If you left your house unlocked (1 Viewer)

BNB the reason I will never forget your place was I was a total idiot. I threw Sahara's toy off the end of the pier and she brought it back to me..............never took in to account that she could not get back on the pier. I remember pulling her out of the water on full adrenalin on to pier when she panicked.

We're going on 10 years without locking our house since we moved in. We don't even own keys to the front door. Our neighbors were robbed a few years back. Old lady across street said the robbers pulled into our driveway but pulled back out when they saw the dogs barking in the bay window. Dogs rule.

There is always a white van involved.

From age 5-18 in the neighborhood I grew up, we never locked our house. Only if we went on vacation, which was rare. I never even had a key.

We were never robbed.

Moved in here in 2003. Went almost 12 years without ever locking the door one time. Started hearing about robberies in my area because the mailman/ups/fedex just leave packages in plain sight. So thieves would drive up and down the street looking for packages. They would pull in and grab them and check to see if they could easily get in the house if nobody was home. Now we lock it all the time since we do so much more online shopping with Prime.

I've lived here for almost two years and have yet to lock the doors. It was bizarre at first but my roommates never did so I just acquiesced. So two years at least.

This is in Orange County, CA. Never ever would have entertained the notion when I lived in Albuquerque.
Where? I'm in aliso and didn't lock my doors for 5 years or so. Once I got married the wife was uncomfortable with it, so we lock them now.

Left my garage door wide open (with golf clubs, $1500 carbon fiber mtn bike, etc in plain view)

For a weekend. Twice. No cars in driveway. Nothing taken.

During that weekend there were 3 break-in robberies with a mile.

Maybe they thought you were in there just waiting for them :boxing:

I was sitting in my living room last year at about 1am, and out of nowhere there was ridiculously loud knocking on my front door. It was a cop telling me that I left my garage door open, and there had been some break ins. I mean loud, like someone was dying in my front lawn and they needed a phone or something.

I told him "um, ok", and he proceeded to explain to me how i needed to close it now, like now, like RIGHT now, like there was a cat burglar just waiting for him to drive away so they could rush in there and take all my stuff.

He was very upset when I said I would get to it later. Lovely guy was just looking out for me.

Turns out the break-ins were like a mile away, I never got around to closing my garage, and all my stuff was still there when I noticed it the next day.

Now, in my town, if you leave something even remotely usable down by the trash, that #### is gone within the hour. Bowling ball, toilet, wood, bed frames, broken electronics...............gone, poof, outta here. Lotta trash pickers. Kids learn quick not to park their bikes at the end of driveways.

My buddy who lives in the south part of my town on about 15 acres caught a meth head in his barn stealing a chainsaw. That was fun

I just read a story on Reddit that there was a serial killer who only took victims from unlocked houses. He figured if the house was locked, the residents didn't want him there but an unlocked door was an invitation to enter.

My wife insists we lock our second story windows. Can you imagine burglars carting around a huge ladder from house to house checking to see if a window is unlocked?

Take this for what its worth, but I've read that when a burglar see's an unlocked front door or an open garage, they move onto the next house b/c they assume that means someone is home.

That would make sense I suppose. Was just kinda surprising. First time was my fault.. second time was the GF.

I thought we were just talking about burglars. You definitely want to lock your house when it comes to serial killers.
