I am going to make the craziest post of the thread but ... if I were an owner and not a GM right now I would have to go with Reggie Bush or Vince Young. These guys are going to be selling a lot of tickets/merchandise for a while.

O: 100% of GM's would take a franchise tackle or QB, give me Manning

D: Tougher call, DT or DE, give me Peppers

If you meant right NOW, at their current ages, I would want someone fairly young. LT is my personal favorite, but due to his mileage and age (which isn't exactly OLD, but as a RB, he has less shelf life), I wouldn't go with him. I, too, would probably go Manning. Defense I'd go Urlacher or Peppers. I wouldn't do a defensive back..

I would have to say Manning. Guy plays every game, has a good number of peak years left, causes no problems and is as consistent as it gets. He is as much a coach and stabalizing influence as he is a supreme talent.

People point to the playoffs - what if this guy had 1/2 the defense that the Bears or Ravens, true championship type defenses.

Defense, probably Merriman.

Take into consideration that 2 expansion teams started off with a left tackle (same one even) I'd go with that. Walter Jones. A franchise QB is nothing but a speed bump when he's layed out flat.

Left Tackle. Gotta have a great left tackle. Who is the best young left tackle in the game today?
Thats a tough call.Walter Jones is getting into his mid 30s, but is still considered the best.Guys like Pace, Ogden, and Thomas, who were once elite, are falling back towards mediocrity. The better young tackles in the game:Levi JonesMatt LepsisChris SamuelsBryant McKinnieJamaal BrownI certainly couldnt justify taking any Left Tackle, currently in the NFL at their current age, over Peyton Manning.

Offense - Best Tackle in the league (Jones, Pace, Ogden)

Defense - Julius Peppers
 This isnt 2002. Both are still above average, but not near dominant.
:ptts: I feel pretty confident that Vince Young will win a Super Bowl at some point, and he's seven years younger than Manning. But it's just too risky to take anyone over Manning.

O: Manning

D: Polamalu

Somewhat SD Homer response, but I've watched darn near every down this year.

Off: LaDainian Tomlinson

Def: Shawne Merriman

LT is simply the best player in football right now. Period. The Texans are kicking themselves for passing on Bush or Young. How could you pass on him if you had 1.01 in the NFL? He'll put butts in the seats, sell jerseys, set records, win football games, throw TDs, and I'd bet he can kick some field goals too if needed.

Merriman is a monster. He misses four games and still leads the league in sacks. I don't know a more dominating defensive player. Urlacher, Champ Bailey, Peppers, Ray Lewis - they're outstanding, but Merriman is flat out scary to offenses.

Just throwing in my 2 cents for what's it's worth:

Offense - P.Manning - He's more that just the best QB in the league, he's basically another coach out there (and a good one)

Defense - Peppers - I think he's the most gifted athlete in the game, the man's a freak

Duce Staley. You need someone standing on the sidelines in sweats to pour Gatorade over you when you win big games -- Duce is pretty good at that.

D: Polamalu
Even with all the concussions? This guy's very promising career has a very realistic chance of being cut short due to all the head injuries. He's had six official concussions, but he's estimated to have had over ten.I think the guy is fantastic, but with his history of concussions, I'd look elsewhere on D if I am building an entire franchise around a guy.

I understand the argument for Polamalu, but LDEs like Peppers are impossible to find. Hes only going into his 6th season. No way I could pass on him. Polamalu would probably crack my top 5, but he'd certainly be behind Peppers and Bailey.

I like to run the ball, and prefer my RB to be versatile. As I've said for the last few years, LT is my offense.

Defense is tougher. On one hand, I want a dominant DT to help stop the run and put my MLB in a position to make tackles. So maybe Stroud or K.Williams. OTOH, Merriman is a beast and sack machine. I don't like roids, so not going to take him. Corners aren't as important now IMO, but a Safety who can do everything is key. Polomalu does it all. OR, I could go ahead and take a MLB who ties everything together, Urlacher. Peppers is awesome too, and a definte consideration. In the end, I probably take Kevin Williams.

O: LT

D: KWill

Probably not but I felt like throwing someone out there besides Bailey and Peppers.

On D, Peppers is the easy call, with Polamalu coming in 2nd.

On O, believe it or not, I'd go with Vince Young. The decisive factor here is the effect he has had on his teammates and his organization. The Titans have done a total 180 since he took over. The sky is truly the limit for VY because he's such a dedicated humble player.

How about Marcus McNeill, rookie left tackle for the Chargers. He's young and a physical specimen. There was some predraft concern about his technique and aggressiveness but it looks as if Marty has taught the man how to play. You could build your offense around him for a decade.

I read an article one time looking at all 32 left tackles in the NFL. An astounding number of them were 1st round draft picks(say 24), and none of the 32 at the time were drafted after the third round. I think that speaks highly to the importance of the position in the NFL today.

He would be a left tackle and he would be relatively young.
He is the player that the Titans should have drafted in round 2 -- Marcus McNeil.
McNeil looks like he's going to be a very good player (actually, he already is a very good player), but I don't think he's the top offensive player in this year's draft class, or even just on his own team, never mind the entire NFL. I'd take Reggie Bush over McNeil from the 2006 class, and I'd take both Tomlinson and Rivers ahead of McNeil from the Chargers.
