Hurricane Irma Roll Call (1 Viewer)

And if that were to happen I guess you could empty all the bottles and use them as a flotation device.
Some people's homes were fine but there was no way in it out around the flooding for days - and the water from the tap is contaminated because of flooding into retention ponds.

Folks, Sister, and Niece and Nephew are on their way north in my truck, driven by my brother.  They have lodgings in Georgia not far outside Atlanta.  The old folks were stubborn about wanting to not leave.  With the right track they may not have had to.  They have the windows and shutters and hurricane curtains to easily withstand a Cat 2 storm, and likely, with current tracks, that will be all Naples experiences, if that.  The thing is they are 4 feet above sea level and only a mile from the sea.  If this thing made a run up the west coast normal prudent precautions would not suffice.  Better safe than sorry, and I hope evacuation proves overcautious, but some monsters you don't mess with.  Waiting for this thing to swing hard right.  30 to 50 more miles and Naples will only experience a good tropical storm.  50 miles west of Miami and Naples will be a disaster  area.  Thin margins here.

Good luck Florida, we are all counting on you.

This is the part I don't quite get about all of this.  The storm is going to come and go in about a day.  My brother works for Publix and he's telling me people are losing their minds buying all the canned goods, water, etc.  Do you really need ten cases of water?!

The grocery stores, restaurants, etc. all have generators.  They'll be up and running on Tuesday.  Unless your credit cards blow away in the storm you don't need to start a riot over the last gallon of Dasani.
My friend always has guests..this is basically pretty much his usual supply on hand.

The mayor of Miami was on TV talking about people buying water and said "Why buy water..just fill up jugs and containers from the tap right now"
"

I installed a whole house generator at my sisters last time I was out.  The folks I got a propane powered portable one.  Sister's should kick on automatically on loss of power, and running nothing more than her fridge and freezer should last 48 hours without fuel, maybe more.  The upstairs neighbor at my folks place has promised to kick on their generator and plug in their fridge if their power goes out.  Presuming he can.

Every year I tell myself I need to bite the bullet and get one.  But it stinks trying to justify it in Nov/Dec spending 8k.  But now I really wish I had one lol.

I live in Louisiana and even I don't own jugs.

He basically was saying just fill up anything that holds water and you will be fine for a couple of days. No need to get a case of water from Walmart.
Yup.  Nothing to get around these parts.  I have a 5 gallon tank I use for camping and a bunch of smaller gallon jugs ready to go if needed.

A coworker lives on the 40th floor of a 45 story condo in downtown Miami. She was told by the association to evacuate because the sliding doors may not be up to the task. All windows are impact quality, but many sliding doors to balconies do not even lock properly.  She's renting and was thinking of buying.. not anymore. During Wilma, a big problem in condos was water pushed in the gap over the track and under the sliders by driving rain damaging carpeting and wood flooring. Wilma also pushed in many sliding doors that were not well attached, and broke many windows. Billions of dollars in high rise condos have been built since then.

I have friends and family in the Bahamas, though the current path of this thing likely has it going south and west of them.  Will update what I hear.

Update. Said employee left work early. She, her husband and baby will gas up and head north looking for a hotel. Our boss, a doctor, offered his large house in Pinecrest as refuge for his employees.

I'm in Bradenton on the West coast and I'm staying put and hunkering down. Got loads of White Oak Jai Alai to fall back on...................................

South FL peeps: If you want to flee north to Orlando, there are rooms available at Bahama Bay in Davenport. I have my mom, wife, kids and dog holed up in s 3-bedroom condo with a full kitchen for $100/night.

I'll either be in Ft Myers or inland in LaBelle, depending on where it looks to make landfall.  Locked up tight, boarding my families homes inland today.

Have ferried over there, camped and fished, hell my wife was there a few months ago.   But that is the island where no one lives.
Cape lookout is what the area is called here.  It pretty much entails Beufort, Morehead City, Atlantic Beach.   Some call it the crystal coast.

Where did you go and how long did it take?
I left Boca last night at 8:15pm, arrived in Davenport, FL (just West of Kississimmee) in 3.5 hours. Same trip with normal traffic should take 3-3.5 hours.

I did get off I95 in Jupiter due to traffic and took the Beeline Highway around lake okeechobee. Smooth sailing on the back roads.

Normally we're relatively safe here in the midlands of SC during a hurricane but as this thing gets closer they are saying on the local news that it could be heading right for us. I live about 10 miles west of Columbia, SC. Reports are that at a minimum we will get 12 to 18 hours of tropical storm winds. It will be more of a wind event rather than a rain event. The low country could see some flooding.

Irma Tracks to SC

My wife and I are staying put. I'm kinda like John Bender but I have 7 dogs, 1 cat, and 2 birds. We have plenty of food and drink. May go get some batteries and water and fill up with gas just in case.

Oh, and I have plenty of Bubba K.

Mandatory evac for my town starts at 3 PM tomorrow.  Shuttering the house tonight and driving to Atlanta tomorrow AM with my wife, mother and her dog.  I'll be physically safe, but I can't promise they all make it back alive.  Hopefully I still have a house to return to.

I'm in Charlotte and I'm staying put regardless.  If the forecast is bad Friday night the wife and kids will head to the in-laws in NY Saturday morning and try to get ahead of any potential grid lock.  I will stay and watch the dogs and house.  Have plenty of supplies to last a long time.

Supplies are a big deal put the lack of power is huge.   For Hurricane Fran we went 2 weeks without it.   Hot, no AC, no fridge, etc.   I do have a generator now though.
