Pats PFF rankings through Week 6 (for players that have played enough to earn a rating):

P (out of 34): Barringer 3
K (out of 37): Slye 7

Pretty sad that your 2 highest ranked players are kickers and your next best just went on the Commissioner's Exempt List. Even if people don't think much of PPF and how they rate players, Pats fans should find those rankings appauling.

What is more appalling is no one one should be surprised…it was a bad roster before the injuries and now it is even worse.

Have a feeling they will beat JAX across the pond.

That team is a mess.

Really good spot for Maye after facing the HOU pressure.

Gibson higher than RS?
Collingworthless is drunk...

So Barmore gets pulled over in the early a.m. hours last night for his illegally tinted windows and temporary license plate not being visible due to having a tinted cover over it. Turns out his temporary registration had expired ... so no, you can not drive that car. It must be towed. He refuses to get out of the car.
Cops report that he was resistant and failing to cooperate. He tweets out something to the effect that he's experienced racism etc. by Providence police.
Who thinks cops don't give EVERYONE a hassle if they cover an expired temporary registration?
It's not a "black vs white" thing. It's a "don't do stupid s***" thing. How hard is it to register your car when you're not even playing, practicing, or traveling with the team? But now the cops are racist and he was mistreated. Shades of Tyreek Hill all over again.

Not a nice neighborhood to be in at 1:00am on a Wednesday morning...maybe he was leaving the swan boats at Roger Williams Park.

Bedard mentioned that NE had second thoughts about Mayo in training camp. He also said that absolutely Mayo is on the hot seat and that he is not assured of being back next year. Will depend on how things go over the final 10 games.

Any truth to the report that he may not make it past Sunday?

Bedard is not one to throw around BS...he is pretty meat and potatoes...if he is saying this there is a good chance something is there...and outside of Drake Maye I don't see how anything goes too well for the rest of the season with the state of this roster...if Mayo/Wolf is a mistake (and it is definitely leaning that way) then just rip-off the Band-Aid...if I had to guess if they hadn't promised Mayo the position then Vrabel would have gotten the job once he became available...gotta believe his name will be in the mix if Mayo does get canned but hopefully they open up the search in a big way and strongly consider some good offensive minds to grow with Maye.

I suppose anything is possible, but I would be surprised if they bailed this early. That being said, I am not hearing much good about how things are going. There are rumors that some players went out for a night on the town in London on Saturday and were not really in game shape against the Jags. I think the one word that describes the Patriots right now is rudderless.

After talking up Mayo all offseason and knowing this would not be a good football team, I have a hard time believing anyone is gone unless there is something catastrophic going on in the locker room.

That said, if we could get a Ben Johnson in here, great.

Eliot Wolf has to go too. This draft looks like a disaster apart from Drake Maye, who was an obvious pick at that spot. Wolf has played his part in the last few disastrous drafts too. The rebuild only works if there is something to build with.

Here is a thought exercise I saw on Twitter earlier and it was kind of tough. The task is to pretend like the NFL is having a league-wide draft from scratch and you could only protect five current players on the roster. Which are the five you'd protect? Maye and Christian Gonzalez were the first two that came to mind for me, then Christian Barmore, then Keion White, and I had to really think about the fifth one, settling on Mike Onwenu.

It's early, but the J. Polk and J. Baker picks are looking like disasters. Polk with hands like a brick wall and no separation and Baker not even seeing the field.

Time to start selling at the deadline, get some picks.

I think one of the positives to come out of this is that Maye's performance may actually attract top WR free agents now.

What's unfortunate this year is that as of now, it doesn't look like this year's draft class is going to have teams looking to scramble up the board for QBs. I guess that could change though (as it seems QBs rise no matter what the talent level as the draft approaches).

The thing with Wolf was he was around for some past drafts and the draft is the biggest reason they are in the shape they are in (outside of losing TB12)...he was a Scouting Consultant in 20 and 21 and Director of Scouting in 22 and 23...while there was no doubt BB was in charge the word was others were getting more say those last couple of drafts...and there is no doubt that Wolf was one of those "others"...so while some excuses could be made in those past drafts because of BB this year's draft is all him and there can be zero excuses...when you look at his full tenure with the Pats it is very underwhelming...right now there is no reason to have faith that he can dig them out of this hole.

Which are the five you'd protect?

That was a pretty good analysis from my view in the peanut gallery here. The sad thing is you have no WRs I’d protect. I just . . . wouldn’t bother.

Maye
Gonzalez
Barmore
White
Onwenu because you say so.

Rhamondre, Godchaux, Jonathan Jones, Uche? Not terrible players.

Maybe Mapu? I don’t know. I’m a Jets fan, so I get a pass for not knowing every guy at every position.

Thanks for your feedback. I agree on not bothering with the WR’s, though I did give it some thought to protecting Pop Douglas just to have a young target for Maye in this scenario. But as I see it, quality offensive linemen are at a premium and Onwenu is an above-average NFL starter, whether he’s at RG or RT. I love Stevenson but RB’s are the most interchangeable and have a short shelf life. He’s 26 and could be out of the league by the time he’s 30. Godchaux and Mapu I don’t know too much about. J.Jones and Uche are both rumored to be moved for picks so who knows. If there is any other player on defense I’d keep it’d probably be Marcus Jones since he’s a dynamic playmaker as a returner as well as defender.

No doubt. The thought definitely went through my mind. Shows how devalued RBs are, huh?

Godchaux and Mapu I don’t know too much about.

Godchaux is a DT and a little long in the tooth. Mapu is essentially a linebacker who is listed as a safety. Rangy sort of big guy.

Perfect way to end it. That means they do have value, but they wouldn’t be protected because you’re getting what you can get. Marcus Jones was my omitted thought, but if you can’t necessarily take full-time snaps, then really . . . you can’t be protected. Now, if they used him like Belichick did then you would consider it.

As far Pop goes, I just sold him in dynasty for chump change. I had to to get FAAB dollars, but I’m really torn whether I should have done that. I know I got too few dollars for him. My thing with Pop is he is freaking tiny and an accident waiting to happen. His helmet is so big on him he looks like he’s going to tip over. Just watching him play the past year and a half, I don’t see that positive a future for him, but I could be dead wrong. Have been before. I’ll be the first to eat crow if I am.

By the way, you guys have the chance to utterly ruin the Jets season this weekend. Just . . . can you imagine the internal fireworks if the Jets lose and go to 2-6 and tied for last with the Pats?

Somewhere, Belichick is salivating at that thought. Jets. Pats. Dead last and out of it.

THEY NEEDED ME

I think the single team expansion draft exercise really undersells the lack of talent on NE. IMO, a better way would be to rank all the players in the league from top to bottom and redraft the entire league . . . all 32 teams . . . with a limit of 53 players. Would they have any players in the Top 100? Top 200? If it's based by performance on the field and relative positional grades / ratings from this season, NE doesn't have anyone rated as a plus player this year. I think we would find that most league GMs would pass on most of the Patriots players, and a lot of the guys on the roster would not get picked up at all. Sure, they have a handful of players that teams would want, but most of the others would be third stringers or not picked at all.

Pop I think will be a fixture on this offense for years to come, but more as a complimentary player rather than a featured one. The fact that the front office drafted two WR’s and tried unsuccessfully to acquire Calvin Ridley and Brandon Aiyuk tells me they don’t see the long-term WR1 on the team currently, and neither should we. In dynasty I’m looking for more upside. I had Pop last year but let him go this past offseason because I needed space and because I don’t see a scenario where I’d feel comfortable starting him, especially since my league doesn’t score PPR.

Gonzalez? White? White’s been awesome for IDP. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s good, but for a DT it points to it.

I know the narrative in NE and the local media has Gonzalez as a future multi-time All Pro. However, PFF has him ranked as the #100 CB (out of 195 eligible) for this year so far. White would definitely be one of the more in demand players, as he is rated as the #7 edge defender. I had forgotten about him. Barmore would be another player that teams would covet (if healthy). Peppers was having a good season (but since went off the rails for off field issues).

If we redrafted the entire NFL, how many Patriots players would end up as starters in the newly configured league? Maye would probably end up as a starter with so few QBs to go around. Other than the players already mentioned, would there be many other players that would be starters? Dugger, Henry, and Onwenu have been rated as league average so far this season. Stevenson has been rated below average. The point being, it would not be a very long list.

Not a lot of banter in here on the Pats lately. Uche to the Chiefs for a 6th. NE will likely make a couple of moves at the deadline to accumulate late round picks. I'd be more a fan of that strategy if they could do a better job drafting.

For a 6th round pick, and two years down the line, will likely be a low 6th rounder. Traded him to the Chiefs of all teams. Fire this entire front office. I'm sick of them.

View from KC was they got him cheap. Surprised they couldn't get a 5th? Jeesh.

Gotta say, there's not much of a better feeling beating the Jets. Have a ton of NYC friends I went to Syracuse U with a while back. Oh has this been fun for 24 hours lol.

The misery that is being a Jets fan is not something we can grasp.

This sums up Uche:

@DougKyed

I'm personally not shocked by the compensation for Joshua Uche. He was available in two straight trade deadlines and signed a one-year, $3 million contract this offseason. I think he can be an effective rusher, but he largely hasn't been for four of five seasons in NE.

I don't see this W as the Patriots getting better or figuring things out.
That win was a gift from the Jets.
Missed XP, missed FG, botched 2 point attempt after a delay of game penalty.

The Jets screwed up plenty no doubt, but did anyone think Brissett was going to move it down the field and get a TD?

Think we've got to give them a little credit here.

Good chance NE can get their 3rd win today with Maye active. I honestly thought 3 wins would be an impossibility. If Gonzo can lock down Ridley and they can contain Pollard this is a very winnable game.

So trading the likes of KJ Osborne, T. Thornton, etc...what are we going to end up with 10 sixth round picks next year lol?

Hope they find a way to do some buying that shore up some positions are add some depth. Seems like it's a buyers market even for O lineman.

The good thing is because they have their QB-of-the-future you can still hope they win as opposed to worrying that a win kills your chance of getting your next QB via the draft...I think they should load up with as many picks as possible when it comes to dealing players that aren't part of the future...the more picks they have the more ability they will have to move around in the draft...no issues adding players as long as it is not a move that hinders any future moves.

Don't love that we lost the game (and WTF didn't we go for 2 anyways), but my god, this kid looks great.

I'm really just amazed at how well Maye maneuvers in the pocket. There's no sign of panic in there at all. Great sign for a rookie. Hell, veterans get happy feet all the time. I mean, on that last ridiculous TD pass to Stevenson, despite being all over the place for 12 seconds, I never got the sense he was losing his cool.

He's also not afraid to put the ball in places where his receivers can make plays. Unfortunately, they...can't. Lol.

And not to mention this guy can run...and run people over. Maye has to get this cleaned up and learn to slide or he's heading for trouble.

Really reminds me of a cross between Herbert and J. Allen.

Let's get this kid protection and ONE legit WR damnit. Do that first. The hell with the defense short term.

This kid looks great.
I must admit that Maye is a lot better than I expected he would be at this stage, especially given the total lack of talent NE has given him to work with. That being said, i have heightened concerns that the team may lack the ability to surround him with top tier talent. I don't love the coaching staff, the play calling, or the management team making draft picks and signing players. They will have the cap dollars and draft capital to make significant upgrades . . . I'm just fearful they will muck things up.

Pats will screw up Maye with crappy coaching and not surrounding him with talent. I’d wager that by the end of his rookie deal Maye will be in his 3rd HC and OC as I’m not buying the trajectory of this franchise right now.

Really reminds me of a cross between Herbert and J. Allen.

:lmao:

Seriously? A synthesis of two of the best quarterbacks in football? What is he, the Six Billion Dollar Man?
Let's just say I'm a bit excited about his future. Lol.
It’s also not as outlandish as our friend here would like you to believe considering Maye was getting Herbert and Allen comps by NFL coaches and media throughout the Draft process. Those are obviously best case scenarios and we’re far from that point but the physical tools are there for Maye and he’s looked objectively good relative to the situation he’s in.

It’s also not as outlandish as our friend here would like you to believe considering Maye was getting Herbert and Allen comps by NFL coaches and media throughout the Draft process.

Let’s see :ponder:

Run speed, toughness, and arm strength like Allen. Smarts, accuracy, mechanics and restraint like Herbert.

Ladies and gentlemen . . .

I give you cyborg.

Nah, he’s going to be good. I told a guy NOT to trade him away in a dynasty league that was going superflex. Maye is going to be good barring something unforeseen.

Mayo’s inexperience rears its ugly head. Why wasn’t Springer on top of this at the very least? You’d think if the head coach is too busy to worry about things like kicking into the wind, then the special teams coordinator would. One of those details Belichick never overlooked.

Amateur hour.

NE ranks 30th in points scored, 32nd in offensive yardage, 30th in first downs, 32nd in passing yards, 30th in passing TD, 31st in NY/A, 24th in rushing yards, 29th in scoring%, and 24th in time of possession. The defense ranks 21st in points allowed, 25th in yards allowed, 24th in first downs, 22nd in passing yards, 28th in NY/A, 26th in rushing yards, 28th in turnover%, and 30th in time of possession. It goes without saying that all parties involved should be considered "on notice."

I have heard both sides on the fate of the coaching staff. Some beat folks think everyone n the staff is coaching for their jobs and the rest of the season is a tryout to see if they will be asked back (but only if the team shows improvement). Others feel ownership knew this year would be a mess and a disappointment and that any of the coaches that want to come back will be back next year (and they aren't in any danger of being replaced).

Everyone knew this was going to be a bad season...no matter who was coaching the roster was depleted and there was no way any HC could overcome that...that being said you still wanted to see young players developing as well as a foundation being laid for future success...as of right now I don't see either of that happening...Mayo looks like he is in over-his-head and because he is surrounded by a weak staff I don't see him developing into a legit HC...unless we see major strides between now and the end-of-the-year I think it will probably be smart to move on from Mayo and Wolf...next offseason will dictate whether this team can get out of this dumpster fire and I have no confidence Mayo/Wolf should be making the decisions.
