I can't control my dog (1 Viewer)

I have rescues. It can be a mixed blessing, or a roll of the dice.
She is a puppy mill dog.  I drove an hour, got there.  The woman grabbed Sandy out of the kitchen and put her in my lap

She was shaking profusely.  I let her down, and the woman stated it was her first time in the living room.  I was bailing and a small dog came out of the kitchen, and they were tugging on a toy, and sandy looked okay.  So I bought her, she couldn't get her out from under the kitchen table.  Well, a treat was thrown under, the table to get sandy, out and she got her butt kicked and was yelping.  They moved the table, I grabbed her and left.  I didn't know I was keeping her but she was,not staying there.

I like to talk about my past dog Sahara like she was perfect.  We had her loose and she messed up the walls in two different places.  There were holes where screws used to be.  Well she killed the dry wall while we were sleeping.   No problem.  Got lowes right up the street.  I puddy both holes, grab a beer, Sahara comes to me with a white puddy nose.  I laugh a little, tell her no.  Then fix what she messed up.  10 minutes later...yep, dog with white nose.  I remember putting her face near the puddy and yelling NO.  Third times the charm.

Well I tip my hat to you, truly. There are so many great dogs in horrible situations, so basically to me what you did is one small act of heroism in this sometimes brutal world. Unfortunately the one thing about puppy mills is that oftentimes there is a lot of inbreeding. The dogs can be not 'right' just because of breeding. Good luck.

If your dog was abused previously that's among the worst things you can do.  Traumatized dogs take a ton of patience and work, this won't be something that's rectified in an afternoon or even just a few weeks.
Yes sir.  I agree.

We have a rescue dog, Zeus, that we've had about 3 months now. He's a Golden Retriever from Turkey (presumably not purebred, but definitely mostly Golden). He was on the streets in Istanbul but we don't know obviously for how long. He was very obviously with a family/person before that as he has some training, was house trained, etc... so it's not like it's a feral animal we're talking about. They say he's about 3 but he acts maybe a little bit younger than that. We also have a 7 year old female Golden we've had since she was a puppy.

Zeus has been very receptive to training, did a dog obedience class. Needs some work on walking, but a new harness seems to have the pulling taken care of for the most part, save for the odd squirrel here or there. Pretty good with recall. He's an absolute sweetheart with people, so friendly and you can touch, poke, prod, etc... with no issues, including kids.

Through the training class, our other dog, friends dogs and taking him to farmers markets, etc.. for socialization, he's met dozens of dogs without issue - smaller ones, same size as him, not a lot bigger. On our walk last week we came across a Bernese Mountain dog and for the first time, Zeus got his back up and started to get a little bit protective.. not quite aggressive but I took him away before it got anywhere. I'm wondering now if it was a reaction to the size/colour/breed?  Maybe a bad experience in the streets?  Anyone had a dog like this who seemed to possibly be a bit breedist?
