Inground pools - worth it? (1 Viewer)

How elaborate are the retaining walls?  I had to build a retaining wall around mine and took it on myself to save money.  Thru the first winter (and a very wet spring)it held up great.  If you have the time to plan it out a lot of the landscaping can be done by you and save a huge chunk of money.  It's been a serious amount of work but I enjoy working outside.
I would, but with the layout of my yard and the location we would need to put the pol in, the retaining wall would run right up to the edge of my pool. Similar to this. My yard is fairly hilly and i have have to demo an existing 4ft tall stone wall to fit it in as it is.

I'd rather pay the pro to do it and ensure it won't be at the bottom of my pool in a few years.

I had a pool put in in 2011.  @16x32 kidney shaped gunite pool, deep end is 7 feet.  kids have enjoyed the #### out of it.  They'll have their friends over and its nice for family get togethers too.  Maintenance is minimal.  the only real downside is the $$.  If you have enough of that and kids that will use it all of the time, I can't recommend it enough.  before the pool, we had summers that were so hot, the kids didn't want to go outside.  now they are out there virtually every day of the summer.  and I like being able to grab a beer and float around for 30 minutes with some tunes playing on a hot summer day.

I will use the heater in May-June and again in Sep-Oct so I can get 6 months of use if the weather is decent.
if my wife would let me, we would put a pool in.  But we have a lake place, so it seems like a waste of money to her.   We have too many trees, too, but f it, I would still put one in.

In ground pools are like boats....better to have your best friend own one.
I have both - in fact I'm about to head out and change the oil in it for the summer. And on jetski as well. Then clean the leaves out of pool since the wind is blowing like a MFer.

Happy Memorial Day!

I would think that wall is part of the pool if it's a gunite/shotcrete pool. If it's a liner pool than yeah I'd pay a professional to do that.

agree, if you are pouring concrete, the amount of material to get this rebar in would be miniscule, and it would look better and last a lot longer.

I would get their advice whether you would want to plumb into the concrete or have it in the dirt.  I would suggest plumb into the dirt but there are +/- either way.  My pool is sort of like that and they did just enough of that stuff in the rebar and of course it popped a leak prior to me moving in.  I got money to fix it, but the whole job could have cost me 10 bucks at home depot and ended up being 650 bucks in demo and rework.

Worth it, no. Enjoyable at times, absolutely.

Value to the home is definitely location dependent. Agree with those that point out in Arizona it is a plus, but their specific climate/weather obviously has a lot to do with that.

Great for three months in NJ, kids love it. Have salt water, which is pretty easy to manage. Came with the house and as much fun as it is when we use it, I'd never throw that kind of money into something with that little return.

this is the spot where the pool will be going. We took the trees down last year (when this shot was taken). Plus I need to move the shed, demo and rebuild the wall and such.
You may have to put up a fence around the pool (insurance). Check the local ordinances as they may have special requirements, such as a fence with a self-closing gate/door. If you don't already have one, get an umbrella insurance policy.
