Indefinite New England Patriots Thread (3 Viewers)

We give Belichick a lot of grief in how he handles media but I really appreciate the candor yesterday when he outlined all the things they didn't do and how all those things together weren't enough to win a football game. The way he sheds off all the unimportant stuff and just puts it out there is nice to hear.

As bad as it hurt them in the standings for seeding, they probably needed this kind of game to remind them that as talented as they are when they have everyone playing, the little things can still undo your team.

Im not so sure about the "as talented as they are" angle when it comes to lafell and martin. In any case, worst special teamd effort by a pats team in over a decade.

Pretty horrible situational football by the Pats yesterday. The pooch kick up 14-0 seemed to wake up the Eagles. The decision to throw on 3rd down before the half when they were half heartedly trying to get into scoring position set up the blocked punt. Brady trying to force a ball creates a pick 6. Really bad.
That pooch kick was the height of arrogance - glad it came back to bite them

It was the second surprise onside in 12 games. Idk what he was thinking, I think pretty much everyone doesn't

I also think thinking about it is a waste of time.

What I'm really bummed about is that without Hightower on the field, they couldn't stop the run reliably. Without Slater gunning, they couldn't shut down returns.

And worst of all, they wasted that sick Dola to Brady play for a regular season game they lost.

What a mess that was. LaFell looks bad, Martin is not NFL caliber, bad play calling, stupid mistakes, bad coaching, the list goes on. And yes, some poor QB play. It's infuriating when they do a totally STUPID, ill-advised, arrogant decision to do a pooch kick- there is no good justification for it. I think at that point they assumed this was a w. Except for the 35 unanswered points!!! They play with no urgency, weak play calling, basically play to lose, not to win. The o-line looked poor again... A lot is definitely correctable, but the lack of good wr's is a huge issue. I was amazed that they got to within a TD with all the mistakes for points they gave up. Who's to say Edelman is even near his old self when he comes back, no one knows. Amendola looked spritely but had a couple big drops. White looked good but was only leaned on in desperation mode. There is next to no intermediate passing. Brady could've had 4-5 picks, his long ball is off, over and over. Weird game.

This.

Just a horrible effort on top of a mix of great plays and opportunistic/lucky plays by the Eagles.

Frustrating game to watch... Learn from it.

On to Houston.

It's been an unbelievable season, and I gotta say it looked like it might have had the coaches rattled a bit yesterday. Desperate to make something happen.

Definitely agree that they pulled that gadget play out too early.

Back to work. Watt coming.

hmm, you guys really think that pooch kick was that big of a deal. I love that about the Pats that they have the balls to do that. there was no real reason to be scared of the Eagles. a coaching mistake could have been punting before the half like that because i thought they could run the clock out.

I thought it was fine, it wasn't something that should have cost them the game and had they recovered the game probably would have been over.

It took a lot of things to swing the game back towards Philly. That punt block is inexcusable.

The pooch kick only looks bad because they followed things up with a blocked punt for a TD, a length of the field pick six, and a punt return TD. At the time, the pooch kick didn't look like a big deal. Oddly enough, the Pats had the ability to still play like a SB winning team after the pooch kick. Shocking revelation, I know. Not sure them playing like manure had anything to do with the pooch kick.

Is Edelman on any kind of IR? Or is he eligible to play (if healthy)
Not on IR. He jogged a bit and stretched but until there are reports of him running routes and doing agility moves in practice, he's still a few weeks (minimum) away from playing in a game.

Edelman has been out of his boot for close to a week now, still got a few weeks to go though.

I'm more concerned about Hightower and Gronk.

Gronk seems fine. Hightower's knee injury seemed worse than Gronks.

Anyone expecting Edelman to contribute this fantasy season are kidding themselves IMO. IF he sees the field before the playoffs it will be a few snaps week 17 to knock the rust off... IF that, IMO.

Gronk will hopefully sit one more week and get 100% then take the field next week. No sense in rushing back at the expense of the real season (post season).

In back to back days, 2 of the Patriots' top offensive players return to practice -- Rob Gronkowski & Julian Edelman
Edelman practicing is shocking.

Will be very curious what Gronk is...doubtful, questionable, or eventually out.
Questionable.

Considering Pats play tomorrow night, I wonder if they wait and see if one of the Broncos or Bengals lose tomorrow and base their decision off that. Not likely considering it's BB, but with a bye and home field advantage on the line you never know.

Just remembered that Denver and Cincinnati play each other, i think, week 16. So if the Pats can win out they will secure a first round bye. Denver and Cincinnati also both play Pittsburgh. Based on this I could see both of these teams losing one more game. But that's also not to say the Patriots are a lock to win out. Would like to see Gronk active and used in a limited role if needed based on how the game goes early, though i'm also not a doctor so that depends on his condition.

CIN and DEN losing today certainly helps , , ,
Went over to my friends at halftime of 4:00 games. Couldn't believe when I heard the raiders won. That is a huge help. Bengals and broncos still play eachother insuring at least one more loss for one of them. What a day.

bump this up. curious to see how bad these latest injuries are.....
This.... unreal.

It's shocking how much different this team is with our key offensive weapons healthy... throw Edelman back in the mix and I'm comfortable the two game dip is an anomaly, irrelevant in the post season. .

From what I've read, Easley has a thigh injury and was seen on the bike working out on the sideline. Mccourty's xrays came back negative, saying he has an ankle sprain.

No word on Blount

http://www.patspulpit.com/2015/12/14/10081968/injury-update-patriots-safety-devin-mccourtys-injury-appears-minor-easley-freeny-blount

New England Patriots free safety Devin McCourty injured his ankle against theHouston Texans, but initial reports are that he was withheld for precautionary reasons.

McCourty had his ankle rolled on by a Texans offensive player, and the Patriots safety limped around on another play before going to the sideline. The current belief is a fairly mild sprain to the ankle, and the Herald's Jeff Howe made it clear that it isdefinitelyan ankle injury and not an Achilles issue, which means that he shouldn't miss much time, if any at all.

ESPN's Mike Reiss was noted as hearing the injury "was nothing too too bad."

While it would be nice for the full defense to be on the field at any given week, it seems like McCourty should be okay and any injury shouldn't be lasting.

In other injury updates, linebacker Jonathan Freeny was seen with a cast after the game. Jerod Mayo took his role in the lineup and unsurprisingly outplayed him for yet another week. Hopefully Freeny won't miss any time, though, because he's an excellent special teams player.

Defensive tackle Dominique Easley drew attention for his injury, but he remained on the sideline and worked out on an exercise bike. It's very rare for a player to have a serious injury and to continue to remain on the field, so it's likely a minor issue that won't hold him out for much time. Since he was on a bike, it was likely trying to work out some tightness in his quad, which aligns will his leg giving out on the play.

Easley is clearly concerned about his knees and his reaction was extremely similar toRob Gronkowski against the Broncos- anything that might be scary gets magnified a trillion times due to the history.

Running back LeGarrette Blount did not return to the field after halftime after suffering a hip injury. This will be more important to monitor as the Patriots are dangerously thin at running back. We will provide updates as they are available.

Revised Superbowl Odds:
New England Patriots +400
Carolina Panthers +450
Arizona Cardinals +500
Seattle Seahawks +600
Pittsburgh Steelers +650
Denver Broncos +1000
Green Bay Packers +1000
Cincinnati Bengals +3000

Pats reclaim top spot with return of Gronk. Seahawks and Steelers climbing.... Broncos and Bengals sliding.

Reading speculation on Twitter of Hip Pointer for Blount... if so, very unlikely to miss time.
That's what I was hoping.

Nice losses to CIN and DEN. Sweet. Needed that. Might get a bye after all.
TEN/BUF/MIA down the stretch.. 1 game on DEN and IIRC 2 games on CIN for the bye. We should be in good shape for at least the BYE and I'd say better than 50/50 on HFA throughout (esp considering CIN visits DEN week 16).

We'll see. With both Ball and Trey Williams on the practice squad I anticipate one of them will be promoted if Blount is expected to miss time. Idk enough about Carter to speculate but I've been hearing the past few weeks the Lafell is on thin ice with the organization.

I saw that Blount was on crutches today. Simmons has been beeching about him lately, but I think he's done great at doing what they want. Pound them early and gash them late.

Blount on IR. Season over. Ouch.
FFS

Trey Williams and Montee Ball, I could see them promoting both at this point.

I love Easley, hes been huge improving the interior pass rush, despite being the best of the bunch its where they are the deepest in the front 7, so while it sucks its not that bad.

Losing Blount is huge though, down to James White who couldn't beat out anyone except for Brandon Bolden the special teamer that sometimes carries the ball - and Brandon Bolden.

LaFell is going to continue to get better each week. All they need is some RB depth, it's go time. They might be looking at guys like McCarron, Ozweiller, Fitzpatrick etc in the playoffs, bring it on. Let's see if Alex Smith and Roethlisburger can even make it...

Ben will make it, the Jets are going to fade.

Good piece from Dan Pompei on Malcom Butler's long strange trip.

Couple quotes:

"The bigger factor was just watching him play," Belichick said. "When we watched him play, immediately, you are like, this guy has some skill. He's explosive, he has a good short-area burst, he runs. After one practice, we said, 'We should sign this guy.'"
The day before final cuts, Belichick approached Strap.

"You have a place to stay?" Belichick said.

"No sir; I don't," Strap said. "I'm in the team hotel, and I don't know if I'm going to be around."

The coach's response: "Oh, you are going to be around."
