I miss John Madden. (1 Viewer)

I had gotten somewhat sick of him towards the end (and he was clearly on a rapid decline), but now I wish I had appreciated him more.

I miss Madden for sure; never got the hate for him, LOVED the guy. I think many confused his shtick for stupidity or age. Um, you don't win Superbowls or do what he did in business, get to where he got, by being stupid. Quite the opposite really.

It used to crack me up when you'd hear guys in a bar or wherever lambaste him for saying the obvious and stuff. Uh, hello, that was his job. He was supposed to make watching the game fun for the average or fringe fan; not the avid fan. The network/NFL already has those fans by the balls, and we're not going anywhere. Of course they loved Madden, he made them boatloads of money.

Madden was great at making light of it all and quite frankly, I'd much rather hear him go on about a turkey leg, then someone that takes it all too seriously. Like the beloved Jawz (at least in these parts) for example... I feel like I'm in an NFLQB 101 class every time he talks. It's enlightening for a game maybe, not every game and all the time. Give me a break, relax. I'd rather be entertained and laugh a little which is what Madden was shooting for. In the end, it's just a game, it shouldn't be that serious.

:(

 :goodposting: :goodposting: Thank you. Never appreciated him until the last few years....

Madden is a fantastic story teller. Often times when someone got him on the radio, it was time to sit back and enjoy. I loved it.

I remember one time he was on Mike and the Mad Dog and they were saying something like the odd thing about Madden is after all his work in the NFL and all his time on TV, he's the best in radio there is. He's a throwback to the times before TV when people sat around the radio etc. I believe that to be true and I just so enjoyed it that I wish I could find some on the web and just save them.

The way he takes you back and ....maybe some of his interviews should be in the HOF to hear the history of the NFL and not just see jersey's and highlights and...

As an announcer, I think Madden had a good way of speaking in terms that young people and savvy football fans could both enjoy. Announcers get in a spot all the time where they don't know what to say and he was kinda goofy when he got there. That was fun when he was younger, but I think as time went by it happened more often and thus people eventually soured on him.

He, and countless winning coaches, believed in the trenches. I appreciated that with every newspaper discussing the QBs and ignoring the trenches but for a sidenote. There isn't enough announcers pointing out the trenches and aside from being an integral part to building a team, it brought up good discussion. Madden did that. If I watched a game he announced, me and my buddies were debating something. More often than not, now I feel like we're criticizing announcers or teams when with Madden it was a genuine discussion.

Agree w/ the pro-Madden sentiment. Listening to him was very comfortable, even if it wasn't enlightening. He was like a grandfather who had all these great stories and loved telling them. Madden & Summerall were an outstanding duo.

Nobody was better in their prime than Madden, yeah in the end he was not as good as he was, but Summerall - Madden one of the best teams ever.

He definitely wore out his welcome. He was great at first but he did a good job of running his shtick into the ground for 10 years+.

Can't say I miss him...at all.

Couldn't agree more with the prevailing sentiment in this thread. As an announcer Theismann is an abomination. Last night I would have shed tears of joy if someone showed me the clip of LT snapping his leg. He really got on Thigpen to the point that it seemed personal. I think the dude must have some serious issues. It probably drives him nuts to know that nobody really remembers him as being a top tier QB (which he kind of was {super bowl MVP}). He'll always have a place in NFL lore, it's hard to imagine that his commentary is more gruesome than the snapping of those two bones and the cry of anquish as his career ended in an instant. But it is.

I meant also to say that I loved John Madden. His style of propping players up and bringing some joviality to the broadcast stands in stark contrast to Theismann's style of relentlessly tearing players down in a way that comes across less as critique and more like attack.

I think that Madden was great! I would love to hear him announcing again. I fear though that the burden of travel finally caught up with him.In general I would also say though that the NFL Network product stinks compared to the standard network television presentation of a football game. The announcers stink ... The cameramen and producers stink ... They regularly get lost on the play showing places on the field where the ball isn't ...

Loved Madden. He made the game fun! A rarity now. He was also a stand up guy and loyal friend. There was a point where the network wanted to get rid of Pat Summerall. Madden was at the top of his game at the time. He threatened to leave if they didn't offer Summerall a contract. If you were his friend, he had your back.

I miss him, too. Always loved him, never got sick of his shtick.

And I, too, can't stand Collinsworth. The guy is knowledgeable and I used to really like him on "Inside the NFL", but I just don't like him as a game commentator. Much, in the same way, I suppose, that I liked Kornheiser on PTI but HATED him on MNF--although, to be fair, no one will ever be as bad as Kornheiser was. He was unbearable. Now I can't stand either one of them, in any context.

As a long time Raider fan, I miss Madden the coach and announcer. Madden was part of that mystique that drew me to the Raiders. He was fat, sloppy, with hair all a mess acting like a wild man on the sidelines.

Madden the announcer was solid. He got a little too cozy with a handfull of players (Farve) but tried to make sure that linemen got some recognition. These days, too many announcers just focus on the QB all game. He got goofy at the end or his shtick got old.
