Important Week For Calvin Johnson Owners (1 Viewer)

For those of us who own wide receiver Calvin Johnson, this is an important week. If you owned him last year or kept close tabs on how he did, then you know that when Stafford was injured and the Lions had backup Qb's in there like C. Pepper and Stanton, Calvin's numbers and his overall play took a big time dip.

Last week, he ended up with minimal yardage and no Td's to show, basically a bust start compared to where you had to draft him to get him.

Now, we've all seen the play where he caught what we all thought was the game winning TD, which would have turned his overall stats into a decent day. Hill also targeted Johnson on several other passing plays where they just didn't connect or Johnson happened to slip.

I think Hill is a pretty decent QB. I went to the practice camps during the spring training and honestly, the days I was there I actually thought Hill was doing better than Stafford in the drills. So I am more optimistic than I was last year when Stafford went down with the shoulder injury, but I have to say owning him in 2 leagues last year and 3 leagues this year, this feels like Ground Hogs day because it really leaves us owners in a tough situation if Calvin ends up today with something like 5 catches for 56 yards and ZERO Td's.

Yes, he's got immense talent and one of the most gifted in the league, but that doesn't win me my fantasy football games. We need stats and today's game at home against the Eagles is an important one for Calvin Johnson owners. We need to see that life without Stafford for the next 4 to 6 weeks is going to be OK. We need to see a TD to Calvin, despite not having Stafford in there.

Calvin Johnson is in my lineup in all leagues but for those of us who also had him last year, we remember how frustrating it was to keep starting this guy and he'd get mediocre numbers due to the poor play around him and eventually Calvin getting down on himself and situation.

Very important week for Calvin Johnson owners.

I agree, it's an important week for us CJ owners. I'm not all that concerned though. I think as long as HE is healthy, he will get his. I don't think Hill is a great QB, but he is light years ahead of the scrubs that filled in for Stafford last year.

I disagree that this is an especially important week for Calvin owners. I certainly wouldn't overreact to a down performance.

he pretty much did all his damage last week with Hill throwing and should have had a long TD to go with at the end. Im not worried

The real question is (and I hope the answer is yes) if having Burleson, best, and schefler will take off the 2x/3x pressure that teams had to defend Calvin with Last year. I think it will. Plus Hill looks better than all the schleps we ran with last year...

I am more curious in the number of targets he receives. To be honest I don't expect a big game with CJ up against Asante Samuel in the Eagles secondary. I would expect the Eagles to be moving the safety over the top to shut down CJ as they are probably going to play him tough.

The Eagles secondary isn't the best in the league, but they are far from the worst.

And the Lions have a tough schedule this season. This isn't the only team that will give them fits. They play the Packers twice, they have the Vikings twice, they have the Cowboys.......there's all kinds of tough games down the road, so this is just one of many matchups that aren't great. Bottom line is he just has to be good enough to get his against tough competition even with Hill at QB, otherwise his fantasy stats will suffer.I'm not sure why some don't think this is an important week for Calvin owners, because this is the QB he's going to have throwing him the ball the next 4 to 6 weeks ( assuming he stays healthy himself). It's not just as simple as "oh he's great, he'll get his" because that wasn't the case last year. I'm not saying he will have a big day and not saying he won't, I'm saying with a new QB at the helm for awhile, how he didn't live up to his ADP last year due to what "could be" similar reasons already this year it would definately be alarming to me if he AGAIN this week has another subpar performance statistic wise. You have to keep in mind he didn't do much last week either, and keep in mind FBG had Calvin ranked as WR 2 overall in non ppr leagues before the season started. To me this is a big week, a sneak preview of what you get the next month or so out of Calvin. And I'll be honest, I watched every snap last week of the Lions game and Calvin in the 1st half was a ghost for the most part. If my memory serves me right, he had zero catches, and most of that was with Stafford. That's really not what I was expecting so we'll see what this week brings with Hill under center.

Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like Calvin's struggles are directly related to the poor O-line play, regardless of the QB. Sure would be nice to have Oher in there instead of Pettigrew.

Ditto!

Second year in a row with Calvin. Drafted him in the second round of redraft #21 overall behind AJ, Wayne, Fitzgerald, Moss, and Colston. Thought we were getting a gift :lmao: Remain hopeful. What makes it even more BIG is I am also a Detroit Lions fan for over 45 years. Drafted Stafford too - just drank the juice and picked up and will start VICK :)

We should know better though right......being a Lions fan and all we should be immune to any Kool Aid offered our way in regards to Lions optimism. You are right though, remain hopeful. I'm hoping the Hill we saw at the end of the Lions game is the guy we see this week, and not the guy who couldn't move the ball in the 3rd quarter. With a week's practice as the starter, I'm going into this with a positive outlook but if it's halftime and I see zero catches again.....

Poor O-line play directly or indirectly effects everyone on the team. If the QB has no time to throw, then yes he can't get down field in time for the QB to get off a good pass. There are a lot of reasons Calvin's numbers weren't that high last year compared to the previous year (they didn't have a good o-line that year though either) but none of them can't be any more important than having crummy backup QB's and a 1st year QB who did make a lot of poor decisions under pressure. The bottom line is the defense knows he's the Lions best offensive player, so they play him like that. Can the Lions with a backup now get him the ball? They have a lot of tough games coming up, this one today will give us a clue on whether we can depend on Calvin to be a guy we can count on for some big games like we drafted him to do.If he gets 64 yards and no Td's, am I going to drop him? Of course not but you're going to start asking yourself questions about who to start on your team, especially if you're in WR2 leagues because there are lots of guys who can get you 60 yard receiving out there.

Calvin was also unhealthy for several games last year with a knee injury. The year before last Calvin had several different QB's and did well. I'm not too concerned that Hill will be QBing. I think Stafford being out does keep the team from gaining chemistry and consistency, but Hill is not a bad backup to be in. Calvin isn't the only elite WR last week that had mediocre stats (examples: Andre Johson, Brandon Marshall, etc).

What the heck - Hill had a whole week to prepare :loco: I really think Calvin makes a bold statement today and scores at least one TD with authority!

Im not worried, he was targeted more when matthew stafford was out. when stafford was in he was spreading the ball more and focusing on the TE.

That's true about the other STUD's from last year, but C. Johnson didn't put up elite numbers last year. That's part of my whole point, this year is now really starting to remind of last year in terms of Calvin Johnson after that 60 yard performance (or whatever it was exactly) tied into last year's performance.I would not consider A. Johnson who put up monster numbers last season and still has Schaub throwing the ball in the same situation as Calvin who had a subpar year last year and again has backups throwing to him.
