total hypothetical question here. i've been reading so much about players and teams, stats and figures, and my brain is beginning to get fried with all this homework, so i figured i'd throw out something different just for fun. i was thinking about how real teams operate in the nfl compared to fantasy teams. the recent stewart extension got me thinking: with green bay's pool of talent at wr, and the panthers' stable of rb's plus cam newton, would either team have considered a trade such as, jordy nelson plus picks or additional players for stewart or even williams? big multi-player trades go through all the time in the nba and in fantasy to make teams better. wouldn't a trade like this make sense for both teams? each has just enough slack at certain positions to make a deal that would better both teams.

what do you guys think? could something like this be pulled off in the real world? if the packers could swing that, they'd become almost unstoppable, but i think the panthers would also benefit greatly with an above average receiver like nelson. i do not know all the intricacies and nuances of owning a team and the trade process, but this seems like it could work; kind of like something belichick might be able to pull off.

jordy wont help the panthers as much as jstew will and vice versa. in most cases, a player has the most value to the team they are currently on, because that team has already adapted their game plan around that players skill set. jordy will help GB out a lot more then he would help carolina out and vice versa. the packers have been preparing for a pass heavy offense while the panthers have been preparing for a run heavy offense. thats just one of the many reasons trades don't get done very much in the nfl

also you have the salary cap to figure out. jordy has no chemistry with cam. as a young qb, cam probably wont be able to take advantage of the full route tree that jordy can run. as far as i know, steve smith only runs 3-4 different routes.

also, why would carolina trade jstew for a wr when they could have just signed garcon or vjax in FA? same goes for gb. why would they give up jordy when they could have signed tolbert or hillis without giving up anything?

trades only get done when team A wants to get rid of a player, and they sell them cheap (santonio for example). they sell them for late draft picks because they are more flexible and more likely to become useful for team A than a specific player would be

more trades get done in baseball because it is more of an individual sport, where chemistry and game plan issues are not much of a factor.

thanks flc. was just wondering why monstrous trades (dwight howard to l.a. for example) happen so frequently in nba, mlb, other sports...but not nfl. your answer clarified a lot.

In basketball one or two great players and a lot average role players can lead you deep into the playoffs and sometimes take you to a title, in the NFL you can have the best quarterback and receiver in the league and not make the playoffs if the rest of your team is average.
