I'm beaming w pride and i don't know her - that's sayin sum'n. Besides the musicality, to see someone that age be so smart & unafraid without being showy strikes right at my heart. I have notes, but.......just lovely. What you've all been waiting for. Sorry, @Shaft41, I'm just too tired and brain-dead to cut off the first 45 seconds where nothing is happening except your wife(?) apparently telling you how to shoot a video. By the way, please tell her that no further videos will be uploaded unless in landscape mode. What kind of actual monsters are you people?
Daughter sounds amaze-balls as always, though.![]()

I think I posted earlier in this thread, DA, that your upbringin' & home musta been interesting (good way) - I'm now more convinced than ever!DA RAIDERS said:also, i asked my mom for a story. she regaled me with one. i'll post it soon. timothy leary, nudity, hashish..the hills of san francisco...a rather famous companion...stay tuned. too tired to post it tonight.
Like it, pal...but - after I so graciously shared my brain damage wit ya, I was hopin' you'd be the lad yodelin' this ditty.
Holy hell yes! Thanks for that; had never watched it. Makes me miss John a lot, even though, due to my poor upbringing, he died before I even knew he existed. George looks super-cute in this video. I suspect if I'd been around during Beatlemania he's the one I'd have had the crush on.
IIRC, your Dad played with CJ&tF at this time...correct me if I am wrong.so....
san francisco, circa late spring, early summer 1967ish give or take 6 months.
my dad finishes up a set, at the one of bill graham's venues, "probably the avalon". what to do next? well, county joe and the fish and the other band to play there that night, are back stage and decide to "just head out into the streets of san fransisco, and go to any parties they could find" so the 8-12 of them smoked a rather generous amount hash, before setting out on their wandering journey. my mom remembers this story fondly, because it was just a bunch of kids, looking to have fun.
as they wandered the streets, cresting the famous hills of San Francisco, the other band's members, all had on long black coats. every time they would crest a hill, their jackets would billow up behind them. "making them look as if they were flying or were about to take flight." this visual, was big for my mom. she can remember their coats, whipping in the wind, as clear as if was yesterday. as they wandered, they found a few parties. they came and went. eventually, they stumbled upon a party, where the theme was nudity. nudity and acid. this is where they lost country joe. he decided to stay with tim (leary) and see "where the night would take him" they had to pry my dad out of there. but jerry, and the others, wanted something more chill. they found a party down the street, where the "memory starts to get a bit fuzzy.." but! my mom remembers that they had to go, pretty soon after they got there, "because your sister was with the babysitter"![]()
the other band was fronted by jerry garcia.
I love that song. Think it might get overlooked since there wasn't much new material on Yellow Submarine. I don't remember what I said about it since I don't read my write-ups either. Wherever I put it I probably should have had it higher. It rocks my face off.I miss this thread.
So, I'm no Beatles expert by any stretch. But I thought I was pretty well familiar with their work, and when Krista would post a song whose title I didn't instantly recognize, I would listen to it and realize I was familiar with it. But, since I was often reading her posts at work, I wasn't always able to play the songs right then and wouldn't do it when I got home. This morning, I came to a realization: "It's All Too Much" came on the Beatles Channel, and, the more I listened, the more I realized I'm not sure I've ever heard the song before. Like, ever. If I had, I've forgotten it. So, I had to go back and read Krista's writeup about it (more than likely for the first time, amirite) and I gotta say, I kind of dig the tune. It's like discovering gold in your own backyard, this unexpected gift!

I miss the thread, too. Sometimes it started to seem like a chore for me, and I wish I hadn't let that happen. Would like to do it all over again!![]()

Correct on all accounts. As far as I know.IIRC, your Dad played with CJ&tF at this time...correct me if I am wrong.
Anyways, I have a hunch, that I would'a stuck around with Joe and Tim...and honestly, I was at first surprised that Jerry & the Dead (Warlocks?) didn't wanna stick around too.
Then I thought back:
...if the records about this time are accurate, Jerry had already been connected with Kesey and the Pranksters for a while. If so, it makes more sense that they passed Leary by - since Kesey and Leary did not hit it off well earlier (on the east coast '64 - Further trip)...I think.
Please correct me if I have any of this wrong - cause it would not surprise me if your parents knew lots more about the truth, than what has been published.
Hell man - all this stuff is the crap I read about as a teen - this story is awesome - truly!
Thanks so much for sharing & thank your Mom as well.

Here’s an only somewhat tongue-in-cheek thought: after I had devoured the music that enthralled me in my teenage years (The Beatles and Billy Joel, not ashamed to say) I started hearing of other bands folks thought I would like. By college, the one that I kept hearing about but knew nothing about was Elvis Costello whom I had unfairly dismissed as a novelty act, what did I know. Anyway, I thought it would be cool to choose an artist like that, with a discography of at least a dozen albums, and buy them / listen to them in order and with the gap of real time with which they were released. I did not have the patience or the lifespan to do that with EC so I relaxed the time factor and eventually I just bought all of his albums in a flurry of desire. But the notion of re-discovering a band that’s been around for decades is oddly appealing to me. To document the exercise would be natural and well within your willpower, obviously, considering the Beatles feat.Would like to do it all over again!![]()

Sounds like fun to me! There are some inexplicable holes in my musical experience - The Who, for instance. Every time one of their songs comes on I have some version of the following conversation:Here’s an only somewhat tongue-in-cheek thought: after I had devoured the music that enthralled me in my teenage years (The Beatles and Billy Joel, not ashamed to say) I started hearing of other bands folks thought I would like. Should you be intrigued by this idea, I suggest a whole new thread “What band (who she is largely unfamiliar with) should K4 discover and document?” and we can run a poll. I’d offer three nominees, not sure if you are ignorant to their work so I’m speculating: Elvis Costello, XTC, or They Might Be Giants. I’m not going to explain those choices now but just thought I’d seed this idea.

Impressive. Very impressive. </Darth Vader voice>Elvis Costello is one of my favorites, and I know his catalog backward and forward, so he wouldn't be one. I've listened to a ton of XTC in my life and wore a couple of their records completely out so probably not them either.
ahem, there's only one person who can do that justice.....Binky The Doormat said:duh.
todd rundgren - 35 albums, not counting all the live albums and compilations - almost 50 years of goodness.
many styles, and very misunderstood.

Top 25, 50 and why i love them so by the world's funkiest clown. Hop on board the cartoon circus train - c'mon Binky now!
Brando may have been Stanley Kowalski and Vito Corleone but does that reeeeally top Tom Kenny being Binky AND Spongebob?
Love that version.krista4 said:My current Beatles-related obsession is this version of Yesterday. I'm almost convinced I like it better than the Help! version. It's jarring not to hear the strings, but I love the simplicity of this version. And I especially love when you can hear Paul smiling, around ~1:03-1:06. Charming. The geek in me likes hearing about the chords at the beginning, too.
Bonus version of Yesterday: first public performance. "Paul McCartney of Liverpool, opportunity knocks!"
@Shaft41, I have a question for you that might seem weird. I was going to ask it in PM or email, but i thought that might seem even weirder. I promise you'll find out why I'm asking, but not now. Anyway, question is, do you guys have other kids in addition to Shaftdaughter?

sure thing baby. Our Beatles thread appears to have spawned three new threads so far: tim's OHW thread, which in turn led to Anarchy's OHW thread, and shuke's 1000 songs thread. I feel like this thread is All in the Family! But with less racism and misogyny!
Well, I'm glad you didn't go in the other direction.sure thing baby.

Imo, Shaft - we got em - we just need to find em and list/organize em. (EDIT: Well we got creative - not sure about "ranking" only)I hope we eventually get enough of these types of threads where I can start my own thread ranking the ranking threads.
Since this thread, I have gone through a few other "creative" threads and was blown away by the content.I have a thread idea as well.
Not really ranking tho - curation really - of all the FBG Arts/Crafts/Skills/etc.
...so, I still have some things to work out on details.Still percolatin' but it won't be such a labor as the ones you mention.
No idea on time frame.
I'm trying to convince myself to do a thread similar to this one for the Stones, who have long been my favorite band. The problem is that they are not as beloved or as universal as the Beatles but their catalogue is much deeper (obviously due to longevity). I'd probably cap it as top 150 or 100 since in general people wouldn't care as much about the back of their catalogue as much as they would the Beatles. Our Beatles thread appears to have spawned three new threads so far: tim's OHW thread, which in turn led to Anarchy's OHW thread, and shuke's 1000 songs thread. I also don't want to flood the board with must list threads - although it would be a while until this came to fruition.
