Indefinite New England Patriots Thread (4 Viewers)

Patriots claimed RB Tyler Gaffney off waivers from the Panthers.
Was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 24th round of the 2012 draft and pursued a professional baseball career. Spent that summer with the Class-A State College Spikes in the New York-Penn League and hit .297 in 38 games. After the one-year hiatus from football, he returned in 2013 for his senior season and to complete his degree. He also was a starting running back for the first time. Amassed 330 rushes for 1,709 yards (5.2) and 21 TDs and 15 catches for 86 yards and a TD in 14 starts. Rushed a school-record 45 times vs. Oregon.
I saw this yesterday and was surprised since Gaffney's season is already done due to a knee injury.
Ridley, Vereen and Bolden are all free agents after this season...that is 75% of their backfield...this is probably a roll of the dice that he can potentially be a factor in 2015 should they need to restock this position...
yeah, that's exactly it -- they basically just got a free pick to stash for next year.

same as the ballard thing.

it could actually be noteworthy for dynasty guys -- I know this guy was a 6th, but benny had a decent run for them and he was undrafted.

lol this line

And the fact that Panthers General Manager Dave Gettleman was with the Giants during the Ballard claim makes it more egregious, that they lost a guy they drafted because they had to have Fozzy Whittaker the next three weeks.

Went to camp last Friday. I think it was just2nd practice so take it for what is worth...

Vereen good/very good

Edelman good/very good

Amendola not good. Just didn't seem to do anything well. I won't be drafting him unlessi start to hear great news.

There is some gigantic new tight end. 88 I think.

42 on defense made some nice plays.

Any news on Stephen Houston? I unfortunately (Wilson) have an extra bench spot now and see that he's available in one of my leagues but can't find anything about him. I know Waldman was pretty high on him, relatively speaking. With Vereen, Ridley and Bolden gone next year it could just be White and Houston. Have heard plenty about White, but nothing about Houston.

think he got 4 snaps, fumbled -- that was it

Tyms showed glimpses that he might be able to stretch the field in the NFL with his five-catch, 119-yard performance and 4.48-second 40-yard dash speed. If Tyms reminded fans of Moss, there’s good reason — the first-year pro is a disciple of the Rand, W.V., native. “Yeah, that’s my favorite player,” Tyms said Sunday at Gillette Stadium after training camp of Moss. “That’s kind of the reason I signed (with the San Francisco 49ers) out of college. That was my favorite player, I wanted to learn everything I could from him. He’s a really good guy. He taught me a lot as far as deep ball, and everything like that.” The 6-foot-3, 204-pound receiver spent nearly four months learning from Moss before the 49ers released Tyms, and he latched on with the Miami Dolphins before the 2012 season. Tyms has bounced around the league since his rookie season, but he’s opened some eyes with his performance this summer in New England. The Patriots have a crowded group of wide receivers, but Tyms could be afforded an extra four weeks of cushion to make the 53-man roster because of an unfortunate circumstance. Tyms will start the season with a four-game suspension after testing positive for Adderall, an ADHD medication for which Tyms had a prescription that he failed to clear with the NFL. Tyms doesn’t spend much time thinking about the four-game ban, because he’s too busy concentrating on what it will take to crack the Patriots’ 53-man roster. “Sometimes I think about it, sometimes I don’t,” Tyms said. “I don’t know if you guys feel the atmosphere coming out here, but any time we come out on the practice field, everybody’s serious. … I don’t really have time to sit back and worry about, ‘Ah, man. I’m missing the first four games.’ I can’t do that. Because the moment I do that is when, ‘Hey, Brian, sub in.’ And I’m in there with Tom (Brady) and Tom calls a play and I don’t know what I’m doing because I’m thinking about a suspension.” Tyms took a moment to appreciate being in the same huddle as Brady on Sunday early in practice. The wide receiver had a tough journey to the NFL, which included living in foster homes and sleeping in his car, and playing with Brady has been an eye-opening experience. “Today I did,” Tyms said when asked if he ever has to pinch himself about playing with Brady. “I mean at first, after walkthrough I was kind of like staring at him, like, ‘I’m actually in the huddle with Tom Brady.’ As a kid you’d play with him on video games, like ‘Oh, I got Tom Brady, you can’t stop me.’ I’m out here, I’m hearing Tom call the plays and I’m just kind of in awe. Like, man, this is Tom Brady, man. As a football player, as a professional, you’ve got to bottle that in and just play, because he expects you to know what you’re going to do, and to move at his tempo and to make plays.”Read more at: http://nesn.com/2014/08/patriots-brian-tyms-randy-moss-taught-me-how-to-catch-deep-ball/

personally, I think the te thing is a little overblown.

our offense probably tanked a bit without gronk last year, but that's probably more just a loss of talent on the field, and you just aren't going to have a gronk clone to back up gronk, like detroit doesn't have a spare calvin johnson.

I think people tend to conflate o'brien with mcdaniels, as they both coached the same team, but they're different guys and use different schemes.

I don't really think mcdaniels has ever relied too much on te, and would rather run 3 wide than the 2 te stuff o'brien liked.

but, of course it depends on personnel --- hernandez was split out as a wr a lot, so how do we define the positions?

You maybe right but I think the issue is that if Gronk can't play the position (as currently constructed) is virtually invisible...they don't need to bring Jimmy Graham in but they need a solid pass-catching TE that teams at least have to account for while he is on the field...right now they do not have that on their roster...

NE tight ends not named Gronkowski totaled 14-152-2 over the course of the season last year. I agree that the TE cupboard is barren without Gronk, but the team still was able to win pretty frequently even without him playing. That being said, the offense is nowhere near the same without him on the field.

yeah, it is what it is.

if gronk goes down I'd expect it to be basically tebc, and by that I mean half the team will fill in rather than just the guys listed at te.

so, obviously hooman gets some filler snaps, but they'd probably roll develin out their with 3 wide a bunch --- people outside new england probably never heard of him, but he actually got just 10 fewer snaps than ridley last year, and then you'll have maybe 10% 4 wide, and another 10% 6 OL w/solder the de facto ' TE ', etc.

they'll probably sign another te off the cutdown heap, but I wouldn't expect him to amount to much.

I think my biggest gripe with the te complainers is mostly that they underrate blocking while overrating pass catching --- the pats already have guys that can catch balls, I want a guy in there who can block, not some big goofy looking receiver.

edit: and speaking of o'brien earlier, notice one of the first moves the guy made after touching down in houston

The problem with this (and it has been an issue in other areas for them in the past) is it will catch up to them in the playoffs...with BB at the helm they will get away with it during the regular season but once you get to the playoffs things get tighter and defenses get better and this is an area that could get exposed...the issue with the Pats is almost never the regular season...it's during the playoffs...

I don't think anyone who has a passing knowledge of football underrates that area for a TE...yet it is 2014 and you can't have a TE unit (if Gronk were to go down) that is non-existent in the passing game...it makes things far too easy for defenses to gameplan for and come playoff time that could be a killer...if you are going to have Hooman as a backup it just makes sense to have another TE on the roster that teams have to at least respect in the passing game...

First team offense looking amazing on the first and second drive. Blackeye pick six from stand-in TE Maneri. But otherwise the Pats are moving the ball effortlessly.

Ridley is looking good, Vereen is looking great and White is struggling. Amendola, Thompkins and Edelman all looking great. Brady look good.

Devilin look good as a FB/TE

I almost fell over when I saw Brady throwing a block on that pick 6.

Nice effort, definitely needs to just walk off the field next time.

There are a lot of flags in this game

So has Garafalo (sp) moved ahead of Mallet on the depth chart or is Mallet hurt?

I don't think he literally has, despite the talk of Mallet possibly not even making the final roster. I think the Pats are just seeing what we have, because it looks like he is the real deal. He's really impressed me.

Thanks

Also what's the deal with Ridley? Is he out of the dog house and back to the #1 RB?

Hes moving the ball well, but he has a lot of competition for his job. I think we'll be seeing Vereen on every passing down and sporadically throughout, then a stable of backs lead by Ridley.

Of course as I say that Ridley puts the ball on the ground...

This Tyms kid might make the team, thats two weeks in a row with impressive catches.
He will be suspended for the first 4 games, and it sounds like that will actually help him stick with the team. I suspect they will try to stick him on the practice squad once his suspension is up. He will not take up a roster spot until then, as suspended players don't count toward the 53 man roster.

I was really getting into that game --- think I kind of forgot it was pre about when brady threw that pick.

brady and belichick didn't look like they were thinking about preseason

don't know if everybody stuck it out 'til the end, but if you didn't you missed some of the best play of the game, so I want to get it recorded here for honorable mention

eagles down a score with 6 min left

3-1-NE 5 (6:21) (No Huddle, Shotgun) 13-D.Johnson up the middle to NE 5 for no gain (68D-L.Tuipulotu). PENALTY on NE-98-M.Forston, Illegal Use of Hands, 3 yards, enforced at NE 5 - No Play.

it was tuipulotu that made that stop happen by pushing his man (udfa josh andrews) back off the line

1-2-NE 2 (6:07) (No Huddle, Shotgun) 13-D.Johnson right guard to NE 1 for 1 yard (42-T.Hawkins).

udfa lb james morris and darius fleming (2012 niners 5th rounder who missed each of the last 2 seasons due to torn ACLs) maintained good position and got some penetration to make the next play happen, although udfa cb travis hawkins was there as a backstop to fall on the ballcarrier

2-1-NE 1 (5:41) (No Huddle, Shotgun) 13-D.Johnson right guard to NE 1 for no gain (68D-L.Tuipulotu; 44-D.Fleming).

tuipulotu got good push on andrews again and shed him, enabling fleming to slice through the line for the stop

3-1-NE 1 (5:08) (No Huddle, Shotgun) 13-D.Johnson up the middle to NE 1 for no gain (68D-L.Tuipulotu; 44-D.Fleming).

this was a scrum with the pats line standing the eagles up, and tuipulotu shedding his guy to get penetration and make the play

4-1-NE 1 (4:43) (No Huddle, Shotgun) 13-D.Johnson up the middle to NE 1 for no gain (31D-S.Gary; 68D-L.Tuipulotu).

the final stop was tuipulotu holding the point of attack, allowing udfa safety shamiel gary to slice through the line and get to the ballcarrier for the stop

L.T. Tuipulotu received just one call after the NFL draft, from Green Bay.

He attended their rookie mini-camp and received positive reviews, but his agent, Aaron Gordon, says Tuipulotu was on "standby" for an undrafted free agent contract until a spot opened up.

The former Ute told The Tribune by phone Thursday night that he was starting to think about Plan B — as in, life after football.

He was back in Utah watching his young son, Tevita, on Wednesday when Gordon called "out of nowhere and told me to get ready to be on the plane in three hours."

The Patriots were interested in the 23-year-old defensive tackle. He flew in to Boston at midnight and then woke up at 5 a.m. for a private workout — similar to Pro Day but with more individual drills, he said.

He had planned to catch a 3 p.m. flight back, but he was delayed.

By a contract offer.
those guys kicked ### last night !!!

After not practicing all week, linebacker Jerod Mayo was not present; he did report to the facility in the morning, as all of the players did. Mayo was not at the building on Thursday. It is unclear why Mayo was not on the field this week, though it is not believed to be injury-related.

I recall recently hearing his absence has been to deal with something personal and has been excused.

Dobson participates in 11-on-11s: Second-year wide receiver Aaron Dobson, who has spent the offseason recovering from surgery for a stress fracture in his left foot, took part in 11-on-11 drills for the first time at training camp (one play we saw him collide with linebacker James Anderson). He also made a nice one-handed catch in a light drill against defensive backs and showed a strong effort on a sliding catch on a pass from quarterback Ryan Mallett.

gettin' the band back together !!

Butler keeps making plays: Cornerback Malcolm Butler has become one of the surprise stories at Patriots camp and he carried the momentum into Monday’s practice. In a drill with eight defenders, Butler matched up with tight end Rob Gronkowski on the outside. Gronkowski had separation to make the catch, but Butler closed in quickly to strip the ball from Gronkowski.

A few plays later in a different drill on a pass thrown by quarterback Tom Brady deep down the right sideline to Brian Tyms, Butler stuck with the bigger Tyms and showed impressive body control to turn in the air and haul in the interception.

Interesting that the lead story on sports talk tv last night was whether the Pats should make a play for Tony Gonzalez as their second TE. I find it intriguing that that was the lead, so it makes me wonder if the team have already talked to him (or continued to talk to him). This is clearly speculation and supposition, so no one should run out and grab Gonzalez thinking he will sign with the Pats tomorrow.

Watching the lack of urgency at backup TE I have felt they maybe sitting on a veteran for awhile although my guess was Keller who they brought in in the offseason...

I would think the strategy would be to scoop up someone that is a final cut on another team.

Possibly although in the past they have not been afraid to make a deal to get someone they like...they just did two of those type of deals for D-linemen a week or two ago...
