.

If we can't relate, we don't care.

I donated some $ today and am keeping my eyes out for any other ways to help, but the response around here seems to be pretty blah.
There is a huge difference in an intentional attack and an act of nature. And the US leads the world in its commitment for aid to Nepal.
