There used to be an Ilhan Omar thread. I've agreed with her twice in two days and thought I'd discuss.

Mods, if you're shutting down convo on this, please lock or delete - I'm not looking for another time out.

First, Omar proposes legislation to restrict no-knock warrants. LINK We've seen recent examples where no-knock warrants resulted in the deaths of innocent people who thought their home was being invaded.

Second, on the doxxing of supporters of the Canadian truckers protest:

Ilhan Omar@IlhanMN  "I fail to see why any journalist felt the need to report on a shop owner making such a insignificant donation rather than to get them harassed. It’s unconscionable and journalists need to do better. " LINK   Very pleasantly surprised by this.

I agree with her some of the time. I’m proud that someone of her background got elected to Congress. But I wish she wasn’t such a rabid anti-Zionist.

Broken clock and all that. But right is right.

No knock warrants at all hours of the night are not right. If you have evidenc on a person, you bring the warrant to them and serve it. You don't need to try to sneak attack them unless you're looking for a reason to kill someone.

I dunno.   I see both sides.  If you're trying to serve a warrant on a clear danger to society, cops, whatever, you need surprise.  Its one of the methods they use right?   Bash in, create a massively unsettling scene so the perp is confused and doesn't have time to react/weaponize etc.   I see it as a method to protect those serving.  I also see how it can go bad quickly.   I don't have a great answer here...I see how no knock warrants are an attempt to address this but I also can see how this puts law enforcement at greater risk.

Now with that being said....What defines a "knock"   Can they just rap on the door a couple times then immediately break it down? Does that satisfy the requirement?    Or are they required to essentially ring the doorbell and announce they are there to serve a warrant on a cop killer?

Depends how dangerous they really are. There are some cases where a fight is inevitable.  You go knocking on some doors you ate putting officers at risk.  No knock raids come with different risks, but I woukd think there are some circumstances where they might be the safer option.

Wow.  If she actually said this then I'm in total agreement as well.  Is she okay?  Is she on medication?  This seems to DIRECTLY against what "The Squad" stands for with their love of BIG GUBMINTTM and hatred of those that oppose it.

With how incompetent some of these police forces are, I'd rather they have to serve the warrant during the day and announce their presence. Breaking into the wrong person's home and they defend themselves as is their god given right to shoot back at intruders and we often have a dead innocent person with no repercussions for the officers involved.

It makes it harder for police than too bad. Do some police work to keep innocents safe.

In agreement as well.  Omar herself has been outed by journalist's for paying millions to her husbands company so there is no love lost there.

Not a fan (obviously), but I'll give her a lot of credit for these two stances.

The thing about no-knock warrants is the sort of criminal justice reform we might have been able to enact last year if it hadn't been for all the jerks who wanted to defund the police while doing the work of centering black (Black) bodies and reading the room or whatever the stupid liturgical talking points are today.  I think I will forever hold a certain level of seething hatred for the SJWs who undermined real CJ reform.  It's nice to see that either Omar was never one of those people, or she learned from their mistakes.  Either is welcome.

I'm surprised but glad that Omar opposes the social credit system that Trudeau is ham-fistedly trying to enact in Canada.  We should take steps to dismantle the infrastructure of this sort of thing here, now.  Don't wait around for Trump to come back.  Do it now.  Omar probably understands that she and her friends are just as likely to wind up as the victims of this system as I am.  This one should be bipartisan.

IK.   frankly I think this is a test run of how it will work.

It's absurd the government of Canada will get insurance companies to cancel policies.    And they are gonna do it.

‘How do you think it would end’: Ilhan Omar questions whether Muslims would receive same treatment after sharing video of Christians singing on plane

A viral video showing a group of passengers on a plane joining in a seemingly impromptu Christian sing-along captured the internet’s attention over the Easter weekend, leading one prominent lawmaker to wade into the Twitter flurry and allege that this group of people would have been treated differently if they were instead Muslims.

Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, a Democrat and one of a handful of Muslims in the US Congress, reshared the viral video on her personal Twitter account on Easter Sunday and posed the question about how her own family would be received if they too decided to begin a “prayer session” while flying 30,000 feet above the ground in a confined space with strangers.

“I think my family and I should have a prayer session next time I am on a plane,” the Minnesota lawmaker wrote on Sunday alongside the video.

“How do you think it will end?”

The video, which has now garnered more than 30 million views on the social media platform, shows a small portion of the plane’s passengers, some standing up in front of their seats, while others wade into the aisle, singing along to a spiritual Christian song while one of the group’s members leads the chant by strumming an acoustic guitar in the centre of the plane.

Have you ever served a warrant?  You should give it a try for a living.  It's about as dangerous a job as you can get.  Especially, when you are serving it on an individual who is armed and dangerous.  Some people who are looking at 20+ years in jail don't go quietly.

I agree with her on this.   I don't want that on an airplane.    That's not the place to prostilatize.

It is about who is on the plane and their comfort level and not ours sitting on the ground.  I would not care for the singing myself.

Just wondering, would you feel comfortable with a group chanting  "Allah Akbur" on a flight?

I would not, but I wouldn't feel comfortable with any religious shenanigans on the plane.  There is a time and place for that and it's NOT on a plane.

I think that is similar to the point that Omar was making.

I agree, I don`t want to hear anyone or group signing on a plane.  I might be OK if someone like Bruce Springsteen offered to play a couple accoustic songs or Gladys Knight doing an acapella Midnight Train to Georgia but thats about it.

Omar is playing the "What if" game without knowing what the end result would be.

No she is pretty certain how this would be received. She was pointing out hypocrisy. If a group of Muslims started singing a song on a plane about the Quran in Arabic, how do you think that would end?

Kind of weird hypothetical but if it was English and sounded good, I personally don't envision a riot.

If it is a language that is unintelligible to the passengers and filled with shrieking, I think that would make people nervous lol.

Well it is not really hypocrisy as it is still the "what if game"   but recently bias does not help with 9-11 involving airplanes and other bombings involving muslims tend to make people uneasy if that did happen.

Finally something we all can agree on. Ilhan Omar bringing us all together. Who would have thunk :)
She didnt really say she didnt want to see Muslim songs sung on an airplane, she was more upset that she thought they wouldn't be as well received.

But I think we all do agree with what we think we're agreeing on...lol

Hey people traveling at 600mph in a steel casket 30,000 feet above the surface are a little edgy when it comes to unexpected behaviors, who'd a thunk it.

I get it. So bring the swat team if you have to. Sneaking someone in the middle of the night is just a recipe for innocent bystanders to get hurt or killed.

Fair enough.

Is this a good reason to endanger others?

Yes.  When a warrant is issued for someone wanted for murder I want that guy off the streets by any means necessary.  If you aide and abet that guy, you also deserve whatever comes your way.

The Supreme Court just ruled that public school teachers can pressure students to join in prayer at public school events but can also retaliate against those that don’t join in. Religious freedom is dead in America.

Between her, AOC and the rest of the squad it's not looking good for the future of the Democrat Party.  They just grow in ranks every year.

Ugh. Can't believe this woman got elected. While I agree that the SCOTUS decision in question is just another example of them completing the transformation from a Judicial body into a political one, please don't go down the road of pinning her words to the rest of us that share some lefty views. We don't agree with her, she's not speaking for us, and we wouldn't vote for her!

You wouldn't?

Maybe I'm missing something. Isn't she an elected representative? If Democrats aren't voting for her than who is?

Well, yeah - reality and common sense will absolutely treat these two events differently.  This relativism we see that one is automatically equal the other is disturbing.  Both recent events with terrorist attacks and the backdrop between the two religions allow for some pretty easy distinctions between them.  I have pulled out one basic, foundational controlling standard of behavior from each for comparison.

Matthew 39-40  But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well.

Surah 9:5  But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.

These are fundamentally different.  One is not like the other.

So we're going there, huh? Oooh, now you've done it. Could it be that there are textual, historical, and contextual problems when figuring out the terrorist likelihoods of certain religious utterances?

that pretty much how this entire forum works.

Stupid, ain't it?

One of the biggest stumbling blocks to conversation and compromise is associating the behavior of the fringe to the beliefs of the whole. It's how we demonize each other and convince ourselves of our own intellectual and moral superiority. It's so ridiculous, lazy, and disingenuous.

I hate replying to you, but I have to point out that even you aren't this obtuse, you're just engaging in the unhelpful behavior I described in my above post. You are here to mock and denigrate those you disagree with and bring almost zero substance to any thread or conversation.  Which is a shame, as you are no idiot and express yourself well. But you must enjoy being the way you are, so we will keep you on ignore.

Apologies to you all for quoting BR! Please forgive me!

To be clear, then, you are cool with folks assuming that Matt Gaetz, MTG, Lauren Bobert, et.al. speak for all Republicans and that you would for them?
