I'm going "no," tough the answer is more convoluted than I thought. Lot of people I respect on the board saying "yes."

Beach Boys are certainly better than GNR. It's not even close.

Pearl Jam (if for no other reason than @Tremendous Upside so no arguing on this one otherwise maybe they go below)

The Doors (although I can't stand them)

The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Bruce and the E Street Band

Crosby Still Nash (& Young)

Beastie Boys

Beach Boys

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers 

Prince and the Revolution

(if we want individuals not fully associated with a band add Elvis, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Billy Joel, Ray Charles and if we take the title literally not to cover just rock, a couple dozen jazz, big band, country acts and other 'bands' to throw in)

Probably mossing a few and any number could be argued in the second group as this is just at first blush.

The jackson 5 and NWA would also definitely be better than G&R.

 
Absolutely. 

Theyre Mike Tyson. Not a lot of longevity, but lightning in a bottle for a short while and disrupted and dominated like nobody else. 

 
Took way too long before Elvis, Springsteen and the Grateful Dead were mentioned.  And I'm not even much of a fan of 2 of those 3.

Oh, and he'll no to the OP.

The performers, which ever band they played with... Wynton, Satchmo, Monk, Dizzy

Oh, I didn't even mention the super group Blind Faith... ONE album and they were both better and more a historical influence than GnR.

 
At this point, if we are talking 'band' - not heavy rock, not rock, not rock/popular music - they are an honorable mention, at best.

I would, too, but even calling Purple Rain a group effort is sketchy.  Yeah, it is created to Prince and the Revolution, but When Doves Cry, for example, was not a group effort; everything we hear in that song was played or sang by Prince.

The Beach Boys are considered pop music put to chamber music put to classical. If you're arguing with someone who isn't a fan, you're wasting your time. 

I'd also argue that Weezer put out two or three better albums than GNR, too.

Big fan of the Weezer Blue Album and not really a hair metal fan but Appetite for Destruction is epic.

 
How I missed (era: yes I'm an idiot)Funkadelic/Parliament (when you are the sample for half of an entire genre) I don't know. far more influential than GnR.

and FWIW I think GnR rocks.  And it's two great albums IMO and Use Your Illusion was pretty damn good.

Still not close to top ten and at this point I have them out of the top twenty.
