Is Chad Pennington going to be a starting QB in 2010? (1 Viewer)

Looking at the FAs available, Pennington appears to be the best UFA out there, right? Things are really ugly at QB in the NFL, eh?

Kyle Orton, Jason Campbell and Matt Moore are all RFAs, but they're all starting Qbs, anyway (i.e., if someone else signed them, their teams would need a new QB).

Who else is out there? Kellen Clemens? Charlie Batch? Kyle Boller? Brodie Croyle? David Carr? Daunte Culpeper? Troy Smith?

I suppose Bradford and Claussen might be day 1 starters, and maybe Vick and Kolb (or McNabb) will both be, too. Am I missing anyone else? Maybe Tyler Thigpen? Going down the list, the following 22 teams appear set at QB (at least with respect to their plan, not necessarily discussing how good the guy is) entering 2010:

NYJ

NE

MIA

PIT

CIN

BAL

IND

HOU

TEN

SDG

KAN

DEN

NYG

PHI

DAL

MIN

GB

DET

CHI

NOR

TAM

ATL

That leaves ten other teams. Jacksonville will probably stick with Garrard and/or draft Tebow. I think Del Rio has had enough of Garrard, but doesn't have many (any?) alternatives.

The whole NFC West, IMO, is up in flux. What's SF going to do? Smith looks to be the guy, but I don't know how the team can have much faith in him. Is that a team that's better with Pennington? Obviously depends on how Pennington's arm looks. Arizona probably hitches their wagon to Leinart, but I wouldn't be surprised if they want to bring in a veteran guy (and like I said, Pennington appears to be the only veteran guy out there) to compete with him in camp, and then watch as that guy beats out Leinart. In Seattle, Carroll has no ties to Hasselbeck, and at this point he looks totally washed up. Seneca Wallace isn't the answer, either. St. Louis? Vick seems like a good fit there, and obviously if Bulger is officially out, there's an opening. Possibly for Claussen.

Carolina probably hitches their wagon to Moore, although I think they need to bring someone in to compete with him. He played well last year, no doubt, but he's an undrafted QB who has thrown only 250 passes since entering the league. It's tough to get a read on his true ability.

In Washington, Campbell is probably retained, but it could also be a landing spot for Bradford or Claussen. If Washington keeps Campbell and drafts a QB, that thins the QB market even more.

Oakland probably won't want a guy like Pennington, but is Gradkowski the answer? Doubtfully. JR probably sticks around, too.

Cleveland gets round 3 of Anderson vs. Quinn? Does Mangini sign Pennington? Is Kolb the guy? People rip on Russell, but is Quinn any better? Same draft, both have career averages of just 4.8 net yards per pass attempt. Quinn averaged an anemic 9.8 yards per completion last year. He's been in the league for three seasons and shown absolutely nothing. Anderson looks to be just as bad albeit in a totally different way (who completes 44.5% of their passes in 2009?)

This is one of the worst FA QB markets I can remember. Where do you see everyone ending up? Does Pennington sign and start somewhere?

How can any team count on Pennington for a full season?

Chad is a good QB but injuries have destroyed him arm.

Chad has lead his team to the playoffs in every season he's remained healthy. He's a much better QB than fantasy football players give him credit for being.Obviously injuries have hampered his career big time and his track record indicates that you better be prepared to have you backup play, but his arm strength (or lack thereof) has always been exagerated. He throws a very good deep ball and is smart enough to not let CB jump his routes on sideline throws by putting the ball where only the WR could get it (well there was one season where for some reason he wasn't making the right adjustments and got burned alot).I think Arizona would be very wise to at least bring him in to backup Leinart. If Leinart craps the bed after about 4 or 5 weeks, Pennington could come in and likely still lead the Cardinals to the playoffs in the weak NFC West.

I wouldn't write off Hasslebeck. Expect him to be the starter while a rookie QB is groomed. His issue has been injuries, bad OL, and bad supporting cast. His skills have diminished, but I don't think he's washed up. He'll be a caretaker.

Pennington's not a fit because Seahawks would want the long-term answer. Pennington is not that.

David Carr was absolutely brutal in Houston and Carolina, but I could see him resurrecting his career and becoming a Kerry Collins/Vinny Testaverde/Jon Kitna for someone. He looked decent in spot duty for the Giants last year. More confident and relaxed than we've seen him in the past. If were rebuilding bad a team like the Raiders or Browns I would sign him and give him a chance to win the job. You've got nothing to lose.

I still feel like Trent Edwards could become a decent starter someday. He showed a lot of promise immediately in his career, but he regressed this past season and his TD/INT ratio has never improved. I think he needs a change of scenery. Buffalo is where talent goes to die. If the Bills are totally over Edwards (which doesn't appear to be the case), they might be willing to move him for a 4th round pick or worse. I would take that chance if I were running an NFL team.

Good starting NFL QBs don't grow on trees. If you want one, you either have to take a shot on a high upside backup via trade (Favre, Schaub, Hasselbeck) or draft one, usually with a premium pick (Manning, McNabb, Roeth, Rivers, etc).

I like Bulger as Leinart backup if he goes. He is a good QB and that team fits his skills IMO. Perfect compliment in the end.

Pennington could go to any of these teams. I like Cleveland in the end for him. Even though they need a strong armed guy for the weather. But they will bring in a soothing guy for now

I also like Trent Edwards still and dont count him out. If not with Buffalo, I can see him going somewhere else. Seattle would be a good choice IMO.

SL probably wastes time with Vick in the end. Kill all fantasy value there and they get another top 3 pick next year for QB unless they waste a pick on Bradford/Clausen. Take Suh and wait till next year.

..and reap the benefits of a rookie salary cap in 2011 when they pick a QB.
