Read this story yesterday, some seriously gruesome stuff going on there but in case you think this happened yesterday, it didn't:
"In 2013, federal authorities began investigating shady “body brokers,” businesses that sell donated bodies for research purposes, such as Arizona’s for-profit Biological Resource Center. That company was shuttered following an FBI raid in 2014, but eyewitness details are being made public for the first time—and they’re almost too grisly to believe."
The link in the OP explains it. There are legitimate research purposes for the purchase and sale of properly-procured human cadavers, and there are legitimate businesses providing services in this realm. What happened here is that a "body broker" company skirted the regulations, illegally obtained bodies that were meant to be cremated, obtained bodies in some other unspecified ways, and sought to undercut legitimate operators by selling well under market value. On top of that, some of the "body broker's" employees, charitably, had a yen for the macabre and treated the bodies both gruesomely and disrespectfully (to say the least).
In the old days the mob would cut off a pinkie for not paying back a loanshark or bookie. Not sure at what price they started cutting off other things.
