If you're a gay hating, confederate flag waving pro wrestling fan, these are truly the worst of times

Everything revolving around this Gawker trial is like a circus. It keeps getting crazier.

No wonder Gawker was pushing for the release of the FBI tapes... They are hoping his image self destructs.

I don't support his racist comments, but I'm not sure if we want to be setting this kind of precident for breaking news. This and the sex tape were made in private without Hogans consent or knowledge. Cameras keep getting smaller and smaller. If this is fair game who knows what & who is going to have "leaked tapes" on a website.

Yea gawker probably should have sat this one out. They are clearly pushing their chips in.

In all seriousness, I posted this in the ***Official*** free speech thread. They're not simply pushing their chips in, it's been stated by a source or two that if they lose this suit, they're done.

They've got nothing to lose in this instance. They need to hope that the sex tape is newsworthy.

I also don't pretend to know much about Gawker. I'm just going on the reports.

Denton has made it clear that he doesn't have 100 million. Every trick in the book is worth doing to try to save his business.

I know the "I have black friends" doesn't convince anyone ... but I had thought that Hulk Hogan was close to both Mr. T and the Junkyard Dog in real life.

They aren't losing that suit. He's made himself and his sex life a public display in the past.
Odd that they're so worried about it in that jurisdiction in front of that jury, then.

But they probably shouldn't.
You should be worried anytime your business could be shuttered.

I think the bigger issue is that it was stolen property. Bubba filed a police report that the tape was stolen. So they were dealing in stolen property. It seems like Gawker is trying to push the public figure angle to justify it, but the real problem imo is that it was stolen property.

I meant that they shouldn't lose the suit. Awful written language on my part.

Anyway, I'll bow out now until I read more about it.

They didn't steal it. Should they have reasonably known it was stolen? I don't know the details enough but that's not a 100M case.

Not all that surprisng really, WWF back in the 80's really was racism central. Look at the characters the black wrestlers played. Papa Shango - a Voodoo Doctor, Kamala - Big stupid black guy from africa controlled by a white guy under a mask, Bad News Brown - Street thug from Harlem, Virgil - a servant to a rich white guy, Slick - the inner city street hustler and so on.

I think all of those were WWF creations except for Kamala. I seem to remember that character back in the WCCW days before he joined WWF (although I think the side kick Kim Chee (Steve Lombardi) was added by WWF.

I think every character was a stereotype, regardless of race - Rowdy Roddy Piper, Sargent Slaughter, etc.

The 80s? Man, Cryme Tyme was a WWE act as recently as 2010.

But at least Vince is willing to let black wrestlers be the world champion now.

The CEO used the n word on one if their broadcasts, the current coo once worked In black face on national tv. And god almighty the jive soul bro video and the Akeem the African.dream gimmicks alone.

What are the financial & licensing issues with this? Doesn't WWE own rights to everything Hulk Hogan? Do they still own it, but just won't sell any HH merchandise? Or is this just severing his limited appearance contracts?

I want to know what Hogan's ( and Cosby's) lawyers did during these depositions.

"Oh, he's rambling about black people? Maybe I'll talk to him about that at the next break. I'm almost done with my Sudoku."

The tapes were released during the depositions or something. He didn't actually say this stuff during depos.

Ricky actually came up with the character himself. And someone mentioned that about Kamala, it was actually Jerry Lawler that came up with the Kamala gimmick back in the day.

Having talked with many of the wrestlers from that time, a common thing I've heard is that if you were a black wrestler back then, don't expect to be champion (the first black World and intercontinental champions in WWF didn't occur to the 90's. Soul Patrol is the sole exception when they won the tag belts in 83. That would be the last team with a black wrestler to win the tag belts for 10 some years.)

Pretty sure he pre-dates their trademark policy. (And that Bollea used the gimmick previously antway). Which is why he's used the gimmick with WCW and TNA etc. , subsequently.

Actually, Marvel owns it. Both WWF and WCW had to negotiate with Marvel for Hogan to call himself Hulk.

Let the record reflect that Bobby "The Brain" Heenan was always correct about The Hulkster being a phony.
I have run out of likes.
