Is it time to consider firing Sean Peyton? (1 Viewer)

Do you want them to fire every coach when they go under .500 during a season? It doesn't work that way.
Interesting post. I think coaches do get judged beyond wins and losses. Saints fans, during Haslet's tenure, asked "Is this the best you can do? Are we ever going to take it one step beyond?" and Haslet could assuage their fears. He wasn't going to change, especially with his commitment to Aaron Brooks established. Saints fans now look at Payton much the same way. Many feel that we're not a better team this year than we were last year, despite the additions and maturation process. The concern is that the players are not going to get better. The concern is that Payton's not going to get better as a coach. Fans want to see improvement on the field, even if the record doesn't reflect that. Ultimately, the question from fans for the franchise is "Is this best you can do?". For me, personally, I feel he's an improving coach. However, he has struggled with playcalling. It may be time for him to hire a real OC, in addition to a different DC.

I also think Deuce was huge, as was finding out that Bush isn't an adequate interior pounder to make up that loss. Should they fire Petrino because he built his offense with Vick as a huge component, but then lost him? I think Deuce alone is worth the difference in a couple of games this year, and that's about what the Saints can hope to be with this talent - a 7-5 team. The fact that they snuck up on a couple of teams and took out a couple others with tremendous emotion last year doesn't make them the Colts under mis-management.

Great point. That's why the "look at what Payton did last season" argument does not hold water. And, judging from Payton's performance THIS year, it's looking more and more like the Saints should to look elsewhere for a quality coach. A good start would be one who won't call a double-reverse at the 50 with the lead and under four minutes to play.
I defy you to name a coach who hasn't made a bad call.

One of my criticisms of Sean Payton was that he refused to use Pierre Thomas when Duece went down despite evidence Thomas is substantially better running back than either Reggie Bust or Aaron Stecker.

Well, Payton finally HAD to use him and look what happens -- Pierre goes off for over 200 total yards and and a TD.

Imagine that.

Other Saints fans may want to see more, but I've seen enough.

Payton needs to go.

I thought Pierre Thomas was hurt for a while? Plus, Stecker knew the offense a lot better, was better in blitz pickup, and didn't exactly stink it up with his opportunities. That said, Thomas looked spectacular against a revved-up and prideful Chicago defense. Until this past game, I was convinced the Saints had to draft Deuce's heir apparent on the first day of the 2008 Draft. Now it looks like Thomas might fit that bill.

ETA: Thomas was hurt -- he suffered a bruised kidney on a kick return at Carolina.

I know, the Saints shoulda never let the guy who brought Thomas in out the door. Oh wait, that was Sean Payton.
