Incorporating special teams returns in scoring (1 Viewer)

Hey, new to the site, so sorry if I have picked the wrong forum. This seems like a broad enough topic to fit in the Shark Pool though.

I'm in a league that incorporates return yardage and TDs into the scoring system.

Just wanted some insight from anyone who is in a league that adds points for return yardage. Our system is 1 pt for every 40 yards and 6 for every td, so it seems like the effect would be minimal on a game-to-game basis but having never been in a league like this I don't really know how much to bump returners. I know guys like Hester and Ginn become more valuable but not sure to what extent.

We score 1 point for every ten yards of a return, plus 6 for the td in one league.

So how much a factor is Special teams when considering draft position?
Not a huge difference... defenses/ST still drafted late. It's hard to predict returns, but defenses like CHI get ranked a little higher due to Hester's return ability...

Oh...you mean you have team D/ST...Sorry I should have clarified, these stats are being added to the individual's point total. For example, if I took Hester, I would get credit for his receiving, rushing AND return statistics. Something I have not encoutered in a league up until now.

Ah... funny thing is I did play in a league like this once, huge impact on player rankings... everything a player did counted toward their points... was far too much info for me... not in that league anymore.

About 3 or 4 of the leagues I play in incorporate some version of yardage for kick off or punt returns. While it does matter some on a players like Welker or Burleson(move up say 5 to 10 spots), unless a player has exclusive duty to both or is extremely dynamic a player whose primary job is returning kicks will usually be a borderline starter or bye week replacement at best. also, return yardage is extremely inconsistent, so even those with good eyes for this stat rarely will regularly start even a Cribbs or Hester even when the season rankings might suggest otherwise.

It really depends on the number of yards/pt for rushing and receiving vs. returns. If equal, it makes top 5-10 receivers out of Cribbs, and Ginn. If rushing/receiving is 4x returns, then its a more mild bump (it would add 500 receiving yards to Cribbs, for example).

We do 1 pt per 10 yds for punt returns, and 1 pt per 25 yds for KR. It doesn't have a major impact on rankings except for a couple guys. PR yds are only worth a couple points per game normally, but that adds up. So do KR yds. But as coolnerd pointed out, there aren't too many guys that do ST in addition to normal WR duties. Maybe Welker, Ginn, Burleson. Hester wouldn't fall into that category yet because he doesn't catch enough balls. No need to adjust rankings much. Just look at depth charts, figure out which guys that are worth having on normal production alone also are first team special teams guys, and give them a little bump.

same here except its 1 pt for 20 on the KO return yardage. I don't really like it because people can find fill in rb's on crappy teams who don't really do anything but KO returns and get points for that. Doesn't really seem to affect the draft at all besides maybe a couple guys will go a little earlier (like you said).

The one exception I did forget was if you are in a deep IDP league, especially one that separates CBs from safeties, a corner who regualrly returns kicks is probably going to be a regular starter.
