iPhone Transfer (1 Viewer)

My boss gave me an old iPhone 6+ for my daughter. She is already on a plan, but does not have that phone any longer. The iPhone was paid for with cash a couple years ago, so a contract shouldn’t be an issue to get the phone released. What do I need to know about getting the phone transferred to my daughter’s plan?

On a side note, he deleted all of his pictures and such, but he doesn’t know how to get his account off the phone’s icloud. What’s the process to do that?

He’s going to need to remember the password to that iCloud account and just sign out of it from the phone. Hopefully he still has access to that account. The other way to do it is to sign into iCloud on a computer browser and you can remove a device from there.

otherwise, he’s looking at having to prove ownership at the Apple Store somehow to have them remove the activation lock.

Then, regardless of whether he erased his pictures or not, you should do a full Erase all contents and Settings on the phone. If you do it via syncing to a pc with iTunes you can also update tot he latest iOS at the same time.

Think you might also have to check what carrier he had when his phone was active to make sure you can activate it on your carrier.

isn't this as simple as a new SIM card in the phone?
I'll find out, but it seems for others that were gifted a used phone, the process has never been smooth.
I agree with Rustoleum and you sign out of everything; that will make sure everything is synced with it's cloud. Do a solid backup for safety's sake, then you wipe it clean, get a new SIM card, and all should be fine.

That's what I have done with iphones that I gave to my kids (but we've staid with same provider). The only issue could be if you are moving from one network to another, then there may be a lock that you may need to talk to the provider to release it.

At best, it will be a different account. I don't know if the provider is the same or not. The original owner paid for the phone in cash and in full, so I would hope there isn't a lock.

i got a 5 from keerok.  took it to att, upgraded from my 4s, new sim and i used my 4s to set it up as new.  same phone number.

I was aiming more toward if somethign was AT&T vs Verizon vs Sprint or something like that. Sometimes moving phones between providers can cause issues.

Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings

iClound will be gone.  Go through the setup procedures to add her info to the phone.  You'll need to call the carrier to activate.  Will require IMEI number which can be found in Settings > General > About

No, I don’t believe it will. As soon as you go to “set up”the newly erased phone, you are going to get the activation lock message that the “ e-mail account r##########.com “ is signed into iCloud, please enter the password and you will not me able to go any further.

It is intended to make it harder to just steal and wipe a phone and started somewhere around iOS 7 or 8 I think.

Better to get the owner to delete iCloud from the phone or remove the device from his in iCloud on the web.

It worked, but I did have his password. So it is erased, but I will need a SIM card. The current card is Verison and my daughter has T-Mobile.

Doesn't she have the SIM from her T-Mobile device?

ETA---went thru this before when my wife was handing down hers to my son...until she couldn't remember her itunes PW and it locked on failed attempts.  Picking it up again after seeing this thread so thanks for that.
