Hypothetical scenario - please give hypothetical advice (1 Viewer)

Henry Ford

Footballguy
Someone (let's call him Jim) comes to you and says he got a disturbing email. The email said something to the effect of "Hey, Jim, you don't know me, but I pulled all the private photos and video off of your iphone remotely while learning how to hack apple systems, and I think I may send them to your girlfriend."

Jim asks you for advice. He tells you that the photos/video in question are "sensitive" and "embarrassing" but not illegal. What's your suggestion?

If this had happened, it's possible I would have told him that if none of it was illegal, to tell his girlfriend about it and then tell the guy to go #### himself. Now I'm wondering if that's the general consensus.

But she caught me on the counter (It wasn't me)
Saw me bangin' on the sofa (It wasn't me)
I even had her in the shower (It wasn't me)
She even caught me on camera (It wasn't me)

Wait... so the guy is threatening to send the GF pictures of herself?

Has the guy been doing hidden video, or does she already know about these? Hypothetically.

I think that, were this a real life scenario, he'd just be afraid that she'd be mad he didn't take care that no one else could get them. Also, embarrassed and feels a bit like there's a weirdo who has pictures of his naked girlfriend and him doing dirty things that may get posted online and sent to his employer. He'd also be afraid of them getting out while he's trying to become a lawyer.

Hypothetically.

Why the hell would dude be concerned about the GF finding out he keeps compromising pics of her that she likely sent him?

Tell Jim to respond, "And? Why would my GF want pictures of herself?"

Unless the pictures are of Jim with John.

If there is no illegality and the pictures are of the current girlfriend, hypothetically of course, then tell hacker to pound sand.

Wait, you know John?

Seriously, I think the best advice is just to send the person a picture of his penis with an insulting email. I feel pretty strongly about this. Anyone think that's a bad idea?

Okay, I guess I can trust you guys. This conversation really just happened. In my office. With a very frightened looking law clerk.

If the hacker wanted to post them on the Internet or play some five on one with the pics paying him to get them back really doesn't solve the problem. So might as well at least have fun with it.

Also, you should feel free to let him know that since he was careless enough to keep photos of his GF on his phone you suspect he'll never make lawyer anyhow. Then when he laughs tell him you're serious. You might as well have some fun too.

 he met the requirements. Welcome to the 9th floor.
Right. He's trying to become a lawyer not a judge or politician. Sure he may have those goals longterm, but what are the odds random hacker kid is going to still have copies of those pics thirty years from now? ETA: Besides, thirty years from now all of his peers will probably be like "who didn't have naked pics on their phone?"Schlzm

Why would there be a big scandal? Is he someone? Is she?
No. And no. I'm confused, too. It seems obvious to me that someone with no money, hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loan debt who has done nothing illegal should immediately tell this person to go to hell.

He thinks pretty highly of himself. Why would his employer care unless his GF is a partner's wife?

What kind of perv are we talking about here?

Are talking two naked women with a funnel and a fish?

Ask him to meet you somewhere, offer money to delete the files, bring a police officer with you.
That seems prudent. How do you feel about telling Jim to send an email containing just a picture of his wang?
I feel very good about that. Should I email Jim about the wang pix or do you think a phone call would make him better understand the seriosity of my counsel?

Either way, having someone else steal pictures of you committing unnatural acts with your girlfriend isn't going to keep you from becoming a judge. And it sure as hell isn't going to keep you from being a plaintiff's attorney.
