Jason Cole, former beat writer for the Dolphins and currently the top NFL writer for Yahoo says that the owner of the Dolphins (Ross) is egging his GM to put together an offer to get Manning.
"As for the Dolphins, the team has yet to express remote interest in free-agent quarterback Matt Flynn so far, even though Flynn just finished playing for new Miami head coach Joe Philbin. A team source said that’s because Ross has told general manager Jeff Ireland to put the full-court press on Manning."
Once Peyton Manning finds a new home it will change the chess board for the rest of the quarterbacks in the draft and free agency and then RG III will become the big news item.
Instead of indulging various arguemtns where Peyton should go I assume for the sake of disccusion that Miami will get Peyton because at the Manning/Irsay joint press conferene both emphasized "circumstances dicated the decision" for Manning and the Colts to part company. They took into account the mutual interests of both parties to make the decision.
It seems like the circumstances with the Dolphins (weather, owns home, cap space to sign Reggie Wayne/Jeff Saturday, solid defense, and studs already in place at OLT Jake Long, and #1 WR Brandon Marshall with playmaker in RB Reggie Bush) dictate that Peyton will wind up in Miami.
Assuming Peyton lands in Miami that move dictates where the other QB prospects, RG III, Tannehill, Flynn, and Weeden, will wind up.
Robert Griffin is the top name and the two primary teams mentioned trade up for him are Cleveland and Washington.
Mel Kiper thinks if Washington misses out on Manning they will out-bid the Browns to trade-up with St. Louis to get RG III.
Kiper think Skins will outbid Cleveland for RG III
I think the Browns would eventually wind up with Flynn and Seattle could come away with Tannehill. St. Louis would be sitting on a pile of draft picks and they may want to re-position themselves to move up into the top-four or possibly might put a package together to move up from the second round to catch a falling prospect later in the first round.
My best guess at this time is to match up these QBs, Peyton Manning, RG III, Ryan Tannehill, and Matt Flynn to these teams:
- Miami: Peyton Manning
- Washington: Robert Griffin III
- Cleveland: Matt Flynn
- Seattle: Ryan Tannehill
Assuming the above QBs and teams wind up together and that Blackmon just ran a sub 4.5 forty do the Rams move back up to assure getting Blackmon/Claiborne or do they re-think a trade with Washington even with the assumption that the Skins would offer more than the Browns with the caveat that they would have to give-up a high pick to move back into the top-four to land Blackmon/Claiborne?

I gotta agree with Mel so if Miami gets Peyton Manning I think the next match would be that Washington would sell the farm to get Griffin leaving Cleveland and Seattle, both WCO with the other two leading QBs on the table.Tannenhill is a reach as a top-ten draft pick IMHO and simply not worth a top-four selection. He would reasonably be in discussion with Seattle's #12 pick in the first round but not at the Browns #4 pick. Both would be interested in Flynn but Seattle probably would not over-pay if they felt comfortable sitting and waiting and taking the best available option.... ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. believes the Browns would need to outbid the Washington Redskins to move up to No. 2, especially if the Redskins, who have the No. 6 pick, don’t sign Peyton Manning.
“If they lose out on Peyton Manning, I think Washington will do whatever it takes to get RG3,” Kiper said Thursday during a conference call. “Does Cleveland want to go that extra mile? I don’t know. That’s only a question that can be answered by them.”
“I think if Washington sets their sights on RG3, they’ve had a history of throwing draft choices out the window. … Giving up draft choices is something that Washington’s comfortable doing, maybe more so than Cleveland is. I’d say outbidding the Redskins and [owner] Dan Snyder for a guy they want, it’s going to be very costly, very expensive and you’ve gotta be willing to give up an awful lot of draft picks. I don’t know if [the Browns] will be.”
