I still say his numbers are completely weird. He's putting up better slugging this year, but the lack of extra base hits is puzzling.

Ichiro is one of the best hitters in baseball, and he's proven by his batting average and hits each season. If he keeps going and going then he'll end up in the hall of fame.

Something that I'm looking forward to is Derek Jeter breaking Pete Rose's record, he can do it if he stays healthy and plays in his 40's.

Jeter has 2713 hits at 35 years old. Rose had 4256 hits. That's a difference of 1543. Rose got 1494 hits from age 36 on and played until he was 45. Jeter has already made $180 million in his career and millions more in endorsements. I don't see him playing another 10 years, especially not at shortstop. IMO, he would have to want to keep playing pretty much just to break the hits record. And what happens when his contract is up, can you see him in another uniform than the Yankees? I'm not sure the Yanks will want to keep giving him $21+ million forever.

In 14+ major league seasons, Jeter has averaged 208 hits a year (Rose averaged 194 hits in his 24-year career). If Jeter plays nine more years, he needs to average 173 hits a season to set the mark. Can he do it? Absolutely. Jeter, 35, sees himself still playing shortstop at age 41 and, maybe, a DH at age 46.

From August 19th, if he stays healthy why do you think he can't do it?

More power to him if he can do it. But how many guys have gotten over 1500 hits past age 35? Rose needed 1500 games past age 35 to do it. How many players are productive hitters at 45?If he still wants $20+ million a year for 10 more years I don't think the Yankees will pay him that much. We also have no idea if his skill level will be good enough to play 10 more years.

I agree on the fact that 20 million dollars won't be worth it, as he won't be putting up the numbers he does now. Of course he won't be putting up the numbers he does now, but if he stays healthy and plays into his deep 40's then I think he has a very good chance.I've always liked Jeter and his style of playing, and he loves the game.

Rose was a BAD player at the end. He didnt care. All he cared about was the record. Can you really see Jeter something like this and staying on while he's bad?

I can't believe he's gonna get his 2000th hit this week. Seems like he just came into the league, guess I'm getting old.

Good point, but if Jeter plays good then of course he's going to keep playing. He can't be putting up the numbers that deep into his age anyway, so if he was doing it then it would be for stats.

could've gone down as one of the greatest singles hitters to play the game.
Great defense too, but not a run producer.
How many lead off men ARE great run producers? It's not generally a spot that will support 100+ rbi's. And he's been with the Mariners throughout some pretty awful offenses. Put him with the Yankees or BoSox, or even the Angels and I'm sure he'd drive in lots and lots more runs.

Run production isn't the same as RBI. Ichiro's lack of walks and XBH hurts him in any RC based stat. RC is an individual stat so the overall Mariner offense wouldn't penalize him, although Safeco does factor in. He'd hit a ton of doubles in Fenway. I don't have any numbers to back this up but my guess is that Safeco affects Ichiro less than most hitters. If you compare Ichiro with Rickey Henderson the Gold Standard for lead off men, Ichiro's best years would merely be pretty good in the context of Rickey's career.

I'm on record in this thread as supporting his HoF credentials, although I base a lot of this on soft factors such as mystique and impact on the game in Asia rather than black ink statistics.
