I got a chance to read the Fantasy Index magazine this weekend. I don't get why people were looking forward to this magazine. I was totally unimpressed. The magazine lacked any quality information. The ranking and cheat sheets had no depth. virtually ignored IDP except for cheat sheet which were also lacking in depth. Did not provide any real strategy.

The one is did have was an experts mock draft and analysis of that mock. However that mock was really to shallow to be of any assistence except for top rounds. and the mock did not include IDPs in it. It should be noted that i have yet to see a mock draft that include IDPs.

As for Fantasy Index I'm glad I was able to read a friends copy and didn't waste the money on it. All it is one big advertisement for their overpriced website. I will give the benifit of the doubt that their website is terrifc but I'm tempted to spend that much money to find out based on the low quality of their magazine.

I'll stick with the Football Guys as my primary source and only fantasy website i will subscribe too.

I used to get FFI only because half our league used it to draft. I could do a mock of my league pretty accurately using the FFI. I think only 1 or 2 still use it. Last year out of 10 teams we had:

2 FBG

2 FFI

2 PFW

2 FF Forecast

2 others I was not sure of

Edit to add, I thought it was ok but nothing special.

I don't buy magazines to get information about football, I buy magazines to get information about my leaguemates that read those magazines.

I buy them (but never ffIndex) and then use them to draft. After a few drafts theres so many markings on them they're hard to read. Then I may buy another. This way I'm assured of letting intuition play a part in the way I draft. It's fantasy football after all, not rocket science. I do pretty well. I of course also use this site and whatever else I can get my hands on.

I agree. Ive never found FFI impressive or worth having. There are a couple mags I do like and always find informative, FFI is certainly not one of them. But I do hope that the other players continue having this magazine on hand when they enter the draft. :excited:

I use a number of source but I take the time to build my own color coated spread sheet and print it out and that is what i draft with.

Hmm. Don't get the hate for FF Index here.

With any magazine, the rankings, etc. are outdated by the time that you draft. That's true with any magazine. In fact, magazines are really no longer necessary, if you're looking for projections/cheatsheets simply hit the web and you'll be armed with all you need.

With that being said, I really enjoy FF Index and buy it every year. Why? Because they have more detailed analysis than any other FF magazine. FF Index does a great job not only at telling you what they're predicting, but why they're predicting it. The analysis is the key. When I read FFI, I agree with some of their predicitions, and disagree with others, but I always know why they're thinking what they're thinking.

For example, with regard to RBs there is often a lot of discussion to how they've done in the red zone. For WRs, there is often a red zone discussion, with analysis like "so and so was only targeted X amount of times in the red zone, but scored on most of his catches and his quarterback was looking his way more later in the year". This is good stuff. Do you know which QBs trailed off badly at the end of the year? Do you know which kickers ranked middle of the pack actually were best of the top half of the year? All that stuff is in FFI's mag. Another thing I like is that with their analysis they state their assumptions and state how much to adjust a ranking/projection up or down based on whether a player is winning a job, looks recovered from an injury, etc.

I'd make a similar analogy to poker. I play a lot of hold em. Poker is a game where you have few choices at any point (raise, call, fold, check, etc.) but there is a huge amount of factors to consider when making any decision. Saying, "folding is a good play here" is worthless without telling why you should fold.

In addition, I play in two dynasty leagues, so I like detailed FF analysis of the rookies. Most every other magazine pays precious little attention to this area. I found FBGs magazine to be a big offender in this area. FBGs has several guys that are the cat's pajamas with regard to dynasty info. The site (board, content, blog) is great in this area. The magazine is not. I started to read the rookie section, and it just wasn't worth anything for rookie info.

If you draft off of a cheatsheet or projections downloaded off the web, you're more or less letting someone else draft for you. I like to start with projections from a good source, and tweak accordingly. When I'm adjusting those projections, I've found a lot of the analysis to be critical in factoring in why I move a guy up or down. The best source of analysis, IMO is this board. (I'm actually a big fan of the FBGs blogger as well.) But if you want a hardcopy to read on a plane, in the bathroom etc, FFI is my favorite. (I get the FBG mag as well, but rank it a distant second.)

My two cents. I think its easily the best mag and worth the $7.

I find no detail in it I found it quite shallow and useless

I think a lot of people in this thread got burned by the Tatum Bell cover...

FFI is certainly an excellent mag, so far as mags go. Ian Allen is also very accessible and responsive, and is an terrific FF mind.

:)
Same here. Several of the guys in my league buy it every year and refer to it as "the bible". I buy it to anticipate their picks and pummel them with mine.
Same.....the only other things FF mags are good for are reading on the crapper or reading while camping

:bag: I don't get it either. Ian has always provided quality analysis. Now, say what you want about it's usefulness in August when it's written/published in/before May... but it's still good insights and, goshdarnit, I like being in their Experts Poll... I still love our FBG mag and put it up there with any in the biz, but FFI has always been a solid, informative read.. (especially for the noobs).

FF Index magazine is a great read, always has been for 15 yrs (or more) ? Not sure what you saw this yr that you didn't like but I found it delightful. Also the FF Pro Forecast and FF Draft Book by Emirl Kadlec are long-time faves of mine.

Ian Allen is about the only "talented" writer in the FF Industry. If you're buying a mag for fantasy "advice" or "strategy", you're likely donating your entry fee to whatever type of league you are playing in.

I enjoy buying a few magazines for the "experience" - it just means we're closer to the season starting.

But I do enjoy ESPN's FF Magazine....it does have the most entertaining articles about the game that we all love.

I have a serious question here: Lots of folks always say they buy magazines to see what their league-mates are up to...but is their any chance that some of that is self-fulfilling prophecy? "Bob" buys a copy of the magazine because "Tom" has it, and Bob wants to keep tabs on Tom. "Chris" buys a copy of the magazine because "Bob" has it, and Chris wants to keep an eye on Bob. "Joe" buys a copy of the magazine because "Chris" has it, and Joe wants to keep tabs on Chris. Etc.There's only one league I play in where the guys use a magazine to help them at the draft.....that's my league to pay-off my annual dues in all my other leagues combined. ;) Are people SERIOUSLY playing in quasi-competitive leagues where people use magazines to make decisions about draft picks, or do folks just enjoy shooting fish in a barrel, taking candy from small children, etc.?

Who needs a magazine for a draft .

Damn :goodposting:

You can call me prejudice but every time I see someone show up to a draft with one of those random magazines that came out in June... I laugh inside.
