I am going part time for a year, ask me anything (1 Viewer)

I am an RN, 41 years old.  I currently work three 12s a week 7a-7p.  I have decided to go part time (two 12s a week) for all of 2022, then go back to full time in 2023.  My managers have approved.

What a sweet guilty feeling I have about this.  Lot of PROs and CONs (more PROs from what I can gather).

So you already had 4 days off a week and NOW you are going part-time?

I also put in for vacation the week before my part time transition starts.  I asked my manager if that was poor form.  She said yes.  Then she asked me if I want the evening shift assistant manager position.  I literally said f### no.  She told me she hated me then walked away.

Thank you for your hard work during the covid surges. You earned some respite.

Do you work in a hospital or some other setting?

I’ve been part time for a while, and have zero regrets. TBH, not sure how anyone in healthcare continues to kill themselves working in the COVID era.

Inpatient hospital.

Yes Covid has made the job much, much worse in quite a few ways.

I dont think nurses will ever be able to not wear masks all day again.  It really freaking sucks doing my job with a mask on all day.

not an AMA, but more of an observation. Maybe you can use the time to turn a hobby into a business and if successful enough, you can keep working at the hospital part time and then enjoy the additional income from the side business.  good luck overall

What was your old salary?  What will be your new salary?  Why only part time for 2022?  What if you love it?
I am hourly.  My hourly rate is the same, roughly 40 bucks an hour (raise due soon).  I also have the option of picking up extra shifts on occasion which would be 60 an hour.  Not a bad hourly rate given I live near Cleveland.

Only part time for 2022 because the cost of my health insurance will stay the same for 2022 but the premiums will basically double if I stay part time in 2023.  Also my son just turned 6, so I think taking this year to do a lot more with him will be beneficial.  By the time 2023 hits he will be halfway through 1st grade and doing all day school 5 days a week, so going back full time at that point will be easier.

What if I love it?  Well, if it's going awesome, if I absolutely hate the idea of going back full time, and if we can swing it financially.........then I can see continuing part time.

Even if I go back full time in 2023, I can see doing this again some time in the next few years.

Theres a lot of reasons why I am doing this, but I guess it can basically be summed up as just wanting to take a mid career break.  I also have a couple hundred hours of PTO saved up.

Back to the financial.  I have been maxing out my 403b for like a decade and also maxing my HSA.  I am going to continue doing that, but chances are my current savings will dwindle a bit throughout the year.  If I was to continue part time I would definitely have to cut way down on the investments.

That is a thought, and I have discussed that with some friends lately.   I would also not be opposed to getting out of healthcare if something else was going well.

Or even take the time to find a different type of healthcare job.

I’m going to two back to back 16s. I want to be there as little as possible. Healthcare is miserable right now. Trying to plan how I can retire earlier as well. Seems like everyone is gone or looking, replaced with travelers whom I have to carry. Little effort to keep existing staff.

Good for you. I don't envy nurses working in this environment. Travel nursing seems like the only way to go right now.

I have an opening for a property manager.

Nothing personal against you, but how did the health care system change to where I need some at their best or I die, I get someone in hour 31 of 39 hours on 4-5 hours sleep?  Are you guys vetted to make sure you can handle this or is it a matter of needing warm bodies who show up and just pay the lawyers to handle any clean up?

honestly, if you are dying, you’d be lucky to get me at hour 35 of 36 vs someone they’ve rotated through nights and not used to working them. Even at hour 35, I can run circles around them. But yes, it’s mainly warm bodies now.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind going to 4 10s as an electrician, but construction sites don’t usually run that way, and the hours are good anyway. I don’t even mind some overtime, since that’s more money for me, but I can understand why you’d make the switch.

Thanks for the reply.  Again, that wasn't a jab a you.  I just think if any of us were starting a healthcare system from scratch, having people work insane hours and shifts wouldn't be first on the to do list.  Truck drivers are only allowed to work 11 of 14 hours before having to take hours hours off.

16s are about the limit. Healthcare is stretched so thin right now that low staffing in general is more of an issue than long hours.

This.  The other day I was working with two travelers who were probably making double what I make, and I was basically orienting them both all day.

Agree about not keeping existing staff.  Why offer so many sign on bonuses but not retention bonuses?  So silly

I have definitely worked with nurses who I wouldn't trust doing pretty much any remedial job out there let alone caring for actual people in need.

I have also worked many shifts with people (myself included) who had just worked a ton of hours/days straight and were way off their A-game.  It's either that or the other staff works short.  Both are bad

Welp, they just mandated the vaccine.  A good percentage of our staff is vaccinated, but I know a few who wont get it no matter what.

The decisions keeps looking better and better.

It wouldn't surprise me if they offer me some bonus to stay full time......I still wont though.

Ghost guy - do you feel that healthcare workers should have covid shots?

I’ve been in and out of the hospital since June dealing with my mother.  The healthcare staff has been great in very difficult times.

Yes........but I dont think they should be mandated.

For example they "mandate" the flu shot, but if you dont get if you have to wear a mask.  I think the same rules could pretty easily apply to Covid, and everyone has to wear a mask all day anyway.

However, not all healthcare settings are equal.  Huge difference between an ER, ICU, rehab, psych, hospice, nursing home, doctors office...........

It's much more important in some settings than it is in others.

I had gone back and forth on it several times, but as of right now I dont think healthcare workers (or most any workers) should be mandated.

Same, and I spent a ton of time side by side with covid patients through the worst of it.

I've been in hospitals 3 times in the last 2 months for non-COVID reasons.  None were for me but for my MIL (ulcer), my son (dislocated hip) and my grandmother (artery blockage).

Had really good staff every time.  The COVID precautions are still there and the fatigue is clearly a factor and staffing seems to be a struggle because getting seen/admitted is still slower than it was before.   However, the staff there are really doing their best and have worked through so much that I think they are some amazing and resilient people.

So yay healthcare workers.  We appreciate your hard work and I hope you get taken care of and get the time off needed to heal from this chaotic season.

I was walking into the hospital feeling good after a few days off, bout to have a good day.......then I remembered I had to put my mask on.  Ugh.

I said back when Covid started that if masks became permanent I would seriously consider switching professions.   As of right now there is no light at the end of that tunnel.

I feel like the guy in Alien.

The masks didnt really bother me TOO much until somewhat recently.  Maybe the past 2 months.

What is the coolest thing that you think you and your son will learn to do together in the next year?  I vote for a musical instrument, mountain biking, or knife juggling.

Patient slapped me in the face this morning.

Decision keeps looking better and better

Edit.....in case anyone is wondering what I did to deserve it, I said hi and apologized that breakfast was a little late......whack

Left bedside nursing a couple of weeks ago. For the past 3 weeks I’ve been doing nothing but giving Covid and flu shots to senior citizens for twice what I made bedside. Pretty neat.

Yeah, hate to admit it, but I can’t stand wearing a mask either. We’re also required to wear eye protection. Between the two, I pretty consistently have a low level headache at work. And it’s really unpleasant to walk up stairs with the gear on. Thankfully they just stopped perfunctory temperature and symptom screening upon hospital entry for vaccinated folks.

I’ll be surprised if the mask requirement is ever lifted when working directly with patients.

I see what you did there....

Nothing wrong with taking time for yourself so you can recharge.  You're probably not missing how horrible so many anti-vaxxers who are in the hospital with covid are being to our clinical staff.

But we need nurses pretty badly so if you'd hurry up and recharge that'd be great.

😏
