If the Eagles move up to draft Mariota, what team fits Foles? (1 Viewer)

I am wondering if the Eagles put this out there to try and get Foles to sign a cheaper contract before next season.

Let me play this out.

Foles has only one year left on his contract, so he would like a new one. However, he is looking probably for something in the 15+ million per year. Foles isn't going to sign a cheaper contract knowing that the Eagles system is so QB friendly that putting up good numbers and if healthy could command maybe even more then 15 million per year with a LARGE guarantee salary bonus. So Foles would probably be best to gamble on playing this year and see what type of contract he could get.

Eagles don't want to pay that kind of money to a QB that might not be a franchise QB. They would prefer to sign Foles to a more cap friendly number with a lower signing bonus and less guaranteed money.

So the Eagles put out that they are interested in Mariota and will do what is needed to get him.

This could force Foles' hand to sign a team friendly contract or gamble the chance the Eagles do get Mariota and leave Foles on the bench without trading him. Most expect the Eagles would trade Foles if they were to acquire Mariota. Why? do that unless you can get value. Foles probably has very little value at this point. So might as well keep him on the team as a backup or could start him for one year and still hold his rights by franchising him after the year to make sure a trade happens. Kelly has already said he believes you need two QBs.

My guess is you see Foles sign a contract sometime in March that is very team friendly, but still puts him in the line with starter money. If Foles calls the Eagles bluff then I expect the Eagles to heavily go after Mariota IF he falls out of the top 7.

Just my opinion.

Scenarios in order of likelihood

Eagles don't trade up and don't draft Mariota cause he's not on the board anymore

Eagles trade up less than 10 spots to draft Mariota

Eagles draft Mariota without moving

Eagles trade up to the top 3 to draft Mariota

Eagle fans, what would you offer to The Bucs IF you think Mariota is the answer?

Foles and a #1?

McCoy and a #1?

A #1 and a #2?

Just a #1?

Just Foles?

Just McCoy?

Report: Eagles plotting to move up to grab Marcus Mariotaby Larry Hartstein | CBSSports.com
Wed, 21 Jan 2015 9:43 AM ETThe Eagles will try to move up from their draft slot at No. 20 to snag quarterback Marcus Mariota and reunite him with coach Chip Kelly, who coached Mariota for his first two years at Oregon, reports The Star-Ledger.

The paper quoted a source familiar with the team's plans: "Can it happen? I don't know, but they're going to try."

Kelly recruited Mariota, once called him "the most talented kid I coached in college," and correctly predicted Mariota would win the Heisman when he saw him as a freshman, the paper noted.

Mariota could go as high as No. 1 overall and likely won't fall out of the top five, so Philly might have to give up as many as three first-round picks -- or a similarly rich package of picks and players -- to pull it off, per the paper. However, Kelly is now in control of personnel, answering only to owner Jeffrey Lurie.

"That makes it a little easier," the source told the paper. "There isn't anyone in Kelly's way."

Such a blockbuster move would show the Eagles are not committed to Nick Foles as their long-term starter. Foles was exceptional in 2013, throwing 27 touchdowns and two interceptions, before a so-so 2014 season that was cut short by a broken collarbone.
If this is actually coming from the front office, then it's not actually what they want to do. No NFL front office telegraphs their moves like this.

Bucs are taking Winston or someone else. Wouldn't surprise me to see Mariota drop into the teens.

I mean IF the Eagles are gunning for Mariotta they might be able to deal 20, 2016 #1 and Foles for pick #1. Maybe 20 52 and Foles gets it done.

TB needs a QB but I doubt they select one at #1 overall.

Lovie is still a defensive coach and hard to see him passing on a DL or OT

From #20 to #1?

No way. Not close. On principle, no team would drop down that far for so little.

I think that's too much- by a fair margin. I guess it's how you view the value of Foles.

Mariota likely slides right to the Eagles. Nobody is going to draft a QB in the top 20 to sit on the bench for a year.

Christian Ponder, Blaine Gabbert and Josh Freeman were taken in the top 20. Tim Tebow was taken 25th.

Suffice to say Marriota is more highly regarded than any of those guys ever were. He goes top 5.

Possible landing spots,

Tennessee may like Mettenberger & decide to go with a D-line.

Carr looked pretty good, and Oakland invested a high pick in him. Drafting a QB to backup him doesn't improve the team.

Redskins have RG3 who is the same thing.

Jets could buckle under pressure and take him.

Rams at 10 are a possibility

Cleveland could grab him if they aren't sold on Manziel, but more than likely they try and grab him at 19.

Houston at 16 is a likely target. They could be the team to trade in front of.

KC at 18 is a good match, so Eagles likely have to trade ahead of them.

IMO, Cleveland seems more likely to trade down from 12 and accumulate picks than take another mobile QB in the first.

Most likely candidate IMO IF Chip decides he wants to move up for MM (again, it's unlikely) would be Miami. If they decide to dump Wallace, they can address their needs later but need more picks to do so. Who knows what the teams actually will do and what players fall, but their key needs (corner, WR, and OL) have good prospects that should be available at 20 without much of a drop off in talent.

If MM falls past the Jets and Chip doesn't try to make a move, I'd take it as either he's happy with Foles or as an indictment against MM.

Miami? I don't see Philbin using his #1 on a guy that most analyst seem to agree needs a year to learn. He is on the hot seat and needs to win this year.

He said Miami is a trade down candidate for Chip, not that they would take Mariota.

I believe nothing this time of the year, It behooves Tennessee to drum up interest in that pick, maybe they take Mariota, Maybe the eagles have zero interest in him but to create demand for the picks inthe 2-5 range those teams start the 'Oh Philly is willing to move up" talk

Why would the Eagles move up? Because of Kelly's Oregon connect?

And even if they made that move they are ready now to win, why wouldn't they just keep Foles? Foles is in the last year of his deal and is relatively cheap.

I'm glad you believe everything you read.
I live here, and listen to two 24/7 talk radio stations, as well as read waaaay too much insider info my Iggles.

There is a 100% chance they try to move up and grab Mariota...only question is whether the price gets crazy high and they back off.

But please stop with the "don't believe everything you read" rhetoric.

There's your problem right there. Talk radio in Philly (which I listen to) is absolutely absurd. Most of it is purposely ruffling feathers to get more calls in and is hardly listenable

Just like Ricky Williams has been an Eagle his whole career right?

OK, the narrative during the part of the season where Sanchez was playing well was this;

Maybe CK's offense really doesnt require a "franchise" QB but basically just someone to be able to run the offense and not turn the ball over.

If this was the belief at some point, what now makes it not true?

Im not saying Sanchez>Foles/Mariota. Im saying if Sanchez and Foles can run this offense, well enough, then what is the point in giving up what you would have to give up to move into the top 10 or better? Youre not gonna get a good deal to move up. Even if CK wants MM that bad (which i still think is more BS than truth), everyone else will know too and will have the edge in making a deal. There is no scenario where they dont give up more than most deals, to move up in any incriment because of this.

Would it not make much more sense to try and improve their D which was laughable more often than not last year?

It's hard for me to believe that Foles can go from what he did 2 years ago to his current value. I think some teams are bound to go after Foles should they move up for Marcus Mariota, such as the Bills, Jets, maybe the Bengals, Houston, maybe the Titans, Bears if they are tiring of Cutler, Bucs, Cardinals, and Rams if they give up on Bradford.
If Philly has a chance to move up to get this kid they should do it asap...... He would be an excellent fit with Chip Kelly. That would be scary good combo..... Russell wilson/Pete carrolesque???

If the Eagles move up in the draft to nab Mariota, it will go down as one of the biggest blunders in NFL history, imo. Foles is legit. He had a down year last season, his 3rd year in the league, 2nd as a starter... but that's basically the status quo for all QBs, even the very good ones. IF the Eagles give up on Foles based on last year, that would be idiotic. Top 10 QBs don't grow on trees and I believe Foles has a high probability of sustaining top 10 stats for the next decade or so. Obviously time will decide, but I would be shocked if the Eagles pull the plug this early after seeing Foles dominate just a season earlier.

I agree. People on message boards overestimate the value of good college players. Some will be good and some won't. But to throw back 3 king's to go for a straight is idiotic and always will be.

You don't have 3 kings though, you have 3 cards that are face down. Those cards could be an ace (Fletcher Cox) or they can be a deuce (Marcus Smith) or they could be something in between maybe a 9 or 10 (Lane Johnson). So really, you are throwing away the possibility of 3 kings for the chance at a royal flush.

I think it would be a pretty fair deal, but I imagine the Bucs would want and demand more than that.

Knowing what we know, Foles would be the slam dunk #1 pick if he had 5 years of control and was entering this draft in 2015. I don't get why so many Eagles' fans and Chip Kelly seem to be so down on him? If the Bucs got him and then used those picks to surround him with talented players they'd be in pretty good shape.

The only way they trade the pick anyway is if they end up not liking either QB. I don't think they will, because I sense they're quite enamored with Jameis Winston.

I see Foles and whatever they'd give up in a trade as 3 Kings. Mariota as a royal flush i don't see.

As a Philly homer and fan I think they keep foles and draft Bennett from southern Louisiana who was chips QB at Oregon for 2 years before MM. Bigger arm and as mobile.

Did you watch Nick Foles this past season? He had a regression in his mechanics, seemed to not have any pocket awareness, has no mobility to extend plays and was extremely turnover prone. Not to mention he's now been in the league 3 seasons and has been injured in each one. The only thing I can say about Nick Foles is he's better than Mark Sanchez and even that isn't by a large margin. I'm not trading a boat-load of picks for Mariota, but if he falls and it isn't too costly I wouldn't be opposed to taking a shot.

I do not want to turn this into a discussion about Nick Foles, but I saw what he could do with dynamic weapons and protection. He's 14-4 as a starter the last two seasons. No QB will thrive if you take away his best option and then don't give him time. Mechanics regress. Bad decisions occur.

I guess Philly fans are just like Bucs' fans in that regard. The backup QB is always the most popular guy in town and they're always looking for the next one instead of realizing what they already have.

This is what Foles had to deal with before he got hurt:

Offensive guard Todd Herremans has an injured biceps, reportedly torn, and remains on the practice field with the intention of playing Sunday in Houston. What is the state of the offensive line? Lane Johnson's suspension and injuries to center Jason Kelce and left guard Evan Mathis challenged the Eagles at the line of scrimmage through seven games.
Despite that he won six games and his only two losses were on the road at the 49ers and Cardinals.

He was also 1 yard from beating the 49ers - two straight passing plays at the 1 against the 49ers, what kind of play calling is that?

He also had the lead against the Cardinals with 1:33 left when the Eagles gave up a 75 yard TD to John Brown. Even then he almost brought them back, getting to the AZ 16 before running out of time to get a 4th down play.

He's 14-4 as a starter the last two seasons. No QB will thrive if you take away his best option and then don't give him time. Mechanics regress. Bad decisions occur.
He's also had a different in QB coach in each of his first 3 seasons and '15 will make 4 in 4 years. Don't know how much that affects him. As an Eagles' fan, I really have no strong opinion on Foles/Mariota. I want them to win. As you point out, they are 14-4 with Foles. In his only playoff appearance, he left the field with the lead and the defense/ST blew it. I'm fine with Foles if they keep winning with him.

Conversely, I'm OK if they give up a ton of picks and players. As long as they win. If they start losing then in hindsight they'd be open to criticism regardless of who they choose as the QB. I had the same opinion with Reid/McNabb - win and I don't care what you do. Have a plan and show success. When that plan isn't working anymore, change what you're doing or move on. I don't even care who's in charge in the front office. Win or move on.

Despite that he won six games and his only two losses were on the road at the 49ers and Cardinals.
His victories were against Jacksonville (3-13), Indianapolis (11-5), Washington (4-12), St. Louis (6-10), New York Giants (6-10). Against Houston Foles left with the game tied 7-7. Color me impressed.

The offense made it past the 50 yard line once all game against San Fran. The fact that they were 1 yard away from winning is due to the defense and special teams, not Foles.

His numbers vs. Tom Brady the past 3 years:

During that same time frame Foles has only faced 4 teams that made the playoffs, going 2-2. One of those was Green Bay who was playing with their 3rd string QB. Just this season alone Brady beat 4 playoff teams. These numbers aren't really an apples to apples comparison.

Ignoring the Broncos and Chargers games he barely played in, I count 6 - Cardinals (L), Colts (W), Packers (W), Redskins (2x L), and Bengals (L) in 26 career games.

I think there's also a talent difference, especially on defense, between the two teams.
