In this thread I rank my favorite Beatles songs: 204-1. (6 Viewers)

There are a bunch I don't have in my top 50 ...especially the earlier stuff, that I mentioned earlier, I unfairly put aside.

The only two that hit me as being outclassed by the rest of the bunch are:

I've Got A Feeling

And Your Bird Can Sing

Two of my most favorite songs. Outclassed? I’ll take YOU to class.

...Monkey and The Ballad of John and Yoko were the two that seemed out of place to me before, but what’s left now looks similar to what I’d probably have left.

Penny Lane, Oh! Darling, and We Can Work It Out would definitely be in there though.

Not surprised on Monkey, as I'd mentioned it before as being a known outlier.  Surprised on John & Yoko; seems to be a favorite of some including #1 for Gr00vus.  So interesting to see all the various thoughts, though.

Out for dinner/drinking.  If you're in a place with TouchTunes, here are my recommendations for songs to jam up the jukebox so no one else's song gets played:

Beatles:  Hey Jude (~7:10), I Want You (She's So Heavy) (~7:45)

Other:  Television, Marquee Moon, ~10.5 minutes, plus has a nice fadeout that makes you think it's over

Neil Young, Cortez the Killer, ~7.5 minutes

Suicide, Frankie Teardrop, ~10.5 minutes consisting mostly of screaming alternating with silence

NOFX The Decline. Over 18mins. I couldn't believe I found it in one of those online jukes. Easy money. I've never looked for the live version of Little John Jewel, but if you're playing Marque Moon Little Johnny from The Blow Up live album at almost 15mins would hit the spot as well.

1.  If we wanted to hear 18 minutes of garbage we would just let other people play their music rather than pay actual money for NOFX.

3.  Yeah, I looked but TouchTunes doesn’t even have Adventure, let alone Blow Up.

4.  Also looked for really long Krautrock stuff and there was no Can, Amon Duul, or Neu!   Same for Glen Branca and Rhys Chatham compositions.   Ditto early Sonic Youth, Boredoms,  “Black Angel’s Death Song”, the first Earth record, Dopesmoker, This Heat, or anything with Pharoah Sanders or Sonny Sharrock.

5.  If “Endlessly Long Series of Bleats, Clangs, and Screams Designed Specifically To Generate Discomfort” were a genre, I would be it’s Harry Smith.

I’m kinda thinking people who don’t like the monkey song are just terrified of getting their faces rocked off.
I like the song but the nonsensical lyrics, the come ons and especially the crazy cowbell keep it from as good as it could be.   It's all subjective but in my opinion "Back in the USSR " rocks just as well and is a much better song.

Krista knocked the lyrics, too. Does it matter that these lyrics are referring to John and Yoko (it is not me who referred to Yoko using the term ‘monkey’, I am quoting what John claimed). It’s an odd ode to their relationship and, I think, a harsh dig at everyone else. Anyway, that’s my understanding of the story behind the lyrics. Seems placed about right, imo.

53.  You Won't See Me (Rubber Soul, 1965)

Beatles version:  Spotify  YouTube

Another song about the turmoil in Paul's relationship with Jane Asher; it's just one more perfect pop song from Paul.  And most importantly, another song where I can loudly sing the backing vocals.  At the time Paul wrote this at the Asher family residence where he was living, Jane was in a production of Great Expectations in Bristol, and the couple wasn't seeing each other often.  They'd started to grow apart anyway; Jane was mostly hanging with the theatre crowd and didn't do drugs, and Paul was, ummm, doing drugs.
This was written years before Paul they split (they were engaged in 67) and I could be wrong but I think the breakup was more about infidelity on Paul's part than drugs.

That's what John said so who am I to dispute it but to me the words had more to do about drugs.  "The deeper you go, the higher you fly...".

My problem with the song is more about the cowbell and all of the come-ons.   It's a good song but if I had to pick only 100 Beatles songs to listen to the rest of my life this wouldn't be one of them.

Yes on the first part, but it doesn’t negate the fact the relationship was in trouble and he wrote the song about it.  They hung on for a long time.

I think you’re right on the second part, regarding the eventual reason for breaking up.

Was just listening to this in my car last night. Incredible album.

And I fell

Q: Did you feel low?

Nah.

Q: Huh?

I fell right into the arms...of Venus de Milo

Btw, I don’t know anything about what Jane Asher was allegedly like as a person, but good lord was she stunning.
And younger sister of Peter Asher, who was one half of Peter & Gordon and a later famed producer/manager of James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, et. al.

Had a chance to buy some Beatles records yesterday.

Instead I went with Vinyl Me, Please's reissue of Clipse's Lord Willin', one of my favorite hip hop albums of all time. Then I doubled down and ordered T.I.'s King from the same company.

I hope I'm not banned from the thread.

eta* I didn't realize it, but my list was nuked worse than Binky's back in the first forty songs. Oof. I must have been inebriated when Krista was busy crossing them off of my list. I think my number one was like 170-something. And that waltz song I was talking about? Way, way back when. I think it's a good thing I'm doing Sober February because I've read every page in this thread and must have blacked out or something like that.

If you were really mean you would play this type of stuff a few extra times as you get ready to leave the restaurant. Maybe easier to do on an old fashioned jukebox?

I've always liked this song a lot. It's one of my favorites off of Rubber Soul.  I think Paul's vocals are great on it, and I like the harmonies, the melody, etc. Great tune.

Pretty sure I first learned from this tune that an "engaged" telephone line means it's "busy".

Probably my least favorite on the top 50 remaining is "Rain".  It just seems...messy.  There are others on there I'd never have in my top 50, but it's not like they're bad songs.

I'll admit it, I had "Monkey" in my top 25, and it would have never have been in there even a month ago.  I've never made a list of my favorite 25 Beatles songs before, so it's very much an exercise of in the moment, and it might be different another month from now.  But, I'm with Krista, that song grooves.  And weirdly, I'm the anti-K4 when it comes to cowbell, I don't have much use for it.  But the fireman's bell in "Monkey" makes the whole song.  It drives that percussion beat along.  And, to Godsbrother's point, I agree that "USSR" rocks as well.  Both are in my top 25.

Not a huge fan of the tune - still would be my second favorite "Monkey" song behind "Monkey Man", yet ahead of "(Theme From) The Monkees", "Shock The Monkey" and "Monkey Wrench".

Interesting.  I like this idea for others to weigh in:  what is the one (1) song that stands out to you as not belonging?
With a Little Help From My Friends. The reason the Cocker is my favorite Beatles cover is that it ain't much of a song. Strikes me as a Starkey set-aside in this bunch

btw, haven't both Revolutions already been eliminated? thought i did a song parody of the good one to harsh its axing

Awaiting this top 50 is like when your wife is getting induced into labor:  you're tingling with anticipation, and, although you're a little apprehensive about what things are going to look like when they come out, you know it's going to be all good.

Wake up to all this monkey business.  Which is why I won't be starting the composite countdown  now until krista has finished.

Am dying to want to mention the number of songs in krista final 50 that are in the composite final 50, but I will wait it out.

I'm not a big Beatles fan but am enjoying this thread. It's fun to read all the comments and even listen to some of the many songs I had never heard of.  The commentary is outstanding. Thanks K4 and the rest of the posters for putting this together.  It's been quite entertaining.

Had some bad news this morning that's taken the wind temporarily out of my Beatles write-up sails.  I'll be back to it later tonight or tomorrow.
