I'm 34 and think the Brian Wilson is one of the handful most talented American musical artists of the century. He's up there with Miles, Coltrane, Gershwin, Bernstein, Dylan, Copland, Duke, Berry and Aretha.
Aretha sucks. But I wouldn't argue with the rest.

Am I a racist if I say i like the song? Sounds great. It was different times and we all know Axl's an idiot. He thought he was being edgy.
It's gross.  Even back then it was gross. The music industry is lodaed with all walks of life; they insulted all of them in vulgar fashion.  But like what you like, Nip.

I'm sorry, I'm no music buff, and don't catch schtick these days, but the Beach Boys being good thing is a joke, right?

If not, could somebody point me towards a good Beach Boys song?
Not a joke.  Pet Sounds is one of the greatest albums of all time.  If you're not a music buff, you probably won't hear the things that make it great and that's ok but basically they were innovators in the studio in their production and how they layered different musical ideas and their song writing was TOP NOTCH.

Plus, they covered Sloop John B.  Who doesn't love Sloop John B?

GnR had 1 great album. Koufax was a 7x all star and 3 time Cy Young. 2x WS MVP. 3x triple crown winner. 1x MVP. He's like The Beach Boys of pitchers, not GnR. GnR is Bo Jackson. It was fun but it didn't last long and when you actually look at it, it was more hype than production.
Bo had more longevity, more like the Mark Fidrych.

In terms of rock bands, Everyone copied the Beatles until Led Zeppelin came along and then everyone copied Zep, then Van Halen came along and everyone copied them, then Guns and Roses came along and everyone copied them, then Nirvana came along and everyone copied them.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.  There's ONLY 5 rock bands that caused effectively the entire rock industry to alter what they do to mimic them.  GnR is one of those 5.  They are a top FIVE rock band.

Sure, whatever.

What you think on this will depend heavily on your age. If you grew up in the 60s or 70s....your answer will most likely be no. You had great memories with other bands.

The Stooges laughs at this idiocy. And they do it with their lead singer rubbing peanut butter all over his naked chest.

Meh.  Appetite was awesome. We all know that.  UYI1 and UY2 have enough songs to make 1 great album and 1 very good album.  GNR Lies was very good.  Spaghetti Incdient?.....meh.

Is there someone between Koufax and Jackson that we can agree on?

I assume this is schtick?  I'd love to see who you can point to as specifically GnR copies is the small window between AfD and Nevermind,.  While AfD was released in '87, it didn't chart until '99, while Nevermind was an almost instant success in '91.  That's a pretty short window for GnR to have revolutionized the music scene.

All that said, GnR is easily a top 10 US rock band for me, but I will totally understand those who disagree.  Appetite came out while I was just entering high school.  It is probably my second most listened to album of all time.

If we are going to look at one hard rock/metal band that hit the scene in the 80s that influenced "everybody," the answer to that would be Metallica, not GNR.

Exact dates:

Appetite for Destruction debuted at number 182 on the Billboard 200 in the week of August 29, 1987. It did not top the chart until August 6, 1988, after the band had toured and received radio and music video airplay with singles such as "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Paradise City".

Nevermind is the second studio album by American rock band Nirvana, released on September 24, 1991 by DGC Records. Produced by Butch VigNevermind was the band's first release on DGC. It was also their first album to feature drummer Dave Grohl.

Despite low commercial expectations by the band and its record labelNevermind became a surprise success in late 1991, largely due to the popularity of its first single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit". By January 1992, it had replaced Michael Jackson's album Dangerous at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart.

so Nevermind wasn't really an instant success.

I will agree that GnR really didn't spawn a movement. Don't remember too many followers. To me the were a culmination of what VH, Crue, Aerosmith, etc did. They were the end game.

Nirvana changed the music world.

GnR window for emulation WAS fairly short.  But it absolutely did happen.  Van Halen was being copied for a very long time until AfD, but it clearly did stop with AfD.  GnR are 1 of ONLY 5 bands to achieve this level of success - to be THE rock band that effectively all others copied.

Who copied them?

I'm not sure how much this disputes what my point was, other than the relative term of "instant success" for Nevermind.  While GnR's album sat on the shelf for an entire year before charting, Smells like Teen Spirit was getting massive airplay on MTV within a couple of months.  Is that the same kind of "Instant success" Michael Jackson's "Bad" had upon its release?  No, of course not, but for a band that had zero exposure before the release of the video, I'd say instant success fits here.  I don't know your age of if you were an MTV watcher at this time, but I was, and I definitely remember a sharp shift as soon as it was released.

Not really part of the debate but this is a true statement.  Metallica is the greatest American hard rock band as well.  They had hits. They influenced a ton of bands.  They have been around for a really long time.  They are great live.

Come one guys, we aren't taking the pseudo intellectual wankery of Nirvana seriously are?  9th grade lyrics about the pain of life?  Please.  Killed music.

Doesn't anyone like to get F'ed up and laid anymore, maybe a fight once in a while?  Of course G N'R  is a top 5 US band.  Maybe if they didn't live their gimmick so much they would have cemented their legacy and saved rock but they went off on their own wank fest with Axl writing ballads and swimming with dolphins.

All these bastards created the petri dish for the audio turd of pop country to rise.

Picture Axl putting on his Aqua Net and now tell me top 5.

Something like this.  And we are down grading bands for their offensive lyrics??  N.W.A. isn't a great band because their lyrics are uniformly misogynistic?  I think we can go on and on with examples of offensive lyrics by "great" bands.  Remember the greater portion of pop music is useless dreck, I mean have you listened to the early Beatles?  I wanna hold your hand?  Have you listened to the late Beatles?  Fantastic dreck.  If you want deep insights read some philosophy, want to listen to a good tune try some pop music.

GnR was like a new star that went straight into supernova. The spectacular light didn't last long enough, but few bands burned more brightly during their peak. Top 10 for sure.

who has any problem with misogyny?  This is pop music, I damn well miss it.  The Nirvana kids were too busy crying into their second hand store sweaters to get laid, that was half the problem.  God bless them, they sold punk music to the nation with some power chords because Kurt looked like a pretty girl.  They kept Krist in the back marla hooch style

My initial reaction to this question was that it must be some sort of joke.

But then I looked at the poll results and am shuked how wrong the FFA can sometimes get things.

I think general malaise was asking for explanation of "one in a million".  Just pointing out lots and lots of offensive stuff in "great" bands catalogs.

I would say LMFAO, but that doesn't generate the emoticon...

Looking at that list made me realize how much Guns N Roses is not a top 10 band.

I give them credit for being less cheesy than the rest of the genre they came from. Same as Def Leppard.

I also give credit to The Amazing Race for being a less cheesy reality show. Doesn't mean it's a top 10 TV show off all time.

Also, ask a room full of people that are not white Generation X dudes (the entire FBG community) this question, and the answer will be NO.

Precisely. Half the 'yes' votes are due to the nostalgia of AfD coming out during your HS/College years.

I overrate Green Day because Dookie was my favorite album during my teen years.
