Initial Dynasty Draft (1 Viewer)

new-guru

Footballguy
I have been in Fantasy Football for six years but I am now taking on something new.

A DYNASTY TEAM

We will be drafting from scratch and will be able to keep as many players as we want next year and forever. We have a serpentine Dracft for 20 rds. Start 1 QB - 2RB - 3 WR - 1 TE - 1 FLex(rb,wr,te) a K and a DEF/ST

I am new at the Dynasty drafting style and am needing anyones expert opinions on how to go about a dynasty draft.

I think build around young RB's and let the rest fall into place. Maybe RB/RB/RB

thoughts? how much do you protect the future at the expense of the present?

I have been searching for Dynsty Mock or Real drafts for this year and have found none.

Found only a few rankings for Dynasty style draft.

My main concern is taking a young player way to early, Therefor to see a Real Dynasty Draft or Mock or a Dynasty Cheatsheet of sometype or rankings would be the Best HELP.

Very excited about starting a big money Dynasty League, but I am also worried about how crucial the INITiAL DRAFT will be.

Any insight would be Appreciated

Obvious answer here, but the younger players with upside go fast, very fast. There are lots and lots of veterans to be had late. Guys like Isaac Bruce, Eddie Kennison will be available very late.

It depends on if your building a team to win now, or win in a couple of years and be a "dynasty" to determine how you draft.

My advice, take the best player available, simple as that.

Welcome to Footballguys.

Since you are new to the message boards, I will assume you aren't a paid subscriber. I will say we have up to date dynasty rankings for paid subscribers, among a ton of other valuable content.

There are dynasty rankings available to non-subscribers, but they were last updated in mid July. They are different due to new updates from around the league, but they should give you an idea of how the staff members thinking is regarding dynasty leagues. There are also rookie rankings...same as above, last updated in mid July.

The non subscriber rankings are located here.

There are a lot of articles also. Any articles posted after Mid July require a subscription. However, if you go here, you can read all of the free content. Even better, scroll down to the articles from past years, and you can read them. That is all free, and there are a lot of great articles there that will help.

My dynasty philosophy is to build a solid core that will allow me to contend for many years. I don't make year 1 a priority. If I had to give an analogy, I would say I give year 2 a 50% weight in my rankings, year 1 25% and year 3 and beyond 25%. I just don't want a lot of older players drafted early because next thing you know, you have a few holes to fill. However, you can't ignore older players, but they don't have as much value in dynasty leagues. There is a point where they are just too good to not draft. It's a fine line and I can say you will learn as you go. I would not go too overboard on unproven young players either. A nice mix is probably best. But normally, my first 6-8 picks are players who are proven, but have at least 3 good years left. But like I said, if an older player falls to a point that you have to take him, then take him.

There are several different philosophies depending on who you talk to. You just have to learn through experience.

I suggest looking at the free rankings. Even though they are a month old, you will get an idea how the staff members think by looking at their rankings. Read some of the free articles.

There are also podcasts for free, and these message boards have a lot of good posts, and they are free as well.

Good luck and welcome to the wonderful world of dynasty leagues. They are a lot of fun and a great challenge.

If you really want to build for the future my advice would be the exact opposite....wait on RB and go WR and QB early.

Young top tier WR's and QB's are rare commodities in Dynasty leagues and both have extremely long lifespans.....RB's come and go in a heartbeat with new top guys and rookies every year.

Lock in your top tier young WR's and QB's early, reach a bit for top backup RB's you can get a little later....suck for the first couple of years while you make trades to upgrade your lineup, have high picks in the next couple of rookie drafts to get your new young stud RB's and there you go.

Have to have a long term outlook though....my approach when I did this was 3 years to be competitive.

Welcome to FBG.

As other have stated this site offers plenty of content for dynasty owners; as far as philosophy for drafting a dynasty team - I draft with a good mix of proven veterans and new talent. The key is to try not to project too far into the future anything over 3years often is a crap shoot. Try to get your core three players to build upon and most importantly donot forget the single thing that can keep you dynasty team on top for years to come is the WAIVER WIRE. Picking up players who are often not drafted during the Rookie draft is key (Marques Colston anyone).

Good luck with your draft.

Check out the pinned 2007 Dynasty Master Thread up at the top of the message board. There are all kinds of links inside that thread (including links to the prior years Master Threads) which you should find helpful. Links to initial drafts, rookie drafts, strategy, player evaluation, all kinds of things.

The football offseason is where you see most of the dynasty strategy type discussion on these boards. May is a busy month as that is when you will see most of the initial dynasty drafts and rookie drafts for existing leagues taking place (right after the NFL Draft.) This time of year we are caught up in redraft, preseason, regular season, playoffs, injuries, position battles, etc.

Good luck with dynasty. I started playing dynasty about 3 years ago and am addicted to it. I much prefer it to redraft these days.

My advice is NOT to get caught up in future prospects. Draft to win now. You can wheel and deal later to stay on top.

WOW!!! :( Thanks for all the info. I was wondering how people would respond since this was my first post. I have followed this forum for the last couple of years and sure appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks for the link! :(

Just a quick glance at your roster requirements tells me you should focus on WR's first since you start 3. Grab a couple studs while everyone is getting RB's.
