In praise of Ben's game on 12/20/09 vs. Green Bay (1 Viewer)

By the way, the Game Log Dominator, much like the Data Dominator, is awesome.

Since 1995 (as far back as the Dominator goes), there have only been 4 500 yard passing days in the NFL in that span. 500 yards in a game is extremely rare.

Ben's 29/46, 503 yard, 3/0 day was the first 500 yard game since Drew Brees threw for 500 in 2006.

It was the only 500 yard game achieved on fewer than 50 attempts (Brees was next lowest with 52.)

It was the only 500 yard game achieved without throwing a pick (the other 3 QBs to have done it threw 9 INTs combined in those 3 games.)

It was the first 500 yard game achieved in a victory since Boomer Esiason did it in 1996 (Boomer threw 4 INTs in that game too)

Now, I've given you 2 of the other 3 QBs since '95 to have done it. Can you name the 4th (no cheating)?

Winner ! It was indeed Elvis Grbac, in 2000.

I don't believe Ben ever threw for 500 yards in a game. He's just a "game manager." He only wins because of his defense and running game.

Incidentally, I had box seats to a contest which meets your criteria (although it happened prior to 1995). Nearly a statistical facsimile of Big Ben's big day, this performance also featured less than 50 attempts, 3 TD's, 0 INT's. Name the quarterback responsible without cheating.

9 receivers over 70 yds that day. Has that ever happened in another game?

I would think it would be Fouts or Marino. I'm going to guess Marino.

Just looked it up and I'm wrong. I won't mention who it was in case anyone else wants to guess. It's not Marino, though - although he did throw for 500 in a game once. Fouts never did.

Nope, but here's hint for you Steeler fans out there:The team opposing what is arguably the greatest regular season QB performance of all time featured two Pittsburgh legends. HOF'er Mike Webster and the OP's avatar. That's right, Evilgrin himself...Bill Cowher.

Bernie Kosar ?

But since I'm here, I'm guessing the answer is Warren Moon. Cowher was DC in KC. Mike may still have been playing for them in '90 when Moon went ape crap that one game.

Well done. Warren Moon: 27/45 527 3/0 Clearly the gold standard of the modern era in terms of passing yards, Moon's accomplishment is notable for a number of reasons: 1. That season the Chiefs secondary featured two pro-bowlers at CB (Kevin Ross and Albert Lewis). Lewis was also a 1st team All-Pro2. Derrick Thomas was in his absolute prime and a 1st team all-pro (20 sacks).3. The 1990 Chiefs (led by DC Bill Cowher) were #1 in sacks, #1 in takeaways, #1 in T/O differential, #5 in points allowed, #4 in point differential.4. Moon did it on the road, in Arrowhead, in freezing weather.5. The stakes were high. Houston @ 7-6 was fighting for the last wildcard slot. Kansas City was tied with LA for the division lead (KC swept the season series). 6. Kansas City was in the midst of a seven game stretch in which they were 6-1 to close the season. Moon's Oilers were responsible for the lone blemish.
