Interview w/ Jim Flynn - www.PewterReport.com (1 Viewer)

Sorry. Storming here and lost connection for a second. My bad. :bag:

How will the addition of a true fullback, Jared Sowell, help the run game? Do you think he will help in the run-blocking game, particularly goal line?

For those of you that don't already know, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed their first 2006 draft pick Wednesday, inking seventh-round selection, tight end Tim Massaquoi, to his rookie contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The Bucs are currently in negotiations with their remaining nine draft picks and plan to ink them to deals before the team reports to training camp on July 27. Sowell stands a good chance of taking playing time away from Mike Alstott. He’s a much better lead blocker than Alstott, and Sowell is well versed in the West Coast offense from his playing days in New York. Sowell should also make an impact on special teams. Alstott might still be the goal line ball carrier, but Sowell should get his fair share of playing time with the Bucs.

Jermaine Phillips has consistently been underperforming at strong safety since replacing John Lynch. He's been bowled over by the likes of Kevin Jones and Kevan Barlow for touchdowns, and has still yet to stay healthy for a full season. It seems, however, that due to the overall weakness at the position for the Bucs, that he is still starting, despite his poor performance. Do you see enough talent from one of the young guys to push or even replace him this season? Or will this continue to be an ongoing problem for an otherwise top defense?

You’re right. Phillips needs to stay healthy this season. He doesn’t carry a high cap value, but the Bucs are starting to get concerned with his lack of durability. He also hasn’t shown much playmaking ability – he’s recorded one career interception. But I don’t see Phillips losing his starting job since the Bucs lack depth at the safety position.

I know Chris Colmer struggled mightily last season -- is he going to make the team, or will be forced out in a numbers game? From my understanding, he was just completely lost. There's a lot of talent on the offensive line, I'm really looking forward to seeing how it shakes out.

I don’t see how Colmer can make the team. At this point, I can see why people are labeling him a bust. The injuries that plagued him in college and hindering his efforts in the NFL. To his credit, Colmer started coming on strong toward the end of last season, but he suffered a shoulder injury that required offseason surgery. He hasn’t practiced at all this offseason, and there’s a lot of competition at the tackle positions. That said, I don’t see Colmer making the team.

Last question Jim -

Anthony Becht seems to get bashed quite often, and by drafting two late-round tight ends it did not give me any reason to believe the Bucs are happy with him. With one of our newly drafted tight ends already hurt, it looks like we will need to depend on Becht again. What is the deal with the tight end behind Smith? How much of last year’s success in the run game can be contributed to Becht’s blocking skills?

Actually, it’s the exact opposite. The Bucs are thriiled with Becht. He played a key role in the running game last year, and he was asked to do a lot of things due to flaws along the offensive line, particularly the pass-protecting ability of the tackles. Becht has gained eight pounds of muscle but is much quicker thanks to his workouts this offseason. The Bucs expect Becht to play more of a role in the passing game this year, but his strong suit still is his run-blocking ability. The Bucs drafted two tight ends – T.J. Williams and Tim Massaquoi – because of their need to add depth behind Becht and Alex Smith. Williams likely is out for the year because he suffered a torn Achilles tendon during Tampa Bay’s mandatory mini-camp in late June. Smith will once again play a big role in the passing game – even bigger than 2005.

Thanks Jim! And thanks to all you Footballguys for submitting the questions. We'll do another one of these interviews soon.

If Clayton is expected to return to rookie form, and Galloway puts in another 70 catch 1,000 yard season like Flynn expects, then Simms needs a serious bump in rankings.

does anyone really expect 2 1,000 yards WR's in TB this year?

hadn't really thought about the addition of Sowell. He definitely is a better lead blocker than Alstott.

Sowell is going to be the starting FB this season. One problem Gruden has had in his Buc tenure has been Mike Alstott. His playing style really doesn't factor into his offense, so he's always had problems utilizing Alstott to his skillset.

This year Alstott will very likely be an almost non-factor. He's not a great blocker, Cadillac will get most, if not all, of the goal-line carries, and Alstott will really just be the backup/moral support. You'll probably see him split the backfield with Cadillac in a sort of hybrid-rocket formation that Gruden did last year with Pittman/Cadillac, but beyond that, Alstott isn't going to do much of anything.

If what he says about Alex Smith is true, shhhh... don't tell everybody.

Grab your TE late.
I would not count on him to be a "breakout" TE by any stretch of the imagination. Two very solid WRs on both sides of him with a run-oriented WCO that wants to spread the ball around.Something around the 400/4 range sounds about right, and that's nothing I'd want on my fantasy team. If you want a sneaky play, throw out a late round flier on him and start him in week 1, enjoy a TD, then try to trade him for something of value.

Now, for the long haul, when Gruden shifts his offense over the next year or two to be completely run-oriented, Smith should start putting up some great numbers. Until then, you'll only see a set few plays utilizing him, and it likely will be sporadic at best.

If Clayton is expected to return to rookie form, and Galloway puts in another 70 catch 1,000 yard season like Flynn expects, then Simms needs a serious bump in rankings.

What are FBG projections for Simms?

Hi MLB,With Simms and Clayton hopefully getting better and better, why do you think Gruden would shift to an offense that is "completely run oriented"?

He's wrong about Galloway

The highest paid FB in the league is going to be there for moral support

Considering they paid him $52,000 for every time he touched the ball last year, and that was with Cadillac injured for the better part of six games, I am not sure why this is such a surprise to you. He's on the team because of his veteran leadership, and even Alstott himself conceded after the season that he was planning on retiring, but decided to come back because he hadn't thought he would have such an "active" role as 2005. By active he meant career low (save for 2003 which he got hurt in week 4).

The idea is to build a system with a burner at TE, a burner at WR3, and two big WRs that can block as well as they catch. I definitely see Clayton emerging, but this is going to be an offense hoping to feature the run more than the pass. For Clayton, I'd think Hines Ward numbers.

Hey FBG's, Thanks for yet another excellent interview feature. This is why I have no problem justifying my subscription every year (yes, I know the MB is free). I bet David and Joe hate hearing this, seeing as organizing an interview is likely 10 x's easier than all the other content they round up. But seriously fellas, I can't get enough of these insider takes.

Couple of years ago you guys had a conversation with John Clayton after his tour of training camps. That commentary was fantasy gold for me that season. I know Clayton hasn't been hitting as well as he used to, but are there any plans to catch up with him late in the preseason again?

Thanks fellas

Curious if anyone is thinking like me.......how big can Clayton's numbers go if Galloway goes down??My guess that over last 8 weeks of the season (when Galloway is hurt again)Clayton averages:

7 catches / 85 yards / 0.6 TDs

If Galloway goes down, there's still Smith/Boston/Stovall/Hilliard, which is a lot better than Smith/Hilliard/Shepherd which they had last year. In addition Williams will be eating into the passing game, and Pittman still figures to see some his way. Gruden wants to spread the ball around more this year, so I'm not too confident in Clayton or Galloway dominating again, even if one goes down.I get what you're saying though. A healthy Clayton without Galloway will put up better numbers than a healthy Galloway without Clayton.
