I need to be entertained within a few hours of Torrington CT (1 Viewer)

Flying into Newark, then driving to Torrington for as wedding. I'll have 4-5 days after that to do something fun. I'm too tired to deal with NYC and Boston. Thinking about heading to Vermont and terrorizing wikkid's sleepy burg.

This will be early Sept after Labor Day

Check out the Berkshires.  Great Barrington, MA is a great historic downtown with some options for food, drink, boutiques, culture (as if ). Probably about 50 min, certainly under an hour.  You have Lenox (few more min up the road, similar but smaller scale)... Tanglewood music festival is running, and that whole area has a vibrant arts scene. Summer stock shows are often quite good.  If you want to know more, Ive gone up a few times and my parents have a vacation house up there so can give you advice, if Tanglewood possible get better tickets (they are season ticket holders and donate)

Oh, and you can visit Otis, too.  This Town, also in Mass.

I lived in the Berkshires for a year long ago. Good suggestion but want to try something new.

I have a cousin in upstate NY that invited me to come salmon fishing sometime. Is Sept 8 too early? I don't mind driving. I'm from Texas. But preferably cap it at 4-5 hours

I love the Berkshires, that's a good call.

Foxwoods might be on the edge of your driving range. A few hours, at least.

A lot of the area is lousy with wineries, if that's your thing.

Um... catch a UCONN women's game? You could also probably hit the basketball hall of fame on the way to Vermont...

No kids? Kids would like the Dinosaur State Park and maybe Mark Twain's house.
no kids, but I still like dinosaurs and Mark Twain.

I'm from the T-Town area. Born and raised half an hour from there. Burlington, VT is a good idea if you don't want to do NY or Boston. Not much to do in Hartford, frankly, which is what T-Town is closest to. New Haven has good eats and Yale, but little else outside of Church St. even though I particularly like the area. It also can be rough sledding.

I went to Berkshire. Great Barrington isn't that nice, though I don't want to step on Koya's toes here.

But yeah, all the locations here are half an hour or so from where I grew up and went to school and I'd cast my vote for either Northampton, MA, which is the home of Smith college, and has a good nightlife, or Burlington, VT.

Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun are only 1.5 hours away.

That said, if It were me I’d make sure I got to Sally’s Apizza in New Haven. Based on the map, it’s 50ish miles away, but anytime I’m back home in CT, I try to get there. Best pizza in the world IMHO and I’ve had pizza all over the US and on three continents. New Haven’s got some decent bars as well.

Yeah, Pepe's and Sally's are great. Worth the trip from Torrington, IMHO. Pepe's is now a CT chain, believe it or not. I haven't had either in so long, though, that I can't quite remember how good they really were when I was gaining that twenty or thirty that comes with living in Wooster Square. Also don't forget Louis' Lunch, which may still be open.

New Haven's bars are okay. Richter's closed. The others weren't so much worth the trip from Hartford, so I'm not aware of the new nightlife scene there. It's a food-friendly city, though, that's for sure.

If Burlington is in the cards, the “IPA Highway” in that area would be a fun trip — Alchemist, Lawson’s, and many others that you could hit.

I haven't lived in CT in a long time, so I have no clue about the current nightlife. It was never amazing, just good enough to grab some drinks after eating a tasty pizza. I think I had Sally's last year, but don't get their often. I liked Pepe's but always preferred Sally's. My dad's known some of the family for years so we always got reservations and pre-ordered so we never waited. Always nicer that way.

A lot of love for the Berkshire’s in here, the place is a dump imo . My D goes to school out there and I travel 5-6 times a year out there. Run down places that had its heyday in the 50s with a bunch of ham & eggers still living there

Stupid yankee candles and $200 a pop for a Peterman wooden bowl every stinking time I go there with the wife.

Tanglewood is great for the beautiful people crowd although I’m going Friday to see Roger Daltry &’BSO perform Tommy

Mohegan Sun & Foxwoods are great if you are into side boob , and lets be honest who isn’t

I'm guessing they're more commercialized now, but while not IPA specialties we had great experiences at Magic Hat 15ish years ago. Love that town.

Foam Brewers is where it’s at in Burlington and very underrated on the way up in White River Junction is River Roost

We ARE talking options close to Torrington, ya?

I've heard the Laurel Players do a great version of The Petrified Forest. April is stunning in the Bette Davis role.

If you are going to new haven for pizza go to Modern. Best pizza in town alothough Pepe’s is really close. Sally’s is very overrated.

  I have always loved Sally’s, it’s my favorite pizza and I’ve had lots of pizza. Had pizza in Milan, Paris and heck even Johannesburg (not the pizza capital). That said, I almost always had reservations so I’ve never had to wait in line and usually knew the servers so never had any issues that you see in their reviews. I haven’t been there since it was sold so I have no clue if anything has changed. It’d be a shame if it has. I still remember the 50th anniversary shirt I got that Gary Trudeau did the artwork for, but that shirt died a long time ago.

4-5 days to kill after needing to be in Connecticut. No interest in NYC or Boston.

Might I suggest just flying home?

If you extend your radius by 5 miles, you hit Montreal (seriously, if you are looking for an overnight with a hotel, it's probably a 4.5 hour ride from Torrington and Montreal absolutely kicks ###.  While yes, the Berkshires can be a bit stoggy and stale at times - even if they are probably the best option within an hour or so of Torrington, imo - if anyone wants to argue Montreal, we can dismiss them as foolish and/or insane)

Some of the Vermont towns (Burlington?) could be an option too for something artsy, crunchy and a ton of nature opportunities.

I'm doing the area with kids, so your goals may be different than mine.  That said, some possibilities (no links since I'm on my phone) that are all within an hour:

Hartford Yard Goats - AA minor league baseball

Clarke Outdoors - River rafting and kayaking

Bridgeport Adventure Park - Outdoor ropes course and ziplines in the trees

Montreal is 306 miles.....
good point. only been there once for an Astros Expos game. I really liked it.

I think too far, now that an itinerary is shaping up.

Wed-Fri Vermont - Burlington first night, north Thur, drive back to Torr Friday

Fri -Sun - wedding

Sun-Mon - Train to Fenway Sunday for Astros game. If day game train back to Torr, if night game, spend night in Boston (which hotel? don't want to bring car)

Mon - Wed - TBD, probably the Berkshires

Check out the Omni Parker House.  A little dated but reasonably priced, good central location for Boston sights and easy T or cab to and from the game, and an *outstanding* whiskey bar.  Will not be influenced by parents scooping up rooms near Fenway to visit kids at Boston University.

From CT, if Saratoga still running I would spend a day watching and gambling on the horses...
Saratoga is the best horse racing experience I've had in my entire stupid life.  I will never retire and all dreams have been crushed by the weight of a hundred children, but I once fantasized about setting up shot in Saratoga in the late summers to hit the track every day it was open.  Wonderful place.  Heaven.

Looks like 325-400 for a Sunday night. Seems high?

Looking at hotels within walking distance, I see

Commonwealth 240

Inn at Longwood  Med 216

Verb 280

Buckminster 290

Gryphon House 280

Thoughts? Will a train from Torr get me close to these/Fenway?

Haven't stayed at any of them but the Buckminster is close and a landmark itself.  Commonwealth is relatively new and probably nice and very close.  I'd take it over the Gryphon House every time.  Verb will be hipster swanky, could be for you but I dunno.  Photos on Google are prolly representative.  Inn at Longwood is furthest out of these, still walkable but it's smack-dab in the middle of the Hospitals and much less vacation-y, imo.

Train from CT will get you to South Station in Boston and then a uber from there to hotels should run you $20 or so.  T would cost a couple bucks and one train change (Red Line from South Station to Park Street; D Train of Green Line from Park Street to Kenmore).  The T.

Torrington is a tough spot geographically.  Tucked away in farm land and Torrington is noted for big pockets of white trash and heroin use.  I would recommend the Berkshires too.  Great Barrington, Otis, Lee.  I think you could find some good spots there and would enjoy it rather than travelling into Hartford which is a commuter ghost town after 5 pm and on weekends.

Buckminister is very dated, but if you don't care about anything but a comfortable bed you can't beat that location.  It fit our needs perfectly.  The extra few bucks was worth not having to deal with the T or an uber pre or post game.  We were able to do so much more because we were already there.
