Most of us who were fortunate to land the number 1 pick may not even blink and take Peterson at number 1. But are there better options in PPR leagues?
As good as Peterson was last year, it is no secret that he's not the best receiver out there among the RB's. Last season he had only 21 receptions for 125 yards, and his rookie year he caught 19 balls. I haven't heard much about the Vikings looking to expand his role in the passing game, and even if they do sign Favre, I would doubt that we're looking at a significant increase in ADP's receiving totals. Additionally, while Peterson's running totals were great, at 363 carries for 1760 yards, I doubt that there's much room for him to improve on those numbers, except for a perhaps an increase in his TD totals (10 last season, 13 his rookie year).
Would it be crazy to look at Maurine Jones-Drew in PPR leagues?
If you look at the footballguys redraft-ppr rankings, MJD is actually ranked ahead of ADP. I wonder though how many of those that ranked MJD ahead of ADP would actually have the balls to draft him higher (I'm looking at Bob Henry, Clayton Gray, Jeff Pasquino) in a PPR. David Dodds' projections, when taking PPR into consideration, has MJD scoring about 25 points more than Peterson over the course of the season.
On top of that, if you consider Peterson's injury history (though he has admittedly been relatively healthy as a pro, missing only 2 games his first year and none last season), and the well known fact that RB's with 350+ carries tend to underwhelm the following year, it would seem to me that MJD may be the safer choice at the number 1 pick.
Is there anyone else you might consider at number 1 besides Peterson?
