I'm going to Machu Picchu (1 Viewer)

Anyone been to Peru?

We're going to take 2 weeks next winter, take a train ride through Lake Titicaca, hike the Inca Trail, visit Machu Picchu...

It is our first stop of our plan to visit the new 7 wonders of the world (Machu Picchu, Great Wall, Petra, Christ the Redeemer, Colosseum, Taj Mahal, Chichen Itza). Hitting one up each year for the seven years.

Very excited.

:sadbanana:
Have you done these? We are now trying to start planning our next adventure and are open to ideas. Thanks!

Two of seven here. I'll have to google Chichen Itza.

That said, Christ the Redeemer is probably the worst reason you can find to visit Brazil (not to mention Rio)

ETA: What about Angkor Wat? Should definitely be on that list (I haven't gone there either, but still)

You would want to go to Machu Picchu when you can deal with the hiking and the high altitude. Do not wait until you're retired.

On the walk up to Dead Woman's Pass I met a 65 year old man and a 75 year old woman. They both made it.

Sure if they have been hiking and in good shape in general but this may not be true with everyone. For example, there were not too many older folks doing this hike in Huashan so it may be a good idea to plan ahead and visit certain places while we are younger. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbtZfzxX44o

That will for sure be one I do with the wife (and possibly kids). Mt Kilimanjaro is the one we are really looking at.

anyone ever use chlorophyl for altitude sickness? my wife suffers from it, and we wanted to give it a whirl
They use coca leaves there. None of us got altitude sickness. The other two guys I went with took altitude pills prior to the hike (I started but they gave me a massive headache). Our guide provided us with cocoa leaves and an unknown substance (he said it was quinoa) to help "activate" the cocoa leaves.

Lots of good info here.

My wife and I are in the beginning stages of planning a Machu Picchu trip. Like @the moops, visiting all the 7 new wonders is on my bucket list (Peru would be my 5th).
Have there been any new updates or any travelers that have been more recently? I would love to hear recommendations on how to plan this.

Can we easily do Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca in a week?

TIA

I have been to Peru and MP a few times, especially in the Cusco area, if I can help or answer questions.  It is my go-to site for my humanitarian vision expeditions I go on each year.  I can make a good recommendation for a tour guide/travel agency as well if you are wanting to hand it over to someone and let them do the work.

Not easily, but IIRC there is a train line from Cusco to Puno. It depends what you mean by 'do'. If you are walking the inca trail you will definitely be pressed for time. If you take the train to Aguas Calientes it's doable but you miss out on a spectacular hike. And the possibility to visit Cerveceria del Valle Sagrado that still make the beer in Peru, despite losing their original brewmaster recently. The replacement has picked up the mantle admirably I hear.

In Lima, Bar Barbarian in Calle Bonila off Parque Kennedy (Miraflores) has 23 taps of craft beer and is a very nice place (good burger too), A little down the road (Av Jose Larco), across from the city hall (Municipalida de Miraflores) is Nuevo Mundo draft bar, also a nice place (12 taps). My favorite watering hole is Brewpub Wicks at Av Pedro de Osma 210 in Barranco. Great cask ales (even if there are only two taps) brewed on site by William Wicks and super friendly staff and guests in general. Friday and Saturday night live (two man) band in the corner. Sundays during the season there is NFL showing (at least there was until I left)

I would be interested in this, planning a trip there with other in mar 18
