IDP Rookie needs drafting help, please? (1 Viewer)

Hi,I am in the middle of a new Dynasty League draft and although I have been relatively sucessful in a dozen or so leagues over the past three years, I have never played in a league that used IDPs until now.We are coming up on round 6, and I have three picks in that round(due to trades) and want to grab at least one IDP since I will not get another pick after these for another 18 picks and am worried that all the top LBs will be gone by then.So... first, how many of these 3 picks should I use for starting IDPs?We start 1QB, 1RB, 1WR, 2Flex, 1TE, 1K and 3 IDPs(any position). I currently have open the 3 IDPs, 1Flex, TE, and K starting positions. Here are our scoring rules for the IDPs:Defensive ScoringSolo tackle = 1Sack = 2INT = 3Fumble Forced = 3Fumble Recovered = 3Blocked Kick = 3Touchdown = 650yds kick/punt return = 1Safety = 2Pass Defensed = 1After doing some research by mostly looking at 2005 season results and at player information and player data, here is my best guess(top 12) so far at how I should try to draft my IDPs:L. Briggs CHIM. Peterson JAXJ. Vilma NYJK. Bullock TENT. Spikes BUFR. Lewis BALW. Witherspoon CARA. Davis CLED. Williams ATLO. Thurman B. Urlacher CHI A. Pierce WASNow, for the questions:Should I include any DBs in my listing?Who did I forget and where would that guy sit in the list?Who should I pull from the list and why? Finally, how many IDPs would you grab with my next three 6th round picks?Thank you all very much for any and all advice and recommendations you can offer!!!Take Care, merc

In round 6, I'd spend all three picks on offensive players. Don't look at IDPs until you get your next picks after this batch IMO.I'd focus on LBs as much as possible.Look at the [DYNASTY] LB # top thread for a good idea of LB rankings - Briggs is way too high on your list, as is Witherspoon. Barnett, Tatupu, and Edwards should be on there. Maybe London Fletcher and Zach Thomas as well. Urlacher is too low.

Thanks Tick for the great Advice!!!My next three picks are at 6.6, 6.10 and 7.3 so if I wait until 8.10(my next pick after those) to grab a LB, I am worried that none of my top dozen will be left?Looking at the scoring done by the top LBs, they seem to give equal FF points to a 3rd RB/WR or a K... but also seem to have a sharp drop off after the top dozen LBs?Is that a correct interpretation of how IDPs stack up scoring wise to 3rd receivers and Kickers? If I pick only one LB in my next three picks... how would you list the top three LBs?Thanks for all your help and advice!PS - one reason why I left some of the IDP studs off the list is that it is a dynasty league and I tried to limit my choices to those with less than 10 years experience.

A couple of things jump out at me when I look at your scoring system. Number one: with a mere 2 points per sack, there shouldn't be a single defensive lineman drafted by any team in your league. Feel free to snicker when one gets picked. Number two: 1 point for every 50 return yards. That can add up. Number three: zero points for assisted tackles but 1 point for every pass defensed. This makes defensive backs VERY valuable in your league - especially those who return kicks. The advice Tick has been giving you has been sound...Ideally, you want a middle linebacker that piles up a huge number of solo tackles. Don't worry about the peripheral stats like sacks, ints, FF, FR, etc...the meat and potatoes of your scoring system is solo tackles. In your scoring system, Vilma racked up 152 points this season - 128 of them on solo tackles alone. But it's instructive to look at how some other players did in your scoring system:Lance Briggs: 113Mike Peterson: 134Donnie Edwards: 137Zach Thomas: 132 (in 14 games)Brian Urlacher: 125Will Witherspoon: 97 (!)Jason Taylor: 118 (by far the top lineman)Compare those numbers to these guys:Charles Tillman: 136Terrence McGee: 136Adrian Wilson: 130McGee and Tillman put up their numbers in 15 games. A kick-returning defensive back like McGee in particular is golden in your league, and he can probably be had FAR later than the big name LBs that your league-mates will fight over in the single-digit rounds. Pacman Jones would be another guy to consider with a late pick. And you can probably take a Channing Crowder or Barrett Ruud late as well. They might not deliver immediate dividends but down the road they should be tackling machines. Bottom line: no reason to reach for an IDP in your league.

Very good advice, do not overlook the return yardage. I did in one league this year and paid for it. I was loaded with top players in a normal scoring system - Vilma, Polomalu, Urlacher and Peppers, but this was just above average in ours. :bag: Late round picks = rookie speedy CBs who will return kicks.

Ideal value IMO will be a guy like Mike Peterson or Zach Thomas - maybe Ray Lewis if he drops, and 2 speedy DBs who return kicks.

DO not worry about IDPs too early, in most years the top scorers- especially DB's, turnover a lot.

Thank you all very much for your help.Just yesterday, the commish added .5 pts per assist... so the totals might change some, but probably not much. The return yards by DBs is an especially good catch as I was thinking about return yards with regard to WRs... but they seem to add alot more value to an IDP with a high tackle count. Thanks again for all the great help and advice!

my guess is that the offensive players avail at this point arent exactly NO BRAINERS...a player like VILMA is a no brainer and it will most likely start a small semi run....consistency is far to overlooked imo...of course not knowing who is avail and who is gone I would still most likely take TWO TOP LBS....they will give YOU the consistent points.....DBs especially corners tend to be very unpredicatable.... I GUARANTEE that alteast ONE DB from the Waiver Wire will end up in the top 10-15 this yr in your league....go back and look at last years 6th round picks how many panned out for teams how many were OK how many were CONSISTENT???GO IDP with 2 of those picks if say VILMA/BULLOCK are avail IMOand FWIW I won an IDP LEAGUE last yr that was published in a FF Mag...some of the picks and where i made themour starting requirements were:1qb, 2rb, 3wr, 1te, 1k, 1dt, 1de, 3lb, 1cb, 1s, 1flex(cb or s) Drafing 11th(12 teams)1.11 RMoss2.2 C Portis3.11 K Bullock4.2 D Edwards5.11 S Smith6.2 D Foster7.11 L Fletcher8.2 L Coles9.11 L Suggs  10.2 J Taylor 12.2 Michael Lewis13.11 R Coleman14.2 Clements15.11 LJ Smith20.2 Delhomme25.11 C Tillman26.2 James Hall27.11 M Ruckerthis was a REDRAFT done in MAY 05

Thanks Keg for the advice and help. Both Vilma and Bullock are gone as is Urlacher. The only other IDP taken so far was a DE.I think I'll take two LBs with my next two picks: 6.10 and 7.3.Out of the guys still left, who should I take?I was thinking maybe Barnett and M Peterson due to their performance and youth... since this is a dynasty league. Would you recommend someone else instead of those guys? Thanks again for the help!

i like peterson, barnett(not as consistent as i would like but still a top notch LB), Pierce, Thurman in no particular order....probably would go Peterson/Thurman(expect Vilma type numbers from this past yr)...but i really like Pierce a ton too

but i dont think you will go wrong with any of those 4 IMO

Thank you very much Keg...I'll go M. Peterson, Thurman, Pierce and Barnett in that order... depending on who is available for my picks. Thanks again!

Alright... Mike Peterson is now on my roster, but I have another pick in 4 turns. So far, here's who is gone:UrlacherVilmaUmenyiora - DEBullockMerrimanShould I still pick Thurman, Pierce or Barnett with my next pick or does someone else have a different suggestion?
