Is Matt Jones Officially a Bust? (1 Viewer)

I didn't get a chance to see him play on Sunday, and I know he's technically only the 3rd receiver option on his team, but I'm curious what people think. Gerrrard and Jones connected last year, but I'm hoping some homers have a better idea.

Matt doesn't even act like he likes football. A guy on another board that has proven to have inside information concerning Jones before, claims he played high school ball with Matt and knows him well. When there was talk of possibly cutting Matt in preseason, he said that Matt told him that if the Jags cut him, he'd just move back to Arkansas, invest his money and hunt and fish all the time. That he wouldn't even try it with another team. Kid has all the talent in the world, it just seems he doesn't care much for the game.

It is way too early to make these claims. This is the first game and in case you didn't notice, the guys that were out there didn't do such a great job and the team lost. Think there might be some changes? He can't get the ball if he doesn't get looks. When he has had the chance to play he has done as well or better than any of the players they have.

That's just my opinion and I can't claim to know someone who played HS football with him. But one thing I have learned is not to overreact over the first week just as I told some of you not to read too much into preseason. If you went nuts over Charles Sharon or Mike Walker then this is another lesson...

This is what you get when you try to replace real production with combine test production....it was only yesterday when Chris Mortensen was all over the ESPN site telling us how this guy was going to be a freak and revolutionize the NFL

Yeah Chris.....where is your retraction now?

:)

I think the Jags was one of the worst spots he could have landed. Look at what has transpired there the last couple of seasons and tell me how any WR let alone a guy learning the position could have had any success there. M. Jones very well could be a bust, but landing with the Jags did not help him out at all.

This appears obvious watching him play.Good WR's command the ball and they attack the ball.Matt Jones doesn't do these things.I had been mesmerized by his college film, and "the catch" from Senior Bowl practice. So it took me a while to figure out that he is a blue-chip athlete, but a penny-stock receiver.Thankfully I called it quits on him sometime last season.

Maybe he should have helped make his Qbs better.....considering he was a once in a generation player (Chris's words, not mine), I am amazed that he could not do that.

Me too...traded him in a dynasty league for Tatum Bell....am thrilled with that move.

He continues to regress. He lost his starting job this summer and for awhile he was in jeopardy of being cut. He's behind Northcutt & Wilford. The under acheiving Reggie Williams has looked better than Matt as of late and probably has more talent at the WR position. Youngsters M.Walker & John Broussard are as good an option at this point. I see Jones' ceiling as WR2/3 on a mediocore passing team, more realistically he''ll be a WR3 on a bad team or a WR4 on a decent passing team. Basically not startable for the entirety of his career.ETS: I bought into the hype following his 2005 rookie season. I traded Reggie Brown for him prior to 2006. Not that Reggie is eaxactly tearing it up but Jones did not meet my expectations last year and totally disappointed me this summer. His trade value is almost zero, so if you own him you're stuck at this point. If by some miracle he had a game of 5/90 7 2 TD's off the bench, trade him as fast as you can.

What if you went nuts over Broussard in preseason is that another lesson?Matt Jones has loads of talent but he's in a WR graveyard of an NFL team, has had numerous nagging injuries and shown little love for the game. Does that mean cut him after week 1? Of course not, if you had a reason to have him on your roster in the first place one week should not change that. But talent + opportunity = fantasy production. Maybe commitment needs to be added that formula in Matt's case. Because he has the talent and since no one else in Jax is very impressive he should have the opportunity... We'll see.

I think Matt has great measurables, which many are confusing with "Raw talent. "He has a fast 40 time and a nice vertical etc., but he's not a natural talent at WR. His hands & concentration are not very good. You can not blame his lack of production on QB play, Jones has to be accountable for his lack of stats.

Jones had a solid finish to last season even putting up a couple 100 yd games. I would like to see what he could do on a better passing team than jacksonville.

If Matt Jones played in NE or INDY he'd be a stud
No. He wouldn't. He lacks the desire. You can see it in his play. He's a homeless man's Randy Moss( on every play ) when Randy knows the ball is not coming his way, Randy is on a bad losing team and they are down by 20.

Jack Del Rio is another of Matt's problems. The guy is a defensive coordinator...he has no clue about offense.

Garrard is terrible, the WR's are terrible or uninspired, the defense appears to be over-rated.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here...J-ville will end up with a record similar to KC!

Jacksonville is a WR graveyard because the WRs they've drafted stink. Jimmy Smith produced to the very end with Lefty and Garrard and under Del Rio. I've been watching NFL football for a long time now and I've never seen a player as afraid of being hit as Matt Jones is. If the Jags could combine Reggie Williams' heart and desire with Matt Jones' talent they would have a great receiver, but as it is they have two first-round busts.

If I were Jax, I would move him into a TE/H-back role. He's got good straight line speed, but he's a long strider and can't get any seperation on DBs. If you could get him matched up on LBs he would fare better. Lining him up in the backfield would also open up some new ways to get him the ball in space.

It's not exactly like their starting WRs did anything. Do people really think Northcutt and Wilford will start all year? I know I don't.

I think patience applies here.

I think Jones may be a bust. But I really feel the way this off season has been handled by Jack and the Jacksonville FO (Leftwich, WRs not going to make the team, etc) I think they may be the real culprits. Someone mentioned that JT Smith did just fine before he retired. The part that was left out, is he learned how to the play the position under a different coaching regime.

We talk about all the WR busts they have, but I am thinking the coaching may very well be the real problem. And with a player like Jones which never played WR before means he will never attain a level of competency. I also think the implication that he an Williams were going to get cut if they did not get their "act" together soured both of them with the whole Jacksonville situation and may be the root of the apparent lack of desire we are seeing on the field.

Im thinking of picking up Northcutt as a sleeper WR for bye fillins. Northcutt had like 9 targets this weekend....and he had a lot more during the preseason. Im liking him more and more.

He shows flashes, but I don't think he's very good. He didn't have a good training camp and didn't show any signs of improvement. He has decent deep speed and can make the circus catch, but he seems pretty limited otherwise. I sold him in the early offseason when his name still had a lot of value.

Is he completely hopeless? No, but he's very low in my dynasty rankings.

In order to "bust" you have to have high expectations that aren't met. He busted a couple years ago. Last year and so far this year, he's doing exactly what we should expect.
