thank you. this - the brain science (which has also made clear that even sight & hearing are not 100% clear but mostly reactions to projections by the cerebral cortex of what it expects to see & hear) plus a little herd dynamics is kinda what i've been hammering on about here @ FFA for a decade. Problem is, a person has to consume a flaming paragraph or two of wikkidspeak to digest the point. Here, it's cartoons! thx again -

BTW: 95% of human emotional problems cant be traced to animalistic reactions to "lost food" and "lost status" from our pre-verbal days crossing wires with our "new" mental functions.

They don't call it the 'reptilian brain' for nothing.  It's amazing that people think they are so free when they aren't really.  Most are slaves to the expression of the genes that were developed when they were in that 2-5-year-old window and their neural pathways.  All of which can be changed.

Glad to have some company on this point. But you'd be surprised how otherwise hip human beings dont like considering themselves as outgrowths of lower life forms any more than those for whom the opposite is part of their religious beliefs.

I like to make the point that we have two entities inside us - a poop-throwing chimp and a supercomputer - and we let the ape make 99% of our decisions. Sense in that where?!

This is such a great point and you can tell by how little interest this thread is getting that so many people have trouble shining that light on themselves as the source of their own problems.  It's a tough nut to crack but I always thought that this should be taught in the very early years of school and reinforced throughout

In the end we all share the burden of being human and that is 99% of that battle

to paraphrase 1000 previous posts, a few hundred yrs from now we will laugh as heartily over the behavioral health of this time as we do now about the medical health of yesteryear.

we look for victories everywhere, settle for complicated abstracts of same from our tribes, teams & parties and deliver little but glorious excuses, when victory over oneself is the simplest, most powerful & rewarding win of all. to quote Rosie from The African Queen when her companion cited his nature as an excuse, "It is our natures, Mr. Allnut, that we are here to rise above",

The sense comes from the fact that the ape part makes decisions on what to do very fast and the computer part is very, very slow. In the wild, hesitation can often mean death. So we're wired to listen to the ape part first as that's the part that has let us survive through the ages. Only in recent times, relatively speaking, has the computer part of us started making a big difference. And still it isn't always best to think every action through before making it. So the animal-brain retains its superior rank in ruling our reactions. And, really, that's not going to ever change.

indeed. people think, because the brain is so good at thought & imagining that that is its function, when its job is the same as that of every organism - survival.

the function isn't going to change, but the hierarchy eventually will. not that hard to train oneself to let command function pass thru one before acting. in many ways, it's as simple as the "count to 10" our mothers taught us.

Great post.  I agree completely.  I think we are already there, you just have to put the effort in
