I may have just killed a family of cardinals (1 Viewer)

I have a plum tree right next to my house.  I noticed the Japanese beetles were going to town on it.  I went and grabbed the bottle of Bug B Gone in my garage, connected to the hose and started spraying down the tree.  I paused because the bottle hose connection was leaking significantly, and that is when I heard a relentless chirping sound.  Looking through towards the back of the tree I saw a female cardinal and she was not happy.  There was a nest in the tree closer to where I was, but I could not see into it as it was above my head.  I grabbed the branch it was on and gently pulled it down just far enough where I could see at least two wide open baby beaks sticking up over the rim of the nest.  I couldn't see into the nest too well as I did not want to pull the branch further down or accidentally knock the nest out so there could be more than two.  I let the branch go gently.  I stopped spraying, but I already soaked those poor little bastards with Bug B Gone.

Hoping things work out for them/you.

The lesson in this is we really should think about the way we treat the environment.  Chemicals to kill bugs, weeds, etc...  Can't be good for anybody or anything...  probably a natural way to take out the beetles, like traps, etc.

I was gonna mock you with a Jack Hannah meme or something, then I found that there really are beetle traps on google.

There's an old wive's tale that says a cardinal is a representative of a loved one who has passed. When you see one, it means they are visiting you.

The birds were probably infected with mites and you helped them out.

(just keep telling yourself that)

Mommy bird is still hoping around the tree this morning, so I assume the babies are still alive.  Perhaps they are in for a long tortuous demise.

Or the chemicals will cause them to mutate into angry bloodthirsty birds. Better watch your back.

Trouble is that beetle traps use pheromones to draw the beetles to the traps...which means it also draws every beetle within sensory range to your yard.  The best way to get rid of beetles is to convince the guy down the street to get a trap or two.

This is the state of the human race  today, I WANT bugs gone, don't care if I harm anything else that gets in the way.

i fear for your pets
