I LOVE roundabouts (or roundabounds) (1 Viewer)

We need more of them. I do not care for people who fear the roundabout. Embrace them America, we may be behind the times on this but there is no shame in admitting that other countries have nailed this intersection thing.

more roundabounds please!!!

I'll be the roundabout
The words will make you out 'n' out
I spend the day your way
Call it morning driving thru the sound and in and out the valley

mythbusters did an episode testing whether they are actually quicker than normal 4 way stop sign

Seattle loves these things. What's the ruling on gong left the wrong way instead of going all the way around when nobody is coming?

FOUL!

however driving around it multiple times while yelling "roundabound!!!!" (or roundabout) out the window is not only permissible, but encouraged

and kids love it

we have three of them on one road all in a row, it is awesome

Never heard "roundabound". Please stop using that.

The list of accepted terms are: roundabout, circle, and rotary.

And, yes, they're awesome.

We've got 3 big ones out here in Flemington, NJ. Love 'em. Traffic would be unbearable without them. I will say that they take some getting used to when driving in a country that drives on the left hand side of the road...I went to Ireland last year and between the shifting left handed, and going clockwise around the roundabouts, I really had to concentrate.

Does NJ ever combine a roundabout with a jug handle? Not sure how that would work, but it would be awesome if they did that.

That's awesome. Weird, though, didn't see "roundabound" on there. Must not be a word.

DC has several circles, but the "best" is Dupont Circle. It has 2 circles, one inside the other. Oh, and like many DC circles, it includes traffic lights.

Yes they are, as long as the people using them know what they are doing. Not the case here.

They are safer than either four-way stops or traffic signals. They reduce accidents by about 40 % according to NHTSA.

Big stink when we built some around here, but people are eventually getting used to them.

Great thread. I wish every intersection that has 4 way stops would be replaced with roundabouts. It's amazing people so many people get so fricken confused on when it's their turn to go at 4 ways.

Slow down. Not every 4 way stop is in a rural or suburban area that has the space to put in a roundabout. A lot of urban intersections work well as 4 way steps.

Come to DC. You'll get over it in a hurry.

Grew up in NJ and learned to love the circles. There are a few intersections around here that are in desperate need of one.

I like them as well however they need to bigger than the whole intersection. I have seen the middle island, essentially, carved out of the middle of a small intersection so the turn is very tight. Not good. But, if they are large enough, two lanes, they are quite useful.

Same here 3 in a row on the way to my house. It's great I'm very smooth on the roundabouts.

In MN these have been getting popular. But they're making them so small that you really have to slow down. Terrible engineering.

I love the ones in older cities in Ohio where they're downtown and huge. You just cruise in there and it's a free-for-all because 15 cars can be in it at a time and there are no lanes.

In MN if there's more than two cars you practically need to stop before entering because there's no space and you can't see well enough to anticipate. Nobody signals to exit (of course most signal to enter ) because you're in such tight turns and it comes up so quickly that there's barely time to have it help the next guy.

Huge fan of the roundabout.

We have one of these things in our area called a "Diverging Traffic Diamond".

http://www.divergingdiamond.com/

These aren't designed to make traffic flow any faster like the roundabout, but are designed to make busier traffic intersections safer and prevent accidents.

They're a little strange to get used to, but once you've been through it a couple times, it works well.
