If You Told Me The White Stripes Were About To Play Live I'm Not Sure I Could Contain Myself (1 Viewer)

Like you can mention Jack White's name in with Hendrix, Iggy Pop, SRV, Kurt Cobain and people get it. Not sure you can just casually throw Kurt Vile in there.

Who is the next guitar god after Jack? Or just true HOF level rock star? Has there been one since?

Nobody, and he redefined the whole expectation of it. You need to build your own guitar to hit his level.
Yeah, he really brought so much. Incredible skill, innovative and a weird balance between he's trying really hard and yet not trying either. He is building his own guitar but then he's also playing some really cheap guitars that most pros wouldn't even think to pick up. He's loud, messy but always in just the most perfect way. He's totally punk but somehow also musical theater.

Plus Kurt Vile is only kinda good.

Billy Strings is sick. Gary Clark Jr?
Clark is a good thought. He's a great guitar player for sure but he's coming up well short IMO.
Yea for sure. I think you are right that there just isn't someone right now on Jack's level. John Mayer does some sick stuff with the Dead, and some of his solo stuff is great, but he's not rocking enough

They were a blast live, so much energy and noise for 2 people

A distant second, but this is my next favorite two person rock band from back in the day.

Interesting category: 2 person rock band. Not too many options I would think.

Dead leaves and the dirty ground when I know you're not around
Shiny tops and soda pops when I hear your lips make a sound . . .

Soft hair and a velvet tongue I wanna give you what you give to me
And every breath that is in your lungs is a tiny little gift to me

Such great lyrics. And he's not on the precipice of contrived emo, either.

I can't start Odell Beckham tonight but need to. He's only got a 33% snap share from last week. Can't risk that, but I want to.

Back to the White Stripes!

The music industry has changed in the 2+ decades since the White Stripes came out. Electric guitars are used as much as props as instruments in Pop music these days, although that's hardly a new concept.

Because it’s not real.

The proof is in the live show. If a two man band is using background tracks for their live show they don’t count as a two person band.

Because it’s not real.

It's very real. The Japandroids and White Stripes go without backing tracks. So did the Black Keys.

DFA1979 did track some keys/sound effects on stage, but it was limited (I saw them live back in the day). This video is a good example of just two guys making the noise (though it does become three when Max joins in). I saw them in a jampacked venue and the energy was off the charts. Super cool. Also, I liked the fact that they were a drummer and bassist. 100% rhythm section.

Guess I'm in the minority but I can't stand 7 nation army. Jack White's voice there makes Geddy Lee sound like an opera singer. And with that I've never had a desire to listen to anything else from them.

That’s the only White Stripes song you’ve heard???

Big big regrets that I missed seeing them live.

I had the chance, after reading a very large puff piece in the Washington, D.C., City Paper, to see them at the Black Cat in early 2000. It was a small club about half a mile from where I worked that was very walkable at the time, and I missed the chance and will kick myself forever. Booo, young rockaction!

No, but it's the one everyone hears all the time. Honestly though I couldn't name any other song of theirs.

You. You shall be castigated for your musical taste and knowledge. Plebian!

I kid. Seriously. I was playing them for someone this morning and they said, "Is that a guy or a girl singing?"

Oh man that would have been a tremendous show. I saw them a couple times here at venues of varying sizes but I regret not seeing them way more times. I mean it was so easy for awhile- like a 20 min drive weekend after weekend. I wasn't quite the right type of cool though to be regular at those crowds. My going to college to be a teacher *** probably stuck out in that crowd. Detroit hipsters- especially in 1999/2000 are a different breed. Not the fake Brooklyn kind.

In the same boat. Sort of unique to have a cult following with an annoying single hit
