Is anyone else targeting non-RBs early (1 Viewer)

Maybe I'm crazy and these guys really all blow, but I'm looking at the RBs available in rounds 5-9, and there is incredible value:

Player ADP

Peterson 5.02

Norwood 5.08

Jamal Lewis 5.09

MBIII 5.12

Tatum Bell 6.01

Julius Jones 6.06

Lamont Jordan 6.12

Brandon Jackson 7.04

Fred Taylor 7.06

Warrick Dunn 9.03

Foster 9.04

Droughns 10.09

There are others in these rounds that I left out. I'm targeting 2 or 3 of Norwood, Bell, JJ, F Taylor, C Taylor, Foster, Dunn as serviceable RBs that I can start, and won't expect spectacular production, but should be nice for 6-10 points when I need them.

This frees up my earlier picks (I pick 9th out of 12, and we use 3RR) for something like:

1.09 Henry

2.04 Steve Smith/CJ

3.04 Gates/TO/Fitz

4.04 Bulger/Brees/McNabb

Normally I'm terrified of waiting around this long on an RB2 and almost always open up with Stud RB theory, but I think this is the year to be ahead of the curve and recognize that you can gobble up talent at the other positions early and wait on RB value later.

Thoughts?

In leagues that score 6 pts for QB touchdowns, Peyton Manning can warrant a first round pick.

There have been many years, when RBs were not quite as deep as they are this year, that I have drafted late first/early second round and went WR/WR, with much success, including a few championships. This is not one of the years that I would try that. The WR depth is a bit too questionable, while RBs are deeper than they have been in quite a while.

Drafting anywhere up to 10th this year in a 12-player league, I would still likely select a RB. Beyond 10th, I'm not so sure.

I am. As a disclaimor: My league is a one-keeper league so Henry, Maroney, Jones-Drew and Benson will be kept. So that does influence my approach at the 11th spot. Rather than reach for a Ronnie Brown (who I'm really skittish about) in the second round I'm going to go with a stud WR and then look for a RB such as Deuce, Lynch, Jones or maybe Peterson (a reach admittedly) in the third. I do think the depth at RB - even in my league with some off the board as keepers - makes this a very good year to target a top WR in the second. I'm not sure there is a lot of difference between someone like Brown or Edge in the second round and guys like Deuce, Lynch, Jones or maybe Cadillac in the third.

I'm in a 10-teamer, and going RB/WR from the 7 spot. We also start 3 WR.

The VBD for the top 5 WRs is equal to the 8-12 RBs for me, and I love the flexibility it gives me in rounds 3-6. If a good RB falls (Portis), I can take him. If another WR falls (Wayne), I can take him.

If a good back falls to the 4th (RBrown, Benson), I can take them there.

Etc...etc...etc.

10-teamer performance league.

I generally go with how the draft is going. I'm picking 5th and I'm likely to go back unless I decide to gamble on Manning. So, I do have one option there.

But in the second round if I see the backs all dissapearing and the best receiver on the board there I'll take a receiver. If I see Gates in round 3, I'll take him there (have to start a TE), etc. I generall find that if I don't go with the runs I can get the best value and I may actually start the runs.

Always be flexible. Have your targets but don't overreach. It's all about Value.

Benson is going to be kept in a one keeper league??? I'm in a 2 keeper league and I think he will be available along with say Thomas Jones. Only WR being kept is Smith. I have the #1 pick and the #6 pick. I'm really torn on RB/WR or WR/WR or WR/RB. the 4 picks in between are all keeping 2 rbs. We can start 3 rbs. If Benson is there, I will have a hard time not taking him with 1 then say Harrison/Owens/Housh/Wayne at #6. The gamble would be to take CJ #1 and hope nobody grabs Benson 2-5.Thoughts?

Yea. Only players who weren't drafted in the first three rounds of the previous year's draft can be kept. You get to keep them for one year and each team keeps one player. Sorry I wasn't clearer about that.

ahhhh. yes, that would be important info.

Drafted #5 in a local ten teamer. 2 RB, 2 WRs and 1 flex (RB/WR)

Went RB first round, then went WR the next 3 rounds garnering S. Smith, Terrell Owens and Colston. Then in the 5th and 6th I went McAllister and A. Peterson respectively. I think it worked out quite well.

Very nice. I agree. :excited:

Who did you get at 1.05?

In leagues where the #1 DEF outscored the #12 DEF by 100 points or more I am grabbing CHI DEF in round 6 or 7 whenever I can. Would never normally do this but they are about as "sure" as you can get for an elite DEF. And the point difference makes it a no brainer in these leagues. They score like a 3rd RB most games.

i would not want any on your list as my rb2. i might wait a little longer than usual for rb3 based on that depth, though.
I generally agree, but I'm toying with the idea of trying something in my 12 team PPR. That crop is, hopefully, going to allow me to get 3WRs, 1 QB and 2 RBs(in whatever order) before I have to burn a pick on RB3.

yeah I'm warming up to spending a little more on a D this year if I can get BAL or CHI. If not, it's the $1 discount bin for me.

I have always been a RB-RB guy, but this year I'm going Manning at #7, RB in the 2nd, and then probably Gates in the 3rd...since RB value seems to be available late. I figure I'll have the best QB, solid RB and best TE. WR I will struggle but might find a gem.

i just finished my draft going QB-WR-WR if anybody wants the results i wouldn't mind posting them..

not quite sure how i feel about the team yet.

I would like some more info here, as I am toying with the same idea (picking 8 in a 12, non ppr, 6 for all tds.)

Same here...I'm going to assume Manning/Smith/Wayne, but would like to know how you caught up on the RB's
